NHL Power Plays 2/18/17
Kicking off the weekend we had a little 3 game slate to warm up, and tonight we get a nice eight game slate. The DFS sites have laid out some massive tournaments this weekend due to the NBA being on All-star break. Now is a great time to play NHL DFS because there are a lot of casual players looking to play DFS and NHL is the only option. There is only one team playing on a back to back tonight and that is the Florida Panthers. For our casual ViceSquad members that are looking to indulge on the NHL slate, I highly recommend checking out our FanVice University videos. Our own Steve Bauer a.k.a Homercles did a great presentation on how to approach and research slates for hockey. The purpose of this article is to bring you some plays that I think can help you take down that big GPP tonight. I can’t stress enough that you need to check and get confirmation on your goalies, there can be last minute changes or scratches but if you are a premium you are in good hands as we keep the NHL slack channel updated. Another great source is the beat writers on Twitter, I created a list on Twitter @Votts_DFS of pretty much every beat writer for the NHL and you can subscribe to that list. Now on to the plays for tonight, good luck!
If you have any questions at all, you can reach out to me on our premium Slack channel or on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

BOLD = Back to Back
Nazem Kadri – $6,000
Kadri has been playing solid two way hockey lately, he has ten points in his last ten games and he has multiple points in two games straight now. The Leafs will be without one of their top players Mitch Marner, so they will switch lines up a tad and put Josh Leivo alongside Kadri who makes for a nice mini stack. Kadri’s shot volume has been solid and consistent over the last five with at least three shots in each game. The Senators are not a great defensive team, and with Toronto’s fire power there should be plenty of shots and goals to go around. Austin Matthews is in a great spot tonight as well but I think they will be higher owned, leaving the Kadri line a solid GPP play.
Jeff Carter – LAK vs FLA – $7,400
Carter came back from the bye week with a goal and seven shots on net. He is one goal away from Sidney Crosby in leading the league in scoring, and he looks to take advantage of a Panthers team that is playing on the hind end of a road back to back tonight. The kings have the second best puck possession numbers with a 53.8 CF% after adjustment per Corsica.hockey. The kings are the second highest team in scoring chances per 60 minutes on the slate tonight. Florida is usually a team that plays strong possession wise and they try to limit shots, but playing on a back to back they will have their work cut out for them.
Logan Couture – SJ @ ARI – $6,500
Couture has had a roller coaster year and has changed line mates constantly. He has meshed well with Patrick Marleau recently and has brought solid production to that second line for the Sharks. Couture also gets you exposure to Joe Pavelski on the top power play unit, which is a great place to attack the Coyotes, who own the 26th penalty kill with a 77.1% kill rate. You can stack Patrick Marleau with couture as they play on even strength lines and the top power play together. This pairing should go lower owned than a Pavelski stack tonight.
Austin Matthews – TOR vs OTT – $7,300
The rookie finds himself sitting fourth in the league in goals, and he is fond of playing against the senators. In the three times these teams have squared off this year Matthews has five points with four of them being goals, and there has been an average total goals of 6.6 per game. Tonight should be a fast paced game with a lot of chances and opportunities, as Toronto loves pushing the pace and they shoot the puck a ton. Ottawa is a middle of the road team and they have weakness on the defense you want exposure to this game tonight, and I’m leaning with Matthews.
Charley Coyle – MIN vs NSH – $5,600
Coyle makes for an interesting play tonight against the Predators, who on the road have given up more goals than they would like with a 2.93 GAA. Coyle is playing alongside Zach Parise and they both play on the top power play which is a plus, but I like them tonight because they will get the depth matchups with last change. Minnesota uses the Koivu line as their shut down line leaving Stall line to take care of the second lines. Nashville is also giving up over 31 shots on goal per game, and with the Wild’s firepower they should be able to light the lamp a couple times.
Jonathan Toews– CHI vs EDM – $5,900
The Blackhawks come into tonight Red hot winning five games in a row, and a lot of it has to do with their second line finally catching a groove. Toews had a horrible stretch where he was snake bit and couldn’t buy a break, but he has been in fire with 14 points in his last ten games. He has multiple points in two of his last three games now. The matchup isn’t beautiful as he will match up with the Connor McDavid line, but since the Oilers moved Leon Draisaitl to the second line they aren’t as dangerous and Jordan Eberle just seems to not mesh with McDavid. Hockey players are streaky, and I’m riding with Toews tonight as I think he will carry way less ownership than the Patrick Kane line.
Joe Pavelski – SJ @ ARI – $7,400
Pavelski takes the chalk tonight against the Coyotes for right reasoning as Arizona is just not a good team in any sense. The Coyotes play better at home, but they are still giving up 2.82 goals against per game and they are also giving up the third most shots on net per game. Arizona also sports the league’s 26th penalty kill with a 77.1% kill rate. Arizona also has the league’s worst possession numbers with a 45.5 CF%. The Sharks should be all over the Coyotes tonight and Pavelski is your best bet. You can mini stack him up with Brent Burns or even get a little crazy and throw jumbo Joe Thornton in with it.
Patrick Kane – CHI vs EDM – $7,600
Kaner is riding a five game point streak and he has multiple points in three of them games, like I said earlier the Blackhawks are clicking on all cylinders right now and I’m riding them. The place I want to pick on the Oilers is on the power play, Edmonton has the 21st ranked penalty kill with a 79.5% kill rate. Patrick Kane has four power play points in his last ten games, if he gets the opportunity, he can be lethal.
Josh Leivo – TOR vs OTT – $3,300
With Mitch Marner sidelined with an injury Leivo gets an opportunity, and he has made the best of it with two multi point games in a row now and he has had five shots on goal in each of those two. That my friend is a value play. He will be playing alongside Nazem Kadri again tonight in a top six pivot role, and he should see plenty of opportunities to pay his cheap salary off. With the pace of tonight’s game there will be plenty of shots to go around, and even if Leivo can keep his shot volume up he’s well worth the price, add in a point and your way ahead of the game. Leivo is a great value tonight.
Mike Hoffman – OTT @ TOR – $5,800
Hoffman had a five game point drought but he ended it last game with an assist against the Devils. Hoffman has a lot of talent and he is one of the Sens best offensive players. His shot volume has risen recently with ten shots on net in the last two games, and he could be a good play tonight against the Leafs. Toronto likes to play fast but they also make a lot of mistakes, which result in opportunities for the opposition. The Leafs are giving up 32 shots per game at home which is the fifth most in the league, and since the All-Star break they have had a horrible penalty kill with just a 73.9% kill rate, which ranks second to last. Target Senators power play lines and you can stack Hoffman with Kyle Turris as they play on even strength and power play together and you can even throw in Erik Karlsson.
Nikita Kucherov – TB @ DAL – $6,900
Precursor, If Tyler Johnson comes back from injury; I like Kucherov even more tonight. The Lightning has dealt with injury all season and with Steven Stamkos going down, Kucherov is left to carry the team. Picking on Dallas’s special teams has been a successful endeavor this year as they have the league’s worst penalty kill with a 73.7% kill rate. The Stars are also giving up the third most scoring chances against per 60 minutes after adjustment, per Corsica.hockey they are giving up 9.06 SCA/60. I haven’t recommended any Bolts in a while, but tonight’s as good of night as any.
Adrian Kempe – LA vs FLA – $2,800
Kempne is the dart punt dijour for the night. He is playing on the top line for the Kings alongside Anze Kopitar and Tyler Toffoli and he is seeing semi decent ice time, last game he registered 15.2 minutes of ice time and he had two shots. At Kempne’s price he doesn’t need to do much, he is going to see a fair share of opportunities playing with two great talents. The Panthers are on a back to back tonight so fatigue could possibly play a role tonight, and if Kempne can get a couple shots and even a point, he will pay his price tag off handsome.
Brent Burns – SJ @ ARI – $8,500
Burns is an absolute monster, I know he is expensive but you have to realize he is pretty much a fourth offensive player. Burns has 12 points in his last ten games and he logs massive ice time, he does it all for the Sharks. Burns is leading the league in shots on goal per game with an average of just about four per game, he’ll two games ago he had an astounding 11 shots on net! His upside is massive every night and tonight is just a beautiful spot against the Coyotes. Arizona is giving up just shy of 34 shots on goal, and they are giving up 3.14 goals per game. Not to mention where Burns thrives, the Coyotes penalty kill is a lackluster 77.1%.
Oscar Klefbom – EDM @ CHI – $5,100
I’m a big believer that a defense should be able to block shots along with producing offense as it only raises a guy’s floor. Klefbom is a steady producer of both averaging 4.5 SHOCKS (shots & blocks). Blocks are the same value as a shot but they don’t carry the upside of a goal or an assist. Chicago’s penalty kill has gotten better but they are still in the bottom five in the league with a 76.8% kill rate, and Klefbom is playing on the top power play for the Oilers. The Blackhawks also give up a lot of high dangerous scoring chances, with an average of 8.06 SCA/60.
Alexander Edler – VAN vs CGY – $3,900
Edler saves you some much needed salary tonight as we need to fit in a couple studs. Edler is logging big minutes for the Canucks with an average of over 24 minutes per game, and he averages 3.7 SHOCKS (shots & blocks) per game. Edler also plays on the top power play. Calgary takes a ton of penalties; they have been shorthanded the most times in the league. Edler will find a couple opportunities tonight, and if he can manage himself a point tonight he will pay off nicely. It’s all about opportunity cost.
GOALIES – CHECK CONFIRMATION!
Corey Crawford – CHI vs EDM – $7,900
People might shy away from Crow tonight because the last time these teams met he gave up five goals in a 5-0 routing. But I like Crawford a lot tonight at home being well rested. Crawford is 11-4-3 at the Mad House on Madison this year and he has a 2.27GAA with a .927 save %. The Hawks have been playing great hockey, and with the Oilers giving up a lot of scoring chances I think Crawford gets enough offense to carry the victory.
Ryan Miller – VAN vs CGY – $7,300
Miller makes for an extremely interesting GPP play tonight with has low salary. Miller has owned the Flames this year with a 2-0 record stopping 69 of 71 shots for a .972 save %. Miller should have no shortage of rubber to fend off tonight, and if he can get enough offense to carry the mishaps, he could make for a great play.
