NHL Power Plays 4/1/17
The regular season is winding down quickly with only about a week remaining. There are still several teams fighting and jockeying for that playoff spot. Tonight there is a smaller slate compared to normal with only six games on the main card. The Devils are the only team playing on a back to back, most of the teams have had some much needed rest with this condensed schedule. Looking at the remaining schedule and playoff races there are four teams that are eliminated and have nothing to play for (Red Wings, Devils, Jets, & Stars). The teams that need to win out and get help are the Lightning, Hurricanes, & Flyers, so we can expect them to bring everything they got tonight, and I’ll be targeting them.
When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves. I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP. Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!

Nazem Kadri – TOR vs DET – $6,100
Austin Matthews also makes for a great play tonight if you can afford him, but I’m gonna lean towards the Kadri line tonight because they are on the road. Since the Leafs don’t get to dictate matchups, Kadri will be playing a more offensive role. He’s riding a two game point streak and he has looked solid all year long. Detroit is having a rough year and they have nothing to play for this last week except a spoiler role. The Wings defense is leaky and they don’t have the speed or depth to hang with this young Toronto team. The Leafs should be all over the Wings tonight.
Jordan Staal – CAR vs DAL – $4,800
Another team fighting for their playoff lives is the Hurricanes, and they get a solid matchup tonight. Dallas is giving up over 3.5 goals against on the road and they also have the worst penalty kill in the league on the road with a 72.3% kill rate. Staal has twice as many points at home than he does on the road, and I like this top line tonight as they also play on the top power play together.
Claude Giroux – PHI vs NJ – $6,000
The Flyers have to win out to get a spot also and they will be leaning heavily on Giroux and Voracek’s line to help carry them. Philly gets last change here so the Sean Couturier line will try to shut down the Hall line, leaving the plus matchups for the Giroux line. New Jersey has been an awful team this year which was riddled with injuries and they lack depth. The Devils are allowing 33 shots on goal on the road and 8.5 SCA/60. If you want to save a little cash you can go down to the Combo of Jordan Weal and Wayne Simmonds who have been playing great lately and they get you exposure to the Giroux line through Simmonds and Weal has found himself on the second power play unit.
Sean Couturier – PHI vs NJ -$4,000
Yanni Gourde – TB vs MON – $3,500
Dereck Ryan – CAR vs DAL – $3,500
Leon Draisaitl – EDM vs ANH – $6,600
Draisaitl has been on a mission with a nine game point streak and 16 points in that time. He has a bonus clause in his contract that states if he finishes the year in the top ten of the league in points, he gets a healthy 1.4 million dollar bonus. I guess you could say he is shooting for that paycheck. Draisaitl has loved playing the Ducks this year with five goals and an assist over four games. This top line for Edmonton is hot and I want a piece tonight. Stack him with Connor McDavid.
Jeff Skinner – CAR vs DAL – $5,900
Skinner has been playing lights out lately with 12 points in his last ten games, and he has a point in every game except one. The thing I love about Skinner is that he hasn’t had a game with less than four shots on net over his last four games. He also gets the juicy matchups because he plays on the third line, and teams that don’t carry depth can’t handle him combined with Lee Stempniak. They play together on the powerplay also.
Connor Brown – TOR vs DET – $4,100
Brown has been playing great lately alongside Nazem Kadri with seven points in his last ten games. Brown saves you some much needed salary for the studs we want in desperation spots. Like I said earlier, the Leafs are fighting to keep their playoff lives and they have a ton of offensive firepower that the Wings can’t handle. Detroit is giving up the fourth most goals allowed on the road (3.30 GAA), and they are giving up just shy of 33 shots on net.
Jordan Weal – PHI vs NJ – $3,800
Lee Stempniak – CAR vs DAL – $3,500
Travis Konecny – PHI vs NJ – $3,700
Drake Caggula – EDM vs ANH – $3,300
Justin Faulk – CAR vs DAL – $5,400
Faulk has had a roller coaster season but he has shown some consistency lately proving offensive scoring chances. He has a ton of talent and he has that multiple point upside, and when he feels like it he can block a couple shots too. He quarterbacks the top power play unit and that’s where we want to attack Dallas.
Dustin Byfuglien – WPG vs OTT – $6,100
Big Buff has been a workhorse this year logging the most minutes in the league. He is the quarterbacking the power play and he is a playmaker at his size. With the season pretty much over for the Jets I can see Byfuglien taking more chances and trying to pad his stats, like last game against the Ducks he had six shots on net and three points. Ottawa will be without their top defenseman Erik Karlsson again tonight so I could Big Buff teeing it up early and often.
Cody Ceci – OTT @ WPG – $3,700
Our secret ace up our sleeve is starting to show as he has played solid hockey with the absence of Erik Karlsson. In the two games without Karlsson, Ceci has had a huge bump in ice time, and he is getting some power play time on the second unit. I like playing a guy like Ceci because he actually has a solid floor because he blocks a ton of shots, and he has been shooting the puck regularly. Winnipeg gives up over three goals a game at home and they allow more than 30 shots on net. Meanwhile the Jets will be firing shots themselves and Ceci should be able to tally multiple blocks.
Michal Del Zotto – PHI vs NJ – $3,500
Noah Hanifin – CAR vs DAL – $3,400
Frederick Anderson – TOR vs DET – $7,900
Freddy is the guy that can either give you a shutout out of nowhere or get yanked in the 1st period. He has won four of his last six games, and hasn’t allowed more than two goals in nine of his last ten games. I don’t see any way that the Leafs don’t help him tonight with offense, and helping him get the win. The Leafs give up a lot of shots on net so Freddy should get plenty of saves.
