NHL Power Plays – 3/11/17
Saturday nights are usually bigger slates, and tonight is no different with nine games on tap. There are a couple early games going on but I’m only writing up the main slate, you can contact me if you have any questions about the early slate. Tonight we have five teams playing on a back to back, they are : Blue Jackets, Sabres, Panthers, Blues, and Penguins. The Sabres and the Jackets are playing a home and home which means they played each other yesterday and the result was pretty much expected with a 4-3 victory to the Jackets at home. There’s a couple nice matchup we can look to take advantageous tonight, and I’ll hit in them. Also the infamous injury ninja came to town and some key players are now sidelined so make sure you check the team lines for tonight.
When you are making you teams I can’t stress enough that you need to make sure your goalie is actually confirmed and starting. Sites like Dailyfaceoff.com, Leftwinglock.com, and Goaliepost.com are great places for information but they tend to not be as quick because it’s the weekend. Another great place to get up to the minute news and information is the teams and beat writers for the teams themselves. I have created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS for all of the NHL teams, and a separate list of all the beat writers for you to follow, it’s a great tool and a necessity. Now let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to help you take down that big GPP. Here are your Power Plays for tonight, good luck!
If you have any questions at all, don’t hesitate to contact me on out premium Slack chat, or you can hit me up on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

*Third game in four nights
Pricing is in DK format unless otherwise noted.
Evgeni Malkin – PIT @ VAN – $7,100
Gino has been on a mission lately with nine goals in his last four games. Pittsburgh is dealing with a ton of injuries right now, but their core has been rock solid in production. The Pens are averaging over three goals per game and over 31 shots on the road this year. Malkin should get the better matchup tonight as the Sedin twins will most likely match up with the Crosby line. I also like Malkin because he has Phil Kessel on his line who has a ton of talent himself. The Canucks are a very boring team and the pens should give them all they can handle tonight.
Jordan Staal – CAR vs TOR – $5,200
Stall has some major splits, he has double the amount of points at home than he does in the road. Staal has 24 of his 35 points at home. Tonight the Maple Leafs come to town and Staal should be in a pretty decent spot to produce. Toronto has given up at least three or more goals in nine of their last ten games. This game could make for a great game stack tonight. The Maple Leafs shoot the puck a ton, but their youth shines through as they make a lot of mistakes and they are prone to turnovers, which can be capitalized on. Not to mention the Leafs penalty kill has take a pretty drastic hit lately. Since the All star break the Maple Leafs have a 78.4% kill rate, compared to their 87% on the year as a whole on the road. Staal lines up on the top power play unit.
Tyler Bozak – TOR @ CAR -$4,700
Bozak has been playing great hockey with a four game point streak and he is coming off of two games straight with multiple points. The Hurricanes penalty kill is pretty stout so I’m not just targeting the special teams tonight. Carolina is giving up 10.14 SCA/60 and Toronto loves to shoot, so the Leafs should have plenty of opportunities tonight. Bozak’s line should be able to get the depth matchups tonight as the Hurricanes will try to shut down the Matthews line and the Kadri line, leaving the Bozak line with plus matchups. The Hurricanes have lost five of their last seven games and they like the Maple Leafs have given up at least three goals in five of their last six games. This game could be a sneaky shootout and I will have exposure to these teams tonight
Sam Gagner – CLS @ BUF – $4,300
Gagner show some life last night with six shots on net, and it was against the same exact team. He Sabres lack any kind of depth after their top six, which Gagner plays on the third line so he should get plenty of opportunities again tonight. Gagner was also moved back to the top power play unit again and that’s where I’m looking to attack the Sabres. This game also makes for a really good game stack tonight as they should both deploy their backup goaltenders, and there should be ample amounts of scoring chances. Last nights score was 4-3 with the Jackets coming out victorious, and I don’t see why there can’t be another big score tonight.
Mikael Baclund – CGY – WPG – $6,000
Backlund usually plays the shut down roll at home so I don’t target him much, but when he is in the road with first chance he gets set lose to become that goal score and facilitator. His shot volume has been great with 13 shots on net over the past three games and he has eight points in the last ten. Winnipeg takes a ton of penalties and they have massive trouble killing them with a 73.9% kill rate, which is the second worst in the league on home ice. Calgary has been on fire lately as they have tied their franchise record with eight wins in a row. This game could also have fireworks tonight.
Vladimir Tarasenko – STL vs NYI – $7,000
It’s been a little while since I have wrote up Senko, but he gets a nice matchup tonight. The Islanders lack any kind of depth behind the top line of John Tavares, and although they have played a little better recently, they are still giving up barely under ten scoring chances per 60. The Blues get last change tonight so Tarasenko should be able to free himself up and get plenty of opportunities to find the twine tonight. The Islanders are also in the bottom ten in the league on the penalty kill with a 78.9% kill rate. Look for Senko to have a good night.
Evander Kane – BUF vs CLS – $6,300
Something has gotten into Kane, he’s playing possessed shooting the puck in bucket loads. Even though his line plays the shut down role at home, I’m still going back to the well with him. The pivot has been averaging over four shots a game over the last ten games, and he has 29 shots in his last five! Someone that shoots the puck that much has to find the back of the net soon enough. The Jackets will most likely be deploying heir backup goalie Joonas Korpisalo, and he has been known to let in some fairly easy goals at times. Gimme the guy that’s been shooting a ton, but I don’t blame you if you want to go the Eichel line route.
Phil Kessel – PIT @ VAN – $6,600
Kessel has four points in his last four games, and tonight he gets to take on the bland Canucks. Vancouver will have their hands full with one of the most potent offenses in the league, and Kessel sits in a good spot tonight. He plays on the top power play unit, and Vancouver has been awful killing penalties in their own building with a 75.3% kill rate. The Canucks are also a pretty weak team possession wise with a 48 CF%. Kessel should also get the better matchup as the Canucks will do whatever they can to shut down Sid the Kid.
Nick Foligno – CLS @ BUF – $5,400
Foligno busted out of a three game point drought last night with a beautiful re-direct that slid in between the wickets. Buffalo is giving up over three goals per game since the All Star break, and they are allowing an insane 36.2 shots on net. If you give the Jackets that many shots they will make you pay, and if Columbus can find their mojo on the extra man advantage again they could pour goals in tonight as the Sabres have a putrid penalty kill, as last nights example of two power play goals.
Erik Karlsson – OTT @ COL – $7,400
Karlsson is back to his old ways of shooting the puck a ton and creating massive offense. Karlsson has 12 points huh his last ten games and he is averaging seven SHOCKS ( shots &a blocks) for an extremely high floor. He plays a ton of minutes and he quarterbacks the top power play unit, and the Avalanche have a hard time stopping the extra man advantage with a 78.3% kill rate since the All Star break.
Justin Schultz – PIT @ VAN – $5,500
Schultz has stepped up his game as the Pens are dealing with some injuries, he has a four game point streak going with seven points in those four. He plays a pivotal part on the power play where he has two power play goals in the last four games. As chalky as the Pens are tonight, there’s a good reason why. Don’t be afraid to play a chalk play or two, you can differentiate elsewhere.
Zach Werenski – CLS @ BUF – $5,200
Werenski had a great start to the year and then wore down it seems but he has played better recently with seven points in his last ten games. The promising thing that I like is his shot volume, he has been averaging just under three shots per game, and a block. Werenski plays a quarterback role in the top power play also, where the Sabres have massive trouble. He tallied an assist last night and tonight maybe he can light the lamp.
Rasmus Ristolainen – BUF vs CLS – $5,700
If we are stacking this game or even stacking anyone on Buffalo, we want to get Risto in there also. Risto lit the lamp last night, but he has been shooting the puck a ton. He plays big minutes for the Sabres and he also doesn’t mind blocking a shot or two, which he should get a couple to block tonight with the potent offense of the Jackets.
GOALIES (CHECK FOR CONFIRMATION)
Craig Anderson – OTT @ COL – $8,300
Anderson has been having a great year with a 9-3-0 record on the road sporting a 2.10 GAA and a .941 save %. If Anderson can see over 30 shots tonight he should be in a good spot because Vegas thinks he get the win easily. The Avs have been playing a little better recently but they still lack any depth for scoring.
Matt Murray – PIT @ VAN – $8,100
Murray has been great on the road this year, he has a 2.39 GAA and a .920 save %. Vancouver doesn’t score in bunches, but they don’t shoot in bunches either. Murray get a lot of help from his offense for wins and on a night like tonight, I’ll take the win. The Pens do give up a lot of scoring chances so he should see some work tonight. If he can see a solid shot volume and get the win, he makes for a good play.
