NHL Power Plays 3/23/17

Tonight we have a MASSIVE 12 game slate and a lot of options to choose from.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information.  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity.  Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that Big GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for tonight,  good luck!

The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also puckalytics.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on out premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

Team Targets Vegas Implieds –

Pricing is in DK format unless otherwise noted.

Conor McDavid – EDM @ COL – $8,300

McDavid is on fire, he has a five game point streak going and multiple points in FOUR of them.  Alongside Leon Draisaitl – $6,300 they have been taking the league by storm and have combined for 27 points in the last ten games.  Don’t look now but they get to take on the Colorado Avalanche tonight.  I’m not sure how their ownership will be tonight because there are some really juicy matchups that should go way over owned than the McDavid Draisaitl combo.  Colorado has given up at least FOUR goals in three games straight  and three power play goals.  The Avalanche are battling the Coyotes for the worst team in the league, their puck possession numbers are putrid with a 45.4 CF% rating and they are giving up 34.4 SA/60.  Im all over the McDavid and Draisaitl combo tonight.

Ryan Hartman – CHI vs DAL – $3,900

Hartman snapped an ugly eight game point drought, and has gained some confidence in coach Quenneville as he is now playing between the two elite snipers Patrick Kane and Artemi Panarin.  Anyone who plays between them gains my attention, especially with the matchup of the Stars tonight.  Dallas has been extremely leaky the whole season and over their last five games they are allowing 3.66 Goals against and 31 shots against.  Playing the power play units against the Stars has also been a very successful endeavor this year as the Stars have the worst penalty kill in the league on the road with a 72% kill rate.  I don’t see how the Blackhawks can’t put 4 or more on the scoreboard tonight and Hartman sits in a prime spot.

Vinny Trocheck – FLA vs ARI – $6,200

Trocheck and the Panthers have been on a massive struggle lately losing eight of their last ten games, granted they were all pretty tough matchups.  Trocheck has six points in the last ten games and has been shooting the puck pretty consistently with an average of three shots per game.  Arizona is a get right matchup for anyone in the league as they are just a horrible team.  Their road stats are plain ugly.  The Yotes have the second worst goal against (3.56 GAA), the second worst Shots against (34.4 SA), third worst PK (75.8% PK) and they are giving up 10.84 SCA/60 which is the worst in the league BY FAR.  Loading up on the Panthers seems like the thing to do tonight and with their recent struggles people might be off of them.  I’ll take some exposure.

Eric Staal – MIN vs PHI – $6,100

The Wild snuck out a victory last game against the Sharks, snapping a five game losing skid that put them way behind the Blackhawks in the standings.  Staal has been a bright spot for the Wild and he continues his strong play with nine points in his last ten games, and he is averaging 3.2 shots per game and just a hair short of a block per game.  The Flyers have given up at least three goals in four of their last five games to bring their road goals against to 3.36 GAA.  Philly takes the seventh most penalties on the road and their penalty kill has also taken a hit with a 76.8% kill rate.  With only a couple weeks left in the regular season, we can expect the Wild to try to make a run, and I like Staal tonight.

Patrick Kane – CHI vs DAL – $8,200

I don’t think I need to give a big introduction here as Kaner is one of the best wingers in the league and sits in a beautiful spot tonight, the only question is what will the ownership be?  Vegas has the Blackhawks pegged with 3.9 implied score which is huge.  Dallas has the worst penalty kill in the league and Kaner thrives on the extra man advantage.  Not to mention Kaner loves playing at the MadHouse on Madison as he has 14 more points at home than he does on the road.  Fire away, just make sure you differentiate your lineup with some other plays as he will be super chalky.

Jaden Schwartz – STL vs VAN – 5,400

It wouldn’t be a Votts write up if there wasn’t a guy facing the Canucks.  I figured I would skip the obvious Vladimir Tarasenko as he is pretty much a no brainer tonight, but he makes for a great combo with Jaden Schwartz.  Since putting the top line of Senko – Schwartz – Steen back together they produce at a great rate.  They play on even strength together and the top power play unit.  Schwartz has been shooting the puck a ton lately and a lot of his to do with his offensive presence and playing alongside Tarasenko as he opens the ice up.  Vancouver is the definition of “MEH”.  The Canucks are giving up 9.26 SCA/60 which is the second highest on the slate, and they also have the worst penalty kill in the league since the All-Star break.  The Blues are in a real nice spot tonight but just like the Blackhawks we need to be aware of the ownership numbers.  You can also dip down to a little mini stack if you want of like a Berglund – Pietrangelo as they both play on the top power play unit and you also get exposure to that lethal top line for the Blues.

Taylor Hall – NJ vs TOR – $6,000

Taylor Hall has been pretty much the only bright spot for the Devils beside maybe Kyle Palmieri.  He has been shooting the puck at an insane rate, he has 22 shots on net over his last four games!  I would only play him as a one off if you had the cash because Toronto is going to do whatever they can to shut down Hall’s line.  But the reason I like Hall tonight is that Toronto plays a super fast pace and they make mistakes and give a lot of shots on goal up, enter Taylor Hall.  Hall has a wicked wrist shot and if a team is going to give him as many looks as he has had in the past couple games then he almost has to light the lamp.  Toronto started the year out rock solid on the penalty kill and since the All-Star break they have fallen off a bit to an 80% kill rate, and they can be taken advantage of for a one or two goals.

John Hayden – CHI vs DAL – $3,500

Hayden lost a little ice time last game because Marion Hossa returned and the lines were full, but also the Blackhawks got down to a early deficit and they needed to claw their way back into the game.  Hayden did score a goal, but it was challenged for offsides and eventually overturned.  As I mentioned in my last article on Tuesday, Hayden saw a little ice time on the power play. Hayden has a real nose for the net and he is a good grinder.  Im expecting him to get a little more ice time tonight as the Hawks should be able to get a lead, but who knows.  At 3.5k you can fit the studs that are in a great spot tonight and you only need Hayden to put the puck on net a couple times and he has shown that he is willing to shoot.

Conor Sheary – PIT @ OTT – 6,600

This kid keeps producing at staggering rates playing alongside Sidney Crosby, and quite frankly he has made my write ups looks good lol.  Sheary has a point in 5 of his last six games, and he has multiple points in four of them.  He has meshed very well with Crosby and seems to find that open spot on the ice where Crosby finds him very often.  He’s got great offensive presence and yeah it does help playing with one of the best centers in the game.  With the Pens dealing with some injuries he has stepped up and he will go criminally under owned tonight.  Ottawa isn’t the greatest matchup but the Penguins create so many scorings chances that they will always have an opportunity to find the back of the net.

Alex Pietrangelo – STL vs VAN – $5,700

Pietrangelo keeps seeing huge minutes, and he has been producing.  He has 14 shots on net and six blocked shots over his last four games, which is a solid floor.  With the amount of ice time he is getting he should be able to produce them numbers on a consistent basis, and with tonight’s matchup against the Canucks he should be able to exceed them.  Pietrangelo has two power play points in his last three games and with the Canucks having the worst penalty kill rate since the All-Star break, he could tally a point on the extra man advantage tonight.

Duncan Keith – CHI vs DAL – $5,600

Keith isn’t really known for shooting the puck but he has great vision and he has a beautiful fake shot slapper that is actually a pass and it throws teams off when he does it.  He has been logging massive minutes and he plays on the top power play line, which is where we want to attack Dallas.  His shot volume has been up and if he gives me 3 shots a block or two and a point I’m ecstatic.

Torey Krug – BOS vs TB – $5,200

Krug has had a roller coaster year but lately he has been producing, he has seven points in his last ten and he has been firing the puck like he has been accustom to with just under three shots in those ten.  Both of these teams have lost three games straight and the Lighting have allowed 3.6 GAA over their last five games.  These are two pretty solid puck possession teams and something has to give, the Lighting are giving up the second most fantasy points to defenseman over the past month. The bruins are looking to sweep the lighting on the year and I think it happens tonight.

Oscar Klefbom – EDM @ COL – $5,300

Klefbom only has three points in his last ten games, but he has been logging big minutes on the point for the Oilers, and his shot volume has still been pretty solid.  I guess you can call it snake bit, but tonight he can take advantage of a Colorado team that loves giving up stats and goals.  The Avalanche also have a sub par penalty kill at home at a 80.5% kill rate.  Im looking to slip Klefbom in my stacks with McDavid and Draisaitl.

Corey Crawford – CHI vs DAL – $8,500

Crawford took one on the chin against the Canucks the other night and let up four goals but the three previous game he looked great.  I think this is a bounce back game tonight and at home he should be able to get it going.  He has a 14-6-3 record at home with a 2.28 GAA and a .926 save %.  The Hawks offense has so much fire power that I think they can hold Crawford up to grab the victory, and he should see plenty of shots as the Stars have a couple snipers on their team.

Sergei Bobrovsky – CLS @ WSH – $7,400

Bobrovsky is coming into tonight well rested, and he has played ridiculously good lately.  He has won seven games straight, and now has taken the lead in the league for save % and wins.  You are getting a massive discount because he has an extremely tough matchup tonight, but that discount looks tempting.  He should see plenty of work and if he can keep his mojo going, he could easily be one of the top goalies on the night with a victory.
