NHL Power Plays – 3/18/17

Happy St. Paddy’s Day weekend Vicesquad!  Now that we aren’t drinking any more green beer, we can feast ourselves on a nice eight game slate tonight.  I wont be covering any of the early games, but if you have any questions feel free to hit me up in the Slack channel or on the Twitter machine.  We have just barely over three weeks left of the regular season and its turning into crunch time for teams.  You are going to notice that teams that are jockeying for their playoff lives will be leaning on their big players to carry them over the hump, and even the teams that are somewhat comfortable will be playing hard to get the top spots.  But not only the big players are in play, because teams that are on the verge of a playoff birth are going to give everything they have to win and that’s what we want to look for as DFS players.  Moving onto tonight, there are only two teams playing on a back to back and they are the Rangers and the Ducks.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information.  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity.  Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!

The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also puckalytics.com.

If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on out premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

Connor McDavid – EDM vs VAN – $8,100

McDavid is still rolling along tied for the lead with Brad Marchand in points at 79 on the year, he also holds the lead for assists with 55 of them.  He has a ton of talent and great vision, with multi point upside every night.  McDavid is coming off of a three point game and he looked amazing.  Taking on the Canucks in his own building he should be able to slip away for some prime matchups and see a bunch of opportunities.  The Canucks are a below  average team at best, hey give up over three goals per game and they also give up 33 shots on net per game on the road.  McJesus is in a good spot tonight.

Eric Staal – MIN vs NYR – $5,700

This game could be a sneaky shootout,  the Rangers can give goals up in a hurry with their lack of defensive depth.  Both of these teams are in the top five for goals scored in each split, and they both give up chances, it depends on how much goaltending they can get to help out.  Staal has been shooting the puck on a consistent basis with15 shots in his last four games.  He get to play a more offensive role at home because they use the Koivu line to play the shut down role.  The last time these teams faced off there was a total of 11 goals,  u might want to get some exposure to this game and I really don’t kid playing a game stack here tonight.

Paul Stasny – STL @ ARI – $4,900

When the Blues put the line back together of Jaden Schwartz – Stasny – Vladimir Tarasenko, I immediately want exposure.  This line produces a ton of offense and they are hard to keep down.  Stasny hasn’t exactly set the world on fire lately, but his shot volume has risen immensely with his new line mates.  Last game Stasny had fe shots on net against the Sharks, and they are a solid defensive team that suppresses shots.  Now Arizona is a whole different monster, they will see a lot of Oliver Ekman-Larsson but that doesn’t bother me a ton.  Arizona plays a little better at home, but they are still giving up 33 shots on goal, and their penalty kill is below standard.  The line stays together on even strength and on the power play so they make for a solid stack also.

Nick Schmaltz – CHI @ TOR – $4,300

Schmaltz became a value play instantly when Artem Anisimov went down with an injury.  Schmaltz was slotted in between what could be argued as the the most lethal wingers in the league Patrick Kane and Artemi Panerin.  Toronto has a lot of firepower, but they are a young team and they make a lot of mistakes that lead to turnovers, and with Kane and Panerin on the ice they will make you pay.  The Maple Leafs are also giving up just short of 33 shots on net in their own building.  Since the All-Star break the Leafs have had trouble killing penalties with a 79% kill rate.  Schmaltz sees time on the second unit.

Calle Jarnkrok – NSH @ CAR – $3,600

Jarnkrok makes for an interesting play tonight because he plays on the third line and he will match up with the Canes depth lines, but he also sees some time on the power play for a little additional opportunities.  The Hurricanes PK has been pretty solid so I’m not trying to target the power play here, but their even strength number have been pretty weak.  Carolina is giving up the most scoring chances on the slate tonight (9.9 SCA/60).  Jarnkrok also plays alongside James Neal, who has enough talent to be a top six player any team in he league.  If you need some salary relief you could roll out Jarnkrok.

Patrick Kane – CHI @ TOR – $8,000

Kane has been on a terror with 17 points in his last ten games!  He has a four game point streak going, and he has six games with multiple points in his last ten, that’s amazing.  Kane has also been shooting the puck at a high rate over four per game.  He facilitates just as good as he snipes, he is a dual threat.  Toronto plays a very fast pace, and they give up a lot of opportunities, Kane should be able to capitalize on a mistake or two tonight, maybe even on the odd man advantage.

Vladimir Tarasenko – STL @ ARI – $7,100

Senko ended his two game point drought with two points last game against the Sharks.  He looks to continue tonight against the Coyotes who like giving goals up.  The Coyotes are giving up 33 shots a game in their own building which is the third worst in the league.  They are also giving up 9 SCA/60 which is entirely too much especially with a lethal top line like the Blues.  Tarasenko should have plenty of opportunities tonight even if he draws the tougher matchup that the Coyotes have to offer.

Leon Draisaitl – EDM vs Van – $6,100

With Draisaitl back on the top line, the Oilers have a potent top line.  With last change at home they can maneuver the lines to get better matchups sand take advantage of the weak defensive matchups.  Draisaitl has multiple points in two game straight and he has an opportunity to make it three tonight against the bland as can be Canucks.

Jeff Skinner – CAR vs NSH – $5,600

Skinner has six points in his last seven games, but we aren’t sure if he will play tonight because he was cut by a skate last game against the Wild.  Nashville is a good team for dfs purposes because they have a line or two that can light the lamp in a hurry, and they also like to give goals up in a hurry also.  Skinner is playing on the third line for Carolina and he gets plus matchups nightly because he has a ton of talent and he is matching up with the weaker bottom six players.  He is also playing on the power play, where Nashville has struggled mightily since the All-Star break with the leagues third worst penalty kill at just a 73.8% kill rate.  If Skinner plays tonight I like his upside

Marcus Granlund – VAN vs EDM – $3,600

Granlund makes for an intriguing play tonight as he will most likely go unnoticed.  He has five points in his last five games, and he is riding a three game point streak.  He is playing in the top line with the Sedin twins and he also plays on the top power play line.  The matchup is better than what it seems at first glance, since the All-Star break Edmonton has the worst penalty kill in the league with a horrible 68.3% kill rate.  The  Oilers are also giving up 9.44 SCA/60.  For 3.6k Granlund is worth a shot in a gpp.

Alex Pieterangelo- STL @ ARI – $5,700

Pietrangelo has been extremely productive since Kevin Shattenkirk was dealt to the Caps.  He has eight points in his last ten games, and he has become a staple on the power play for the Blues.  He is averaging 4.5 SHOCKS (shots & blocks) for a solid floor, and if he can sneak one in tonight he should pay that price tag off no problem.

Roman Josi – NSH @ CAR – $6,100

Josi has been a steady part of the Preds production, he is riding a four game point streak and he is a staple on the power play for the Preds.  Carolina gives a ton of scoring chances up and believe it or not, their defense has taken a beating.  Let alone their penalty kill, since the All-Star break the Canes have the 24th ranked penalty kill with a 78.2% kill rate.  There will be goals in this game tonight and I honk Josi gets a point minimum.

Oscar Klefbom – EDM @ VAN – $5,400

Klefbom has four points in his last ten games but he makes up for his lost production by shooting the puck a ton and blocking a ton of shots.  Vancouver isn’t an offensive powerhouse but he should still get a couple blocks tonight.  Vancouver has the second worst penalty kill in e league on the second half of the season, and if Klefbom can tally a point or even an extra man advantage point he should have a nice night.

Matt Dumba – MIN vs. NYR – $3,700

Dumba is in play at a mere 3.7k just because the Wild have so much offense.  Dumba was seeing time on he top power play unit and he is still in play even if he doesn’t play there tonight.  He has a very good shot from the point and he also doesn’t mind blocking a shot or two.  The Rangers also have a lot of offense and Dumba should get a couple extra points with blocks alone tonight.  Lately, the Rangers have been having a rough time killing penalties as they have a 75.9% kill rate since the All-Star break.  If Dumba can squeak in a point with a couple shots he should smash that price tag.

Cam Talbot – EDM vs ARI – $8,300

Talbot should be a Vegas favorite tonight as the Canucks don’t like to score, the question is will he see enough rubber to justify the price?  I like that he is playing at home and he “should” get the victory. In two games they have faced off this year Talbot is averaging 7.7 DK points. Can he do it again tonight?

Martin Jones – SJ vs ANH – $7,800

Goalies are in a rough spot tonight and there really isn’t one goalie that I’m searching out to use that has upside without a lot of risk.  Jones has been pretty solid at home with a .918 save %.  He should see 30 shots, as long as his offense can produce more than h let’s in he should be ok tonight.

If your feeling frisky tonight, you can try to throw a dart with either a Corey Crawford or Freddy Anderson, if one of them guys has a great save night they should produce huge numbers as there will be a ton of rubber flying around. It’s not for the feint of heart though.
