NHL Power Plays 3/4/17
Happy Saturday ViceSquad! We got a pretty packed ten game slate on tap for tonight. Looking at the rest situation there are four teams playing on a back to back tonight, they are: Lightning, Jets, Blackhawks, and Red Wings. When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information but they tend to not be as quick because it’s the weekend. Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves. I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow; it’s a great tool and a necessity. Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP. Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!
If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on out premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

BOLD = Back to Back
*Third game in four nights
Patrice Bergeron – BOS vs NJ – $7,200
Bergeron has been a multi-point machine lately, he has 14 points in his last ten games, and four of them have been multi point efforts. Bergeron also sits third in the league with 3.75 shots on net per game. Boston is a very strong possession team and the Devils have really struggled lately. New Jersey has lost five games in a row and they have given up four goals in three of them. Bergeron might have a little lower ownership tonight because he will play the shutdown roll. He will be matching up with the Taylor Hall line so people might go down to the second line for the Bruins, but the top line along with Brad Marchand has been on fire. I’m sticking with the guys that are producing, even though they cost a pretty penny.
Connor McDavid – EDM vs DET – $7,900
It’s been a while since I have wrote McJesus up, but he is in play every night. The kid has ridiculous talent and hat trick upside every game. McDavid has a quiet 12 points in his last ten games and he is riding a four game point streak. With last change he should get the better matchups and he should get plenty of opportunities. Detroit is coming off of an overtime loss last night and they could be fatigued, which could end up in sloppy discipline and possible goals. Detroit has had issues on the road this year, giving up 3.19 GAA (24th), and over 32 SOG (22nd). Stacking McDavid up with Draisaitl and Klefbom could be a sneaky stack tonight.
Brian Little – WPG vs COL – $4,900
Little took a little five game hiatus without a point and he came back with three points in his last three games. He’s coming off of a multi-point game against the Blues and he gets a nice matchup tonight against the Avs. Colorado has been extremely generous to opposing teams giving up 3.25 GAA on the road, and over 33 shots per game. Not to mention they have the fourth worst penalty kill in the league with a 76.3% kill rate. Grab yourself some power play exposure so you have more upside. Stacking Little with Wheeler and Jacob Trouba is a good correlation play that should go lower owned than the Schiefele – Laine- Byfuglien stack.
Vincent Trocheck – FLA @ DAL – $5,700
Trocheck only has one point in his last five games and could go over looked tonight. People will be attacking the Stars on the power play and skip over Trocheck because he plays on the second unit, but he is averaging the fourth most time on the extra man advantage with 2:54. Trocheck will also get the better matchup as I think the Benn line matching up with the Barkov line, leaving Trocheck with the Seguin line. The most promising thing about Trocheck also is that his shot volume has been very good over his last couple games, averaging just under four shots per game.
Value plays to consider
Nikita Kucherov – TB @ BUF – $8,000
Kucherov is quietly on a massive heater in the shadows of Filipino Forsberg getting all the attention lately. Kucherov has 13 points in his last five games! Let that sink in for a minute… his shot volume has been ridiculously high, and I’m riding him tonight. Even though he will match up with the Ryan O’Reilly line he should be able to continue his massive shot volume. The Sabres are giving up a ridiculous 36.1 shots per game since the All- Star break. The Sabres penalty kill is also very weak in the bottom five even at home. I like Kucherov a lot tonight.
Patrick Laine – WPG vs COL – 7,700
Laine has found himself tied for second in the league with 31 goals, and he has four multi point games in his last five. This youngster has a ton of talent and a wicked shot. Laine is one of my favorite stacks tonight against the Avalanche with Mark Schiefele and Dustin Byfuglien. I could see Laine get another multi point night tonight, as the Avalanche are giving up over 33 SAA, and over 3.2 GA. If Laine can get matchups against anyone but the Avalanche’s top line, he should have open ice all night.
Tanner Pearson – LA vs VAN – $5,500
Pearson has been giving steady production and he is riding a four game point streak. Since the Kings got Jarome Iginla, they moved Tyler Tofolli back with Pearson and Jeff Carter to reunite “that 70’s line”. When they play together they have ridiculous puck possession numbers and they get ample amounts of opportunities. With last change they should get the plus matchups all night, and against the Canucks who lack any depth, That 70’s line should be in for a great night.
Ryan Spooner – BOS vs NJ – $3,900
Spooner has been playing pretty well with the amount of ice time he is getting, he has eight points in his last ten games and three of them have come on the man advantage. For 3.9k you get exposure to that expensive top line and the top power play of Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand, and I’ll take that any day of the week. Spooner makes for a solid punt value play tonight against the Devils.
Marcus Johansen – WSH vs PHI – $5,200
Johansen makes for an interesting play tonight against the Flyers. He has been shooting the puck semi consistently and he gets you exposure to Alex Ovechkin on the top power play unit. Philadelphia has been playing better recently with Steve Mason’s success, but the Capitols have too much fire power tonight. The Flyers penalty kill isn’t horrible, but they are still below average with a 79.6% kill rate.
Value Plays to consider
Dustin Byfuglien – WPG vs COL – $6,200
Byfuglien is my top defenseman tonight taking on the Avalanche. Big Buff is leading the league with 27:27 per game, that’s almost HALF the game! He also logs an average of 3:15 of power play time. He should be able to let the cannon loose as much as he wants tonight, and he also can block shots too. With the Avalanche giving up over 33 shots a game and over three goals per game, Big Buff could be in for a nice night. If you can’t muster up the cash for him, you can also look to Jacob Trouba – $5,500
Victor Hedman – TB @ BUF – $6,600
Hedman has a point in every game except one in his last eight games. He has stepped up and brought his offensive game out. He should be able to fire away at will tonight against the Sabres who are giving up over 36 shots on net per game since the All- Star break. Not to mention Hedman quarterbacks the top power play unit, where the Sabres struggle mightily with a 78% kill.
Keith Yandle – FLA vs DAL – $4,300
Yandle was once considered a power play specialist, as he is a great facilitator quarterbacking the extra man advantage. He isn’t as great as he used to be but he can still get the job done. Yandle plays on the top power play unit and that’s where we want to attack the Stars. Dallas has the worst penalty kill in the league on the road with a 70.5% kill rate. Yandle has seen a little uptick in his shot volume lately, which could result in a point tonight.
Value Plays to consider
Troy Stetcher / Ben Hutton
Juuse Saros – NSH vs CHI – $7,100
Saros will test your testicular fortitude tonight as he goes up against the Blackhawks who have been scoring at will, but they are playing on a back to back and their backup goalie Scott Darling is out with a growing injury, so we don’t know if they will run Crawford out there again or play their third stringer Jeff Glass. Either way, it looks to be the least threatening and the Preds offense has been very potent. Saros is a highly touted prospect that has flashed greatness this year but he has also conceited some shaky starts. If the Preds can keep their offense going, Saros will see plenty of rubber to merit a great night. Tough call.
Jonathan Quick – LA vs VAN – $8,300
In the three games quick has been back, he looked amazing in two of them. According to Vegas, a Quick is almost a lock for the win, and I agree. The question is shot volume, will Quick see enough rubber tonight and if he doesn’t can he pull a shutout off? Either way I still like him and he could be lower owned than guys in his price range like Braden Holtby.
