NHL Power Plays 2/23/17

Well the NBA All-Star break has come and gone, but I think we may have found a couple new players for NHL which is always a good thing.  Hopefully one day these contests can have the same payouts every day, like they have been for the last week.  Tonight’s schedule is a little bit different for a Thursday night, there’s only six games on the slate but there are some nice contests to jump into.  Looking at rest situations, Boston is the only team on a back to back tonight as they continue their West coast road trip.  There’s a couple juicy matchups tonight to take advantage of even though there are only six games.  Lets dig in and see if we can find you that gem that’s going to help you take down a huge GPP.  Here are your Power Plays for Thursday night, good luck!

CENTERS

Jonathan Toews – CHI vs ARI – $6,300

Toews has broken out of his funk this year in a huge way,  he is playing out of his mind right now with nine points in his last four games! He is also carrying a four game point streak into tonight’s game. I think he could carry lower ownership tonight  because the Hawks will be getting last change, meaning they should be able to free up the Patrick Kane line to get the better matchups.  Arizona is a bad team and they are at their worst on the road.  The Coyotes are giving up 10.73 SCA/60 on the road, which is the most in the league.  Arizona is also giving up over 34 shots on net per game, and they are allowing Just shy of 3.5 Goals Against per game, that my friends is what you call bad.

Austin Matthews – TOR vs NYR – $7,600

Matthews has been hot tallying six point sin his last three games and he is averaging just shy of four shots on net per game.  The Rangers play at a fast pace just like the Maple Leaf’s so tonight’s game should be fast with a lot of shots and scoring opportunities.  The Rangers have been good at limiting chances this year and they own the second best goals against record, only giving up 2.37 GAA on the road this year.  But the Rangers lack defensive depth and they give up a decent amount of Scoring chances (8.19SCA/60).  The Kadri line should try to shut down the top line of the Rangers tonight leaving the Matthews line with a little better matchup, and with the way the Leaf’s have been playing lately, Matthews has been matchup proof.

Calle Jarnkrok – NSH vs COL – $3,500

Jarnkrok has been playing solid hockey and makes for a great value play tonight.  Jarnkrok has six points in his last seven games and he has a real solid shot volume, especially for a guy at is his price.  He is playing on the third line alongside James Neal and Colin Wilson, and he will get the  juicy depth matchups against Colorado.  The Avalanche see like they are just going through the motions at this point as they have lost seven of their last eight games.  Colorado is giving up the fourth most goals per game in the league, they are giving up over 33 shots on net per game, and they have the leagues 26th ranked penalty kill with a 76.1% kill rate. Nashville should be all over the Avs in this game and Jarnkrok makes for a super value play.

WINGERS

Patrick Kane – CHI vs ARI – $7,700

Kaner loves playing in front of his home crowd at the Madhouse on Madison and tonight he gets to shine against the troubled Coyotes.  He is averaging over a point per game and four shots on net in the past ten games.  In the two games Kane has played against Arizona this year he is averaging 5.3 DK points, which is a small sample for sure but its also what you would expect.  With Arizona being such a bad team, and the Hawks getting last change, its hard to get away from Kane.  His ownership will be interesting to see tonight as there are also a couple other good games and matchups which should even it out somewhat.

Max Pacioretty – MTL vs NYI – $7,000

Pacioretty makes a strong play tonight where a lot of people will gravitate towards other games, but he gets a nice matchup himself tonight.  With last change at home against the Islanders he should be able to stay away from the Tavares line leaving him positive matchup’s all night.  The Islanders are giving up the fourth most shots on net on the road, they are allowing over three goals per game, but the thing I keep coming back to looking at is that the Islanders are giving the second most scoring chances per 60 in the league.   Pacioretty has been playing very well lately and he has a great spot to light the lamp tonight.

James Neal –  NSH vs COL – $6,200

Forsberg and Arvidsson are both in beautiful spots tonight that’s pretty obvious.  But Neal has been playing pretty good hockey lately and he bring in a four game point streak to tonight.  Neal has six points in those four games.  You also get exposure to the Forsberg line with Neal as he gets to play on the top power play unit with them  guys.  This game should be in the Preds hands pretty quickly tonight.

Josh Leivo – TOR vs NYR – $3,800

Leivo keeps producing and is proving his worth on the Leaf’s.  He has eight points in his last five games, and he looks great alongside Nazem Kadri.  At 3.8k its pretty hard to not justify playing him in lineups with his results.  His shot volume is better than some guys 2k or 3k more than him.  Ill have a lot of Leivo in my lineups as a one off and I don’t care if he will be chalky.  The Rangers are a tough team but the price and shot volume still justifies the play.

DEFENSEMAN

Roman Josi – NSH vs COL – $6,000

Josi has found his offensive game and he has looked great.  He has ten points in his last ten games and he is riding  a two game point streak.  His shot volume has been insane over the last four games, averaging five shots on net per game and also two blocks.  Josi also plays on the top power play unit and he has been logging about 25 minutes a game.  Josi is my top defender tonight.  If you are looking to save some salary tonight you could also look to Ryan Ellis who has been playing solid lately too and he sees time on the second power play unit and should go super low owned.

Duncan Keith – CHI vs ARI – $5,500

Keith logs massive minutes for the Blackhawks and he has blocking more shots lately which only makes his floor higher.  He plays on the top power play unit and the Blackhawks have been funneling the power play through him lately.  When they get to the extra man advantage they will use Keith as the quarterback and keep Panarin on the left side and Kane on the right as that is their strong stick side for one timers.  Keith is usually a pass first guy but he isn’t afraid to shoot the puck if he has a lane.  He should have a lot of lanes tonight against the Coyotes, and Keith is in a good spot tonight.

Johnny Boychuck – NYI vs MON – $4,900

Boychuck makes for an interesting play tonight as he has six points in his last ten games, but he is also a good shot blocker.  Boychuck has been averaging just about four SHOCKS (shots & blocks) and he should have his hands full tonight taking on the Canadians.  I’m expecting a lot of rubber to come his way as he should match up with the top Pacioretty line tonight.

GOALIES

Carey Price – MON vs NYI – $8,100

Price has been pretty inconsistent this year and that’s not normal.   He looked solid last game against the Rangers and tonight he gets to play at home where he has been pretty solid with a 17-703 record sporting a 2.19GAA and a .928 Save %.  his inconsistency has lowered his price tag and with a night like tonight where you have a couple chalky goalies, you could get price at a ridiculously lower ownership.  Price should see plenty of rubber to justify his tag tonight, and if he can turn enough away to get the win, he could have a nice night.

Corey Crawford – CHI vs ARI – $8,400

I will take Crawford over Rinne at home any day of the week especially when they are priced right next to each other.  Not saying that Rinne is a bad play by any means I think he does great, but Crawford at home is usually a monster.  Crawford has a 2.26GAA and a .926 Save % at the Madhouse and tonight the only question is will he see enough shots?  Well I’m not really worried about the shot volume so much tonight because if I am playing him, I’m playing him for his shutout upside.  The win should be no problem tonight but I want a shutout, and they are easy to come by.
