NHL Power Plays 3/21/17
We got a little bit of a hectic schedule tonight and our hands are full with an 11 game slate. Rest situations for a lot of teams will start to become a little bit of an issue as a lot of teams are playing a ton of games for the last three weeks of the season. Tonight we have five teams playing on a back to back and every one of them is also playing their third game in four nights.
When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information. Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves. I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that Big GPP. Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!
If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on out premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

Jonathan Toews – CHI vs VAN – $7,200
Toews is riding a four game point streak and is playing some solid hockey lately. I think he could go under owned tonight because he has had a major price bump and he is more expensive than guys like Patrice Bergeron and a couple other elite players. The Kane line will most likely be the chalk play on the Hawks tonight and for great reason, but pivoting to the Toews line can be successful too. Vancouver is giving up three goals per game on the road, they have a bottom ten penalty kill with an 80% kill rate, and they are giving up over 32 shots on goal per game. Toews will most likely line up with the Sedin twins line, and he should be able to get plenty of opportunities. Vancouver is giving up 9.37 SCA/60 which is the second highest on the slate. The Blackhawks could light the lamp several times again tonight like they did against the Avs on Sunday.
Brian Little – WPG vs PHI – $5,600
Little has five points in his last three games, and he is now on a line that I love. Skating between Patrick Laine and Nick Ehlers they can great a ton of offense. Little is a pretty solid shut down center also so it’s possible they match up with the Giroux line tonight who is weaker defensively. This game has some sneaky game stack value and I like both sides of this game.
Brayden Point – TB vs ARI – $4,900
Point hasn’t seen a big enough price bump yet playing on the top line with Nikita Kucherov. Tyler Johnson remains sidelined a little longer so Point will be centering the top line until he comes back, he will also be centering the top power play unit. Point has at least three shots on net in five out of his last six games. He also has been tallying points like a machine with five points in his last four games. One of the best indicators of what the coach thinks about a player is the ice time, well he has seen a major boost in ice time with a 15 minute average before Johnson was injured, to now getting over 21 minutes per game. Arizona played last night and they are just a bad team in general, they allow a ton of shots on net and their penalty kill is sub par. On the road the Coyotes are giving up over 3.5 goals per game. Get you some Brayden Point.
Derek Stepan – NYR @ NJ – $6,100
Stepan only has five points in his last ten but I think he could be in a get right spot tonight against the Devils. New Jersey is dealing with a multitude of injuries and their depth is depleted. The Devils have given up at least three goals in five of their last eight games. The Devils also have the second to worst penalty kill at home with a low 74% kill rate. Stepan is on the top power play and he could be in a good spot tonight. If you want to pay down a tad you can also look to Mika Zibanejad, who also plays on the top power play unit.
Max Pacioretty – MON vs DET – $6,700
The Habs are in a real good spot tonight at home and I love me some Pacioretty. Max has been in a three game point drought, but he has multi point upside tonight. Detroit is playing on a road back to back, their third game in four nights and their fourth game in six. The Wings looked extremely flat last night against the Sabres and couldn’t generate anything. Fatigue could play a factor tonight, and scoring chances will be plentiful. Detroit is giving up the 5th most goals on the road (3.31 GAA) and they are allowing 32.5 shots against. Montreal’s puck possession game is very strong at home (51.4 CF%) compared to the weak Red Wings (47.6 CF%) and not to mention the Wings are giving up 9.47 SCA/60. Add that up with the rest issues and the Habs could have a huge night. Stack em up!
Nikita Kucherov – TB vs ARI – $8,000
Kucherov snapped a two game drought against the Caps last game with two goals, giving him 13 points in the last ten games. He has multi point upside every night and he has meshed really well with Brayden Point. Getting last change against the bad Coyotes is one of the best matchups Kucherov can ask for. Kind of a no brainer tonight.
Conor Sheary – PIT @ BUF – $6,000
Sheary has played great lately with 12 points in his last ten, of course it’s always nice to play in a line with one of the best play makers in the league in Sidney Crosby. Sheary is also spending time on the point for the top power play unit and that’s where we like to attack Buffalo. Even strength wise the Sabres are giving up 36.5 shots against per game, which is ridiculous. Sheary gets a ton of grade A chances because he plays with Crosby and he has been taking advantage of them firing the puck a ton lately. The O’Reilly line will most likely match up with the Pens top line tonight but I’m still sticking with them.
Alex Steen – STL @ COL – $4,800
Steen has six points in his last ten games and has been shooting the puck pretty consistently. He draws a beautiful matchup tonight in Denver and makes for a great play. Steen plays on the second line so he will avoid the shutdown line (if that’s what you wanna call it) of McKinnon & Landeskog, but he also gets you some exposure to the lethal Vladimir Tarasenko on the top power play unit. Colorado has no problem giving goals up to teams in a hurry, the Blackhawks just put three goals on them 17 seconds apart from each other and the flood gates were opened. Colorado checks all the boxes for dfs as they give up over three goals a game, they allow more than 30 shots a game, and they have a bottom five penalty kill at 77.5% kill rate.
John Hayden – CHI vs VAN – $3,000
Hayden has looked really solid since his debut three games ago. He has three points and he has great offensive awareness. He is playing alongside Jonathan Toews and he is gaining the trust of coach Quenville as evidence of his ice time in those three games going up each game. Last game he played 17 minutes. For 3K you need a couple shots out of him to pay off his small price tag and tonight he gets a great matchup. Vancouver is not a great puck possession team by any means, and they have been giving up 34 shots a game since the All-Star game. You could do a lot worse for 3K.
Justin Schultz – PIT @ BUF – $5,900
Schultz has hit a little bit of a rough patch but tonight he should be able to get back on the horse. With the Penguins dealing with a ton of j juries and some key ones to their defensive core, they are relying heavily on Schultz. He has been logging a good amount of minutes, and his shot volume is still super solid, so I’m not worried about him tonight. With the Sabres giving so many shots up and their penalty kill so weak, Schultz should get all he can handle tonight.
Alex Pietrangelo – STL @ COL – $5,800
Pietrangelo has taken the point by storm since the Blues dealt Kevin Shattenkirk to the Capitols. Alex has seven points in his last ten games and five of them have been on the power play, where Shattenkirk was occupying. Pietrangelo’s shot volume has been pretty solid with 11 shots in his last three games, and he is also averaging two blocks over the last ten. He’s in a good spot tonight against the Avalanche who give up the most goals per game in the league on home ice.
Shane Gostisbehere – PHI vs WPG – $4,800
Gost has four points in his last seven games, but he could be an intriguing play tonight. He is known as a power play specialist and when you play the Jets you will get a ton of power plays, as they give up about 3.5 a game (2nd most in league). Winnipeg is also giving up the second most goals against in their own building.
Josh Morrisey – WPG @ PHI – $3,500
With the Jets still without Jacob Trouba for another week Morrisey gets a bump and he also gets power play time. He is averaging over 22 minutes of ice time since Trouba went down and he has been making the best of it, Morrisey has averaged 4.8 SHOCKS (shots & blocks) over the last six games, and for 3.5k you can’t ask for much more. If Morrisey can grab a point tonight he should smash value.
I can literally make a strong case to play about five or six goalies tonight tournaments, there are a lot of guys in strong spots.
Braden Holtby – WSH vs CGY – $8,000
We get a little discount tonight in Holtby since the matchup isn’t the greatest, he has been pretty solid at home though with a 1.78 GAA and a .930 save %. He should see plenty of rubber tonight against the Flames, and if he can get the win he should have a great night.
Al Montoya – MON vs DET – $8,400
Montoya makes for a little bit of a risky start tonight. He has only played four games at home this year but he does have a .968 save %. I think he gets plenty of offense tonight to get the victory as the Wings could be dealing with fatigue issues after playing a ton of games. If you have the extra cash I Like moving up to Corey Crawford also, the only thing that’s worries me is the shot volume.
