NHL Power Plays 2/28/18
It’s a short five-game slate on Wednesday night but there are a lot of bad teams which means a lot of good spots. Let’s dig right in.
Mathew Barzal – NYI at MTL
DraftKings – $6,100
FanDuel – $6,600
It is patently absurd how much offence the Islanders second line, centered by Barzal, generates. At time of writing, that trio is on the ice for over 73 shot attempts for per 60 minutes at five-n-five. For a reference, the McDavid-Draisaitl-Maroon combination from Edmonton is on the ice for 72.4, the Marchand-Bergeron-Pastrnak trio for 67.1. Whether matchups factor in here – John Tavares would draw most of the opposing top lines – is irrelevant. It’s what happens in the minutes given, and what happens is a lot of rubber flying at the opposing goalie.
Speaking of matchups, don’t worry about them too much here; it’s only been one game since the trade deadline. We don’t have a lot from which to glean information.
As far as the penalty kill is concerned, the Canadiens aren’t horrific, but they’re bordering near the bottom-third of the league since the start of January. If the Islanders get their power plays, they should be able to generate the chances needed for Barzal to grab a power-play point.
Barzal is on the road but on a short slate at a relatively low price – he’s outside the top-5 centres by cost – he’s fine to target in any type of contest. I would be more comfortable using him in tournaments than cash games, though.
