NHL Power Plays 4/6/17

We got a 12 game slate tonight with a TON of implications.  For today’s article I will go over some of the implications and give a couple plays that I like tonight.  Make sure you keep an eye on the lineups right before lock, because teams that don’t have anything to play for will be resting players which means we could find some value plays at a nice price.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information.  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity.  Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!

The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also puckalytics.com.

With only three days left in the regular season, there are still a couple teams fighting for their playoff lives and jockeying for position.  Let’s take a look at the important games and scenarios :

Ottawa @ Boston – 7:00 PM

This is a huge game for these teams tonight.  Both of these teams are jockeying for position to stay away from playing the powerhouse Washington Capitols.  The Senators can clinch their playoff spot by earning a single point against the Bruins. However, if the Senators lose in regulation, the team can still clinch if the New York Islanders and Tampa Bay Lightning lose in any fashion. The Senators can move into sole possession of second place in the Atlantic Division with a win over the Bruins tonight, which they are 3-0 vs them this year… Hold onto your seats, this is a playoff game in the making.

Pittsburgh @ New Jersey – 7:00 PM

Winnipeg @ Columbus – 7:00 PM

The Penguins and Jackets are both in the playoffs, and will square off with each other in the first round, but they are fighting for home ice advantage for the rest of the season.

NY Islanders @ Carolina – 7:00 pm

The Islanders have no choice but to win out AND they need some help which looks unlikely.  The Isles need either the Senators or the Maple Leafs to lose out. Not a very attractive game playoff wise because the implications don’t seem to be in their favor.

Tampa Bay @ Toronto – 7:30 PM

Tampa Bay pretty much sealed their fate the other day with a loss to Boston.  They need a handful of thing to happen and it’s almost impossible.  They have to win out, have Toronto or Ottawa LOSE OUT, AND the Islanders to lose a game.  The Maple leafs have played one less game than the Bruins so if they win out then they would move ahead of the Bruins, leaving Boston to match up with the Caps.

Chicago @ Anaheim – 10:00 PM

Chicago has locked up the #1 seed in the West so they aren’t playing for anything.  The Ducks have a four point lead in the Pacific with two games left, if they beat the Hawks tonight AND the Oilers beat San Jose, it seals their fate to come out of the Pacific on top.

Calgary @ Los Angeles – 10:30 PM

Calgary and Nashville own the wild card spots in the Central right now with 92 points, and they would like to get the top wild card spot to stay away from the Blackhawks.  Calgary needs to win out and have the Predators to lose one to jump ahead of them taking the top wild card spot.

Edmonton @ San Jose – 10:30 PM

This looks to be a playoff preview as these teams will most likely end up playing each other in the 1st round of the playoffs, if the Ducks can take care of business tonight.

Sidney Crosby – PIT @ NJ – $8,400

Crosby leads the league with 43 goals and has a chance to get home ice against the Blue Jackets with a win tonight, and I guarantee he will be all over the place tonight.  Even with last change and matching up with the Taylor Hall line he has had success.  In the four games they have squared off this year, Crosby has five goals and three assists with 18 shots on net.  The devils are only playing a spoiler role and although they have played better at home, I just don’t see them keeping up with the firepower of the Penguins.  New Jersey has had a horrible time killing penalties in their own building this year with the second worst penalty kill in the league with a 74.8% kill rate at home.

Patrice Bergeron – BOS vs OTT – $6,900

Bergeron has taken the load of the Bruins and has spearheaded their recent hot run of 4-0 getting them into the playoffs.  Tonight is a HUGE game for the Bruins and Bergeron is coming in with beautiful form.  He has had at least five shots on goal in the past three games, and he might get to see a new linemate in David Pasternak if his normal mate Brad Marchand serves any time for the nut shot spear he gave the other night.  The Bruins haven’t fared well against the Sens this year as they are 0-3, but the way the Bruins are playing right now is the best they have played all year.  Give me a stack of the top line with Pasta if he is on there.

Austin Matthews – TOR vs TB – $7,600 (IMPLICATION GAME)

Matthews has played strong the whole year and he isn’t finished yet.  He has 12 points inhis last ten games and he is averaging 3.5 shots per game.  At home with last change, Coach Mike Babcock should be able to get Matthews plus matchups all night.  The Leafs are a great team to target at home because they have a solid shutdown line, and two other great offensive lines to get good matchups with teams that lack deep depth.  Tampa Bay will put up a fight tonight, but their season is all but over.  The Bolts play a semi decent defensive style of hockey but with the Leafs offense and being at home I don’t see a way that Matthews doesn’t shine.

Martin Hanzal – MIN vs COL – $4,400

The Wild have taken a turn and have won three out of their last four games.  Coming on the heels of a horrible stretch where they lost seven out of eight.  Hanzal has played great recently with five points in his last five games, and he has been shooting the puck semi regularly.  The only worry here is that the Wild aren’t really playing for anything and we don’t know who will play or sit and what lines will look like. Hanzal is cheap enough to play if he is in the lineup tonight especially against  a Colorado team that likes to give goals and shots up all night.

David Pasternak – BOS vs OTT – $7,100

Pasta hit a wall mid way through the season but has since broke out and has played great.  Pasta has six points in his last five games, and now the Senators are reporting that defenseman Erik Karlsson AND Cody Ceci are both out.  This is a huge game for both teams and look for Pasta to get in the mix tonight.

Connor Sheary – PIT @ NJ – $6,600

This kid is having a hell of a year, but yeah it helps when you play with arguably the best player in the National Hockey League. Sheary has stepped up big and I can tell you first hand Crosby is not the easiest person to play with, if he doesn’t like the chemistry with you then you won’t be on his line for long.  Sheary has that knack for finding the open spaces where he can get shots on net and he has been very successful this year.  His offensive net presence is solid and tonight with Crosby I like this line a lot.

Leon Draisaitl – EDM vs SJ – $6,600

This kid has been playing out of his mind!  He has 17 points in his last ten games, and he is riding an 11 game point streak and his line mate Connor McDavid is also riding an 11 game point streak.  These two could arguably be one of the best lines in hockey.  San Jose has had some difficulties lately with a 3-8 record over their last 11 games.  The Sharks will also be without Joe Thornton and Logan Couture who are two of their key players.  I don’t think the top line of the Oilers cools down yet and ill have some exposure tonight.

Jeff Skinner – CAR @ NYI – $6,200

Skinner has 13 points in his last ten games, and he is coming off of a three point game.  If you have been reading my write ups this year you will notice that I love playing skinner against teams that have weak depth lines.  The islanders are one of them teams.  Besides the Tavares line, they don’t have much help on the defensive side, and with Skinner lining up on the third line, he sees beautiful matchups all night.  There is a reason Skinner has been hot, teams can’t handle his skill at the depth lines.  It also helps that he sees a good amount of power play time too.  I could see another multi point night here for Skinner.

Seth Jones – CLS vs WPG – $5,000

Jones gets a bump up if Zach Werenski doesn’t play again, last game he played almost 24 minutes.  This is a big game for the Jackets because if they can win and the Penguins lose, they will get home ice against the Pens in the playoffs.  The Jets take a lot of penalties and they also have trouble killing them with a 79.6% kill rate.   Jones should be able to tee it up early and often here tonight, and he should be able to get a couple extra peripheral stats like blocks.

Zdeno Chara – BOS vs OTT – $4,400

Chara makes for a dart tonight, and he has played great in the Bruins push for the playoffs with points in three games straight.  Chara has actually been shooting the puck three times a game over this last couple game push, and he has logged solid minutes.  Chara also get you those blocked shots we all look for in our defenseman, and tonight with the teams having a playoff atmosphere, you can expect some blocks for chara as he will get tough matchups.

Julius Honka – DAL vs NSH – $2,800

We need to save salary tonight to play the studs we want in the desperate situations and Honka gets that spot.   Honka is getting opportunities because the Stars are pretty much done for the year and they want to see what their younger guys can do.  Last game Honka had five shots on goal and he also lit the lamp.  Honka also doesn’t mind blocking shots which is great for a super cheap guy and tonight against the Preds he will get plenty of opportunities to block shots.

Joonas Korpisalo – CLS vs WPG – $8,300

Korpisalo makes for an interesting play tonight because the Jackets are in a game they need to win for home ice advantage against the Pens in round 1 of the playoffs.  He has had a rollercoaster year but he has been decent at home with a small sample of three games.  He has a 2 GAA with a .932 save % but you can’t really take them numbers for granted, still I like his chances tonight if he can pull off the victory.  The Jets have enough offense to flash rubber at him all night and if he can turn one more away than his opposition he should have a fine night.

Pekka Rinne – NSH vs DAL – $8,300 (IF CONFIRMED)

Nashville needs to win out the rest of the year to stay away from the Blackhawks, which is a wise move.  Rinne has some solid upside tonight as he is on the road which should lower his ownership and he should still see enough shots on net to garner his salary.  I think  in crunch time the Preds offense comes to play tonight unlike the other night when they shit the bed on us.  Dallas has had defensive lapses all year and their penalty kill has been horrible. I think Rinne steals on here tonight with the Stars playing with no reasoning.
