NHL Power Plays – 3/16/17

It’s Thursday night, and you know what that means…. 12 game mega slate!  I’m expecting the scoring to be pretty inflated tonight, but we don’t need to worry about ownership as much because the bigger slates even out ownership.  There will still be some chalk plays but don’t be afraid to play the guy if you like him,  because you can differentiate your lineup easily.  There are four teams on a back to back tonight: Flyers, Bruins, Red Wings, and the Blues.  Every team except the Red Wings are also playing their third game in four nights, and fourth game in six nights.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information .  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity.  Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!

The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also puckalytics.com.

CENTERS

Patrice Bergeron – BOS @ EDM – $7,200

Bergy has been rolling along as one of the top Centers in the game, he has 13 points in his last ten games and he is currently riding a three game point streak.  He only has two games out of his last ten that he didn’t record a point.  Bergeron has been firing the puck early and often also,  with an average of 4.5 shots on goal per game in the last ten.  Boston is playing on a back to back but I still like the spot tonight.  Edmonton has given up at least three goals in five of their last seven games. The Oilers are also giving up 9.27 SCA/60 and if they give that many up to the Bruins they will be in trouble. Edmonton has been having trouble on the penalty kill also, since the all star break they have the worst penalty kill in the league with a 70.3% kill rate.

Mikko Koivu – MIN @ CAR – $5,600

Koivu plays the shutdown roll at home, but with the Canes getting last change he usually gets to play a more offensive role.  Koivu is averaging just under three shots per game over his last ten games, and he has seven points in that time and three power play points.  I’m not targeting the power play guys here because the canes have a pretty decent penalty kill.  I do want to target the even strength lines though because the Canes are giving up 9.9 SCA/60 in their own building.  Minnesota has a lot of firepower and they can make you pay dearly for mistakes.  I’m expecting the Wild to jump on the scoreboard and put up a real nice number tonight.

Brayden Point – TB vs TOR – $4,700

Point hasn’t disappointed us yet since he has been moved to the top line with Nikita Kucherov, he has three goals in his last two games.  Tonight is a good spot against the Maple leafs as they give up a ton of shots (33.5 SAG) and they are also allowing 3.09 goals against on the road.  Point makes for a solid play tonight.

Bo Horvat – VAN vs DAL – $4,700

Horvat and Sven Baertschi have been pretty much the only bright spot of the Canucks this year.  The sedins are getting older and it’s time for the young guys to step up, even thought their team is probably the blandest in the league.  But Horvat has played pretty solid hockey and he has been getting more and more opportunities.  Horvats shot volume has decreased recently but he draws a great matchup tonight on paper.  The Stars are giving up the most goals in the league on the road (3.73 GAA), and their penalty kill is the leagues worst at 72.3% kill rate.  Horvat should go extremely underowned and he does have some upside tonight.  I don’t mid stacking him up with his mate Sven Baertschi for some correlation.

Ryan Strome – NYI vs WPG – $3,500

Strome makes for an intriguing gpp value play tonight as the masses will all be on the top line for the Islanders and actually I love this game stack.  Strome is extremely cheap and you can get exposure to the top power play unit with John Tavares.  The Jets take a ton of penalties and their penalty kill is weak at just a 79.4% kill rate.  The Islanders have an implied score of 3.5 tonight and if you are looking for plays that can be lower owned then Strome is your guy.  Strome could be stacked with Josh Ho-Sang as they play together on even strength and they are both super cheap and have some upside.

WINGERS

Nikita Kucherov – TB vs TOR – $8,000

Kucherov is hot, he has 14 points in the last ten games and he has been shooting the puck a four times a game.  Toronto gives up a ton shots on net, and Kucherov should have a big night as the Bolts get last change and get to dictate the matchups.  Kucherov also loves playing the Leafs, in two games against them this year he has a goal and four assists.  Since the All-Star break, Toronto has struggled with their penalty kill and they are ranked 24th with a 77.6% kill rate.  I like me some Kucherov and Brayden Point tonight with a side dish of Viktor Hedman.

Patrick Laine – WPG @ NYI – $7,300

Laine has a ton of talent and he isn’t afraid to take shots, he has been firing away 3.5 shots per game over his last ten.  Laine will see the Depth matchups tonight as the Tavares line should match up with the wheeler line.  The Islanders lack any type of shutdown depth and they are allowing over 30 shots on net and just barely under three goals per game at home. Laine should have plenty of opportunities tonight.

Joshua Ho-Sang – NYI @ CAR – $3,300

Ho-Sang has been proving his worth since being called up and showing a ton of will.  He has four points in his last four games and last night he looked great.  He makes for a solid value play tonight as his salary hasn’t really risen enough.  He a feisty little grinder with some speed and he does have some decent stick handling skills.  Since being called up he has been given more and more ice time each game and he is also seeing more power play time.  You can do way worse for 3k.

Tanner Pearson – LAK vs BUF – $5,500

Pearson let us down the other night as he didn’t record a point, but the good part is he shot the puck five times.  Buffalo loves letting the other team pepper their goalie with an average of 34.7 shots against per game on the road, they are also letting in over three per game.  Pearson should be able to stay away from the shutdown line of Ryan O’Reilly, and when the kings get to a power play they get to tee of on the leagues 2nd worst penalty kill with a 73% kill rate.  Look for Pearson to have another good shooting night with the possibility of lighting the lamp.

DEFENSEMAN

Victor Hedman – TB vs TOR – $6,500

Hedman is expensive but I love playing him in the fast paced games because he excels.  He logs big minutes and quarterbacks the power play on the blue line.  Hedman has 11 points in his last ten games, and he has been averaging three shots per game over the last four.  Hedman also has seven power play points in the last ten games.  Like I said earlier, Toronto makes mistakes and they allow a ton of shots on net and Hedman can take advantage of the up paced game.

Jake Muzzin – LA vs BUF – $4,400

Muzzin is as much a facilitator as Drew Doughty but he also cost a bunch less, and he shoots the puck more than Doughty.  He also plays on the top power play unit, and plays over 22 minutes a game.  With the Sabres allowing 35 shots on goal per game and the solid possession number the kings have, I don’t see how muzzin has a bad night.

Nick Leddy – NYI vs WPG – $4,500

Leddy has been leaned on pretty heavily since the Islanders have been without Johnny Boychuk.  Leddy has been playing about 23 minutes In that time and he plays on the top power play unit.  Leddy has seven points in his last ten games, and is in a good spot tonight against the Jets.  Winnipeg takes a ton of penalties and they have trouble killing them.  Leddy will have plenty of opportunities tonight.

GOALIES

Braden Holtby – WSH vs NSH – $7,800

Holtby get a reduced price tonight because the matchup is tough.  He has been rock solid at home with a 12-6-1 record and sporting a 1.78 GAA and a .931 Save %.  He will see plenty of rubber tonight and if he can fend off enough to get the victory he should have a great night.

Andrei Vasilevskiy – TB vs TOR – $7,900

Vasilevskiy has been nothing short of great lately.  Maybe he just needed some regularity, and now that Ben Bishop is gone he is seeing all the ice time he can handle.  When goalies get in a groove they start seeing the puck well and it also helps when your team is helping you on the offensive side.  But over the last ten games Vasilevskiy has a 1.74 GAA and a ridiculous .945 save %.  Toronto has a lot of offensive firepower and he should see well over 30 shots.  If Vasilevskiy can sneak out a victory on home ice tonight he could be in the running for one of the top goalies of the night.
