NHL Power Plays 2/9/17
*** Boston is getting a ton of snow and the game might be canceled, keep an eye out for news!
Hey Vicesquad, we had a day off yesterday which is nice sometimes to regroup our thoughts after a massive 12 game slate. Only thing is, we get another monster 11 game slate tonight! All the teams are pretty well rested including the Bruins who have had five days rest and the Panthers who are on six days rest. I won’t be taking fatigue into play tonight but some teams coming off that mandatory buy week might give me a small amount of pause. There are three matchups tonight that are blatantly obvious and I will point them out in the article, but I will also try to give you some guys that that are not in them matchups, the purpose of this article is to find you that GPP gem that’s gonna help you take all the tournaments down. If you are looking for cash game plays, you can check out @Homercles cheat sheet on our site. Also try to keep an ear out for late scratches and or goalie confirmations, one of the best ways you can do that is my twitter list. well lets dig in and see what we can find for tonight, here are you Power Plays for Thursday night. Good luck!

Sidney Crosby – PIT vs COL – $8,500
I don’t there is much to be said about Sid the kid that you don’t already know. He leads the league in goals, and points and is arguably the best player in hockey. Im trying everything I can to get Crosby in my lineups tonight as he has a JUICY matchup tonight against Colorado. He will probably carry heavy ownership but it’s a really big slate so it should knock him down a tad. The Avs are just a bad team in all facets of the game right now and with Crosby’s firepower I just don’t see how he doesn’t light the lamp. I’ve been wrong before and if I was a betting man, id like the wager.
Evgeny Kuznetsov – WSH vs DET – $5,600
Kuznetsov isn’t slowing down any time soon I don’t think, he has 13 points in his last ten games with five of them being multi point efforts. Kuznetsov is a great facilitator with shifty speed, and his matchup is solid tonight. The Red wings are not a strong puck possession team, this is a battle of the teams on two different spectrums in terms of Corsi %. Detroit is giving up the seventh most shots on net on the road, and they are also bottom ten in goals against on average. The wings are also giving up the third most scoring chances in the league on the road this year at 9.43 SCA/60. Washington has a lot of fire power and they should be all over the wings tonight. Kuznetsov also sees time on the second power play unit for Washington which is ranked seventh in the league, while the Wings are a middle of the road team on the kill.
Brandon Dubinsky – CLS vs VAN – $3,900
Dubinsky has nine points in his last ten games, and for some reason DK seems to lower his price. His shot volume has gone down a tad over the last couple games but he should be able to pick it up tonight against the Canucks. Vancouver is another weak puck possession team, and it shows by their advanced stats. The Canucks are bottom ten in shots against per 60 and they are also bottom ten in goals against per 60. If Vancouver expects to give up over 32 shots tonight like their average, they are in for a rough night. Paying 3.9k for a top six player on a team with mega firepower against a pretty weak team seems like a no brainer. Don’t forget Dubinsky also sees time on the second power play unit also.
Derrick Brassard – OTT vs DAL – $4.900
The Sens are finally getting a little bit of regularity with their lineups and Brassard gets to play alongside Mark Stone on the top line and also on the top power play unit. Brassard has seven points in his last ten and I really like this top line. They should be able to create a lot of chances tonight, the only thing I am worried about is the ownership they might carry. Dallas is giving up the most high dangerous scoring chances, and their penalty kill is horrendous. Stacking Brassard up with Stone and Karlsson seems like a beautiful play tonight. Or you can fire up the next guy on this list with a defenseman for lower ownership.
Kyle Turris – OTT vs DAL – $5,500
Turris is averaging 3.1 shots on goal over the last ten games and he has seven points in the last ten also. Dallas is giving up 10.14 scoring chances against per 60 at home which is the most in the league. The Stars are also one of the worst penalty killing teams in the league, and Turris plays on the top power play unit. Look for a handful to be put on the board tonight.
Alex Ovechkin – WSH vs DET – $8,100
Ovie looks to let the cannon loose against the Wings tonight who have lost six out of their last eight games. In 18 games, Ovechkin averages 5.7 shots on goal against the Red Wings. Detroit is going to have a very tough time containing Ovie as the Caps have been really cruising along and their power play has been very good. Ovechkin might be my top play of the night.
Phil Kessel – PIT vs COL – $6,200
Kessel had an off game last game against the Flames but the two games before that he had five shots on goal in each game. This matchup tonight against the Avalanche is very hard to look away as it is too good, even if it is super chalky. Kessel should match up against the Duchene line, and that’s a plus matchup. He is also playing on the top power play unit so it helps you get exposure to Crosby on the man advantage. Kessel is a very gifted player and he can light the lamp at any moments notice.
Cam Atkinson – CLS vs VAN – $6,900
Atkinson’s having a very solid year so far cruising along at a point per game pace. He loves to shoot the puck early and often, and he should match up very well with the Canucks tonight. Since the Jackets will get last change, they should be able to keep Atkinson away from the top line of the Sedins, which have strong possession numbers, giving Atkinson more open looks and better opportunities. With Atkinson’s fire power I don’t see how he stays off the stat sheet tonight.
Jakob Voracek – PHI vs NYI – $6,500
Voracek and Claude Giroux have been having a really off years so far, and with Dave Hakstol benching Their best offensive Defenseman Shane Gostisbehere it doesn’t help matters. The Flyers pretty much have no choice to play the Ghost as their power play has been atrocious without him. Voracek should be able to stay away from the Tavares line at home tonight as I believe the Couturier line should try to shut them down all night. Leaving Voracek the weak matchups, which will be plus matchups all night. Voracek has been shooting the puck lately with 16 shots in his last four games. The Islanders give up a ton of scoring chances (10.12 SCA/60) and they lack the depth needed to stop deeper teams like the Flyers. I think Voracek could be in for a nice night.
Kenny Agostino – STL @ Tor – $2,600
Agostino has taken the league by storm I guess, he has produced will in the AHL and he is proving his worth in the two games he has played so far. In his two games he has recorded a point in each game and he also has lead the Blues in shots on goal in both games. If he can continue even his shot volume he will pay that salary off easily. Toronto has been having a lot of trouble on the defensive end and maybe Agostino can capitalize tonight, he also plays on the second power play unit.
Erik Karlsson – OTT vs DAL – $7,000
Karlsson has has a little bit of an inconsistent year so far, as he is normally right on par with Brent Burns. Karlsson is a big part of the offense for the Senators and he quarterbacks the power play and logs massive minutes. His goals and assists haven’t been super consistent, but he shoots the puck a ton and that should help tonight against the Stars who have trouble stopping pucks on the penalty kill.
Zach Werenski – CLS vs VAN – $4,800
Seth Jones has taken a price increase over Werenski but that’s probably warranted because Werenski has been in a massive rut. There’s an old saying that NCAA college players can’t handle the NHL schedule and they flame out after all star break. Well it’s definitely possible, but Werenski has shown promise over the last two games with nine shots on goal, maybe he is turning a new page? I wouldn’t blame you one bit for playing Jones over Werenski tonight, but I’m rolling with the top power play minutes.
Justin Schultz – PIT @ COL – $5,100
Schultz is still seeing top power play time as the Pens ease Letang back into the lineup coming back from injury. Schultz is averaging over 21 minutes of ice time in his last ten games, and he has produced 11 points in that time. Paying for Schultz gets you great exposure to the Penguins high octane offense and exposure to that top power play unit, which could have a field day tonight. I like Schultzy tonight.
Johnny Boychuck – NYI @ PHI – $4,300
Boychuck only has two points in his last ten games, but if you look at his logs he is a steady contributor in SHOCKS (shots & blocks). In the last ten games he is averaging three shots on goal and 1.5blocks per game. That gives you a very solid floor at his price, and if he can pitch in a point tonight he will pay off that salary handsomely.
Braden Holtby – WSH vs DET – $8,500
Holtby is my top option tonight Andrés he is expensive, but he has been phenomenal. He owns two shutouts in his last ten games, and that along is solid but at home he has a 1.67GAA and a .935 save %. He has been unstoppable and tonight is no different with the 25th ranking scoring team Red Wings coming to town.
Sergei Bobrovsky – CLS vs VAN – $8,300
BOB has been very solid at home with a 1.92GAA and a .936 save %. He should be a pretty solid favorite tonight, and Vancouver doesn’t have the depth or firepower to hang with the Jackets. The Jackets tend to give up a bunch of scoring chances at home and if BOB can turn them away he should have a good night.
