NHL Power Plays 1/2/18

We’re kicking the New Year off with a monster slate, that has some great tournaments on all the sites.  We have a twelve-game slate with a massive amount of options, and I’m here to help make that decision process a little bit easier.  Every team is pretty well rested due to the holiday break, which means it could be one crazy night.  Hold on for the ride, and let’s see if we can find you a couple power plays to take down a big one tonight.  Keep an eye on news and line changes as this article is usually written a little early because of editing and other stuff.  If there are changes, I will update them in our Premium Slack Chat.  Good luck tonight #FamVice.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information.  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS  for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity.  The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also naturalstattrick.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on our premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

*Three games in four nights

**Four games in six nights

Tyler Seguin – DAL vs CLS

Seguin could get overlooked tonight as they take on the Jackets, but Columbus has struggled defensively lately, and their goaltending hasn’t been as good as usual.  Seguin is averaging over four shots on net per game over the last ten, and he has six points in his last five.   Over the last month, Columbus is allowing the second most scoring chances 5 on 5, giving up 34.9 SCA/60.  The Jackets are also giving up the second most high danger scoring chances (13.96 HDCA/60).  The other big thing of the Jackets is that they have taken a bunch of penalties since the start of December (6th most), and their penalty kill have been pretty awful at a 77.1% kill rate, which is ranked 24th.

Tyler Johnson – TB @ TOR

The bolts could be popular tonight, with one of the most potent offenses in the league this year.  Steven Stamkos has managed to stay healthy so far, and keeping his line one of the most dangerous lines in hockey.  On a massive slate like tonight, you don’t have to worry about ownership too much because the mere amount of choices dilute the ownership.    But, Tyler Johnson sets up nicely tonight as he should see the better matchups due to Nazem Kadri wearing himself out on the Stamkos line.  better yet, Johnson sees the top power play minutes and gets you exposure to the top line at a lower salary.  over the last month, Toronto is giving up just a hair under 34 shots on net per game, but they are also allowing the seventh highest corsi against at 63.72 CA/60.  Johnson will look to add onto his four-game point streak tonight and I think he’s got a god shot at it tonight.

David Krejci – BOS @ NYI

Krejci came out on fire after sitting for a couple weeks due to an “upper body” injury.  He should continue to get pucks to the net tonight against the Islanders, who have a ton of offensive firepower, but have lacked any defensive depth.  The Isle are giving up over 34 shots on net per game, and they are allowing the most goals in the league at 3.54 GA/A.  Boston’s top line of Patrice Bergeron Brad Marchand David Pasternak has been semi slumping, but they demand all the defensive attention of the isles.  The price of the Bruins top line could break your bank, but people will definitely try to get there.  I’m going to turn to the second line of Krejci and I will also have exposure to the third line.   By stacking Krejci with his line mates Ryan Spooner Jake Debrusk, its saves you some cap for other stacks, but they also play on the second power play together.  The two massive reasons to employ a bunch of Bruins is because they are giving up the most high danger chances in the league at 16.16 HDCA/60 and The Islanders penalty kill has been absolutely putrid with a 64.3% kill rate.

Other Centers in play

Blake Wheeler / Brayden Schenn / Ryan Getzlaf / Connor McDavid / Vincent Trocheck / Sidney Crosby / Auston Matthews / William Karlsson / Nathan MacKinnon / Sean Couturier / Eric Staal

VALUE – (4k and under)

Yanni Gourde /Alexander Kerfoot / Jason Spezza / Nick Bonino / Patrick Berglund

Rickard Rakell – ANH @ VAN

Rakell has been white hot playing alongside Ryan Getzlaf.  He has recording eight points in his last five games, with multi points in three of those games.  Rakell hasn’t been afraid to fire the puck either, as he has averaged 3.6 shots on net over the last eight games.  Rakell sets up nicely tonight against the Canucks, who have struggled to find an identity.  Vancouver usually drags the pace of their opponents down but, they are still giving up 3.2 goals against per game, and they are allowing 31.8 Shots against.  The Canucks penalty kill has gone downhill over the last month, as they now sport a 72.3% kill rate, giving me more reason to fire up a sniper like Rakell.

Vladimir Tarasenko – STL vs NJ

The Devils have been attackable this season as they are allowing over 33 shots on net per game so far.  The devils haven’t been a good possession team this year as they rank 28th in corsi against with a 60.97 CA/60.  The Devils also give up the seventh most scoring chances at 29.95 SCA/60.  Tarasenko will be without sniper Jaden Schwartz but he still has Brayden Schenn and he is averaging over a point per game at home.

Patrick Laine – WPG @ COL

Since Laine has moved up to the top line with Blake Wheeler and Klye Connor, he has seen a bump in minutes played and also a bunch of scoring chances.  This game should have great pace with tons of scoring chances, and I actually like both sides.  Colorado has played well lately, but with the firepower of the Jets top line, there should be plenty of opportunities.  Laine has three points in his last two games since moving up and I think he continues that streak tonight.  The matchup isnt the best but like I said I think both top lines here could be a shootout.

Other wingers in play

Nikita Kucherov / Jakub Vorachek / Jonathan Marchessault / Nikolaji Ehlers / Gabriel Landeskog

Ryan Spooner /Charley Coyle / Justin Williams / Andrew Cogliano / Alex Tuch / Travis Konecny

Erik Johnson COL vs WPG

Johnson has stepped up and filled the shoes of Tyson Barrie nicely.  Johnson has been logging huge minutes on the point for the Avs and he is quarterbacking the top power play unit.  Winnipeg is a middle of the road team in metrics but they take a ton of penalties.  Look for this game to be action packed and for Johnson to get some opportunities tonight. After all, he is coming off a multi-point effort.

Shayne Gostisbehere PHI vs PIT

The ghost is a good contrarian play tonight against the Pens.  Gostisbehere has a ton of offensive awareness and he quarterbacks the top powerplay for the Flyers.  Ghost has a two-game point streak, and he has been firing the puck consistently.  Gostisbehere is averaging four minutes of power play time per game and the Penguins have given up over three goals per game.

Other Defensemen in play

John Klingberg / Brent Burns / Victor Hedman / Alex Pietrangelo /Torey Krug / Morgan Reilly

Brandon Montour / Marc Edward-Vlasic / Nate Schmidt / Jake Gardiner / Esa Lindell

Ben Bishop
