NHL Power Plays – 3/14/17

***** The NJ Devils & Winnipeg Jets game has been canceled because of the snow.

Tuesday night is here and we got a nice looking eight game slate with a couple obvious spots to target tonight.  We are going to get a rematch of last night’s 12 goal game between the Carolina Hurricanes and the New York Islanders.  Maybe John Tavares can make it to the game tonight, we’ll see.   There are six teams playing on back to back nights, and every one of them is also playing their fourth game in six nights.  So fatigue could play a role tonight, because as teams wear down they tend to take penalties and that means inflated goal numbers.

When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting.  Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information.  Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves.  I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow; it’s a great tool and a necessity.  Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!

The advanced stats that I use and reference in this article come from Corsica.hockey and also puckalytics.com.

Conor McDavid – EDM vs DAL – $8,000

McJesus really needs no introduction here but I’ll give ya a little something.  He leads the league in points with 78 coming into tonight; he also leads the league in assists with 52 assists.  This kid has ridiculous amounts of talent. Tonight he squares off against the Stars, who have been pretty generous to McDavid so far this year.  McDavid has faced the Stars twice this year so far and he has three goals, an assist and eight shots on goal, to average out to 8.3DK points per game.  The Stars Have the worst penalty kill in the league on the road this year with a 72.7% kill rate.  Dallas is also giving up

Jeff Carter – LA vs ARI – $6,900

Carter and the Kings are starting to come around after a little bit of inconsistent play, but tonight is a get right spot.  The Coyotes are giving up the most goals on the road this year at 3.64 GAA; they also have the third worst penalty kill on the road with a 75% kill rate.  The Kings are known to be a great puck possession team and tonight they should be all over the Yotes.  Cater is averaging over four shots on net per game against them this year and I’m expecting him to tally a point or even two, maybe he can light the lamp.

Jordan Staal – CAR vs NYI – 5,200

These two teams played last night, and it turned into a football score just like I predicted.  Well they get a home and home series with them so they will square off again tonight.  The Islanders used both of their goalies last night and both of them looked bad; who will be in net tonight is a total guess.  Staal was matched up pretty much all night with the Tavares line because the Islanders had last change.  Tonight the Canes get to pick the lines and I am thinking they will try to free their top line up to get away from the Tavares line, which we all know that the Islanders lack any real depth.  Both teams give up tons of scoring chances and this game could be another great spot to find some value and some great offense.

Tanner Pearson – LA vs ARI – $5,400

Pearson is rolling with eight points in his last ten games, and he looks to add on to that tonight against the Coyotes.  That 70’s line will be getting last change and they should be able to stay away from Oliver Ekman-Larssen a bunch, and as we all know too well, when the Coyotes are on the slate we want to attack them.  The Kings struggled a little bit lately but their power play has been great, and if they get a couple opportunities tonight, the lamp should be lit.

Mitch Marner – TOR @ FLA – $5,900

Marner is riding a nice little five game point streak with six points in that time.  He also has two power play points.  It seems that Florida is finding new ways to lose, as they are now on a five game losing skid.  Over the last five games the Panthers have been giving up over three goals a game, and the history against the Leafs doesn’t look good either.  Toronto is a very fast team and they have a ton of fire power.  The Leafs have scored at least three goals in every meeting so for against the Panthers, and Marner has been a recipient of four points in those games.  The Panthers will look to take the Matthews line out and try to contain the Kadri line, leaving the Marner line to the depth matchups, something I think that Marner can take advantage of.

Joshua Ho-Sang – NYI @ CAR – $3,000

Ho-Sang has been proving his worth since being called up and showing a ton of will.  He has four points in his last four games and last night he looked great.  He makes for a solid value play tonight as his salary hasn’t really risen enough.  He a feisty little grinder with some speed and he does have some decent stick handling skills.  Since being called up he has been given more and more ice time each game and he is also seeing more power play time.  You can do way worse for 3k.

Brent Burns – SJ vs BUF – $8,400

Burns will be licking his chops tonight; he will have ample amounts of opportunities to tee it up against the Sabres, as they love giving their opposition shots on goal.  I wouldn’t be surprised if Burns had double digit shot attempts tonight.  Also given that the Sabres penalty kill is putrid, burns is one of my top plays tonight.

Jake Muzzin – LA vs ARI – $4,400

Muzzin is as much a facilitator as Drew Doughty but he also cost a bunch less, and he shoots the puck more than Doughty.  He also plays on the top power play unit, and against the Coyotes that is a coveted spot.  Muzzin also plays over 22 minutes a game and that’s enough for me to play him tonight.

Justin Faulk – CAR vs NYI – $5,600

Faulk has had a roller coaster year but he has played like the Faulk we all know and love with a five game point streak.  He is logging over 25 minutes a game, and he is a focal point on the power play.  The thing I like the most about him is his shot volume has been really solid, that’s how he normally produces.  Hopefully he can keep the streak tonight.

Oscar Klefbom – EDM vs DAL – $5,200

Klefbom has gone five games without a point and this is the game I think he comes through tonight.  He has been averaging about five SHOCKS (shots & blocks) a game and that’s a solid floor.  Add in the fact the Stars penalty kill is horrible, and Klefbom has some nice upside tonight.

Martin Jones – SJ vs BUF – $8,300

Jones has been extremely consistent as he has not allowed more than two goals in his past six games. At home Jones has a 2.11 GAA and a .916 save %.  The Sabres have some fire power but they still aren’t scoring a ton either.  Jones should be able to see 30 shots tonight and Vegas loves him, he could have a solid night and I’ll be targeting him where I can afford him.

Cam Talbot – EDM vs DAL – $8,300

Most of the cheap goalies tonight all have extreme risks and I don’t see the upside of them compared to their downside.  Talbot should see plenty of rubber with the Stars firepower, but I think the Oilers offense helps carry him to a victory tonight.  With the Stars bad kill and shaky goaltending, if Talbot can sneak out a victory he should have a solid night.
