NHL Power Plays 2/16/17
Tonight we got a solid eight game slate that will have a couple matchups that stand out. With the NBA All-Star break here, you can expect people to be playing NHL as it’s the only sport to play dfs this weekend. That means that some of the games could get softer and we should take every advantage we can get. Cash games get enticing right about now, and when you play NHL cash games you are looking for higher Vegas totals and implieds, consistent shooting volume from your player, and good matchups. But I’m here to give you a couple players for GPP games, and there are a couple nice matchups tonight that we can capitalize on. There are two teams playing on a back to back, they are the Blues and the Flyers. Let’s dig into the slate and see if we can find you someone to take down that big tourney. Good luck!

BOLD = Back to Back
Evgeni Malkin – PIT vs WPG – $7,700
Malkin came back last game after a seven game injury layoff and he picked up right where he left off with a goal and an assist. Malkin is playing on the second line for the Penguins and he is getting the better matchups at home. He also plays on the top power play unit so you can get some exposure to Sidney Crosby. He is skating without restrictions and he has a good spot tonight against the Jets. Winnipeg is taking 3.5 penalties per game, and against the Penguins that could be disastrous. The Jets goaltending has been lackluster this year and they are giving up 3.23 goals against per game which is the sixth worst in the league on the road. Stacking Malkin with Patrick Hornqvist is a great idea as they play on even strength lines and the power play together. On a game that has a six O/U you want some exposure to this game tonight.
Jeff Carter – LA vs ARI – $7,300
Carter is the heart of the Kings team, and he has been playing phenomenal this year. Carter has 14 points in his last ten games and four of the games have been multi point efforts. Carter’s line changed a little bit, but before they moved Tyler Toffoli off and put Dustin Brown on his line, they were the second most dominant possession line in the league as they carry a Corsi of 62.63 CF%. The Kings will get last change tonight and they will try to stay away from Oliver Ekman-Larsson so they should have plus matchups all night. Arizona is just a bad hockey team defensively, they are bottom five in every advanced stat relevant to dfs. The Coyotes are also the team that gives up the most scoring chances per 60 on the entire slate, giving up 10.94 SCA/60. I don’t see any way that the Kings don’t put a handful on the scoreboard tonight and I want that Carter line stacked with Tanner Pearson. You could also roll out Anze Kopitar who makes for a great play tonight also, and he is now paired up with Tyler Toffoli.
Jack Eichel – BUF vs COL – $7,200
Eichel is a shooting machine, he leads all forwards in the league averaging just barely under four shots on net per game. He has a ton of talent and he finds himself in a cherry spot tonight. With the Sabres getting last change tonight, the O’reilly line will be the shutdown line going up against the top line for the Avalanche leaving the Eichel line to either match up with the Duchene line or even the depth lines which is a great matchup for Eichel. Colorado is the second worst team in the league with possession numbers, they have a horrid corsi rating of 46.98 CF%. Not to mention the Avs are the fourth most penalized team on the road and they are also horrible at killing penalties with a 76% kill rate, and the Sabres have the best power play in the league.. Gimme all the Sabres power play tonight!
Leon Draisaitl – EDM vs PHI – $6,000
If you followed my article on Tuesday you were rewarded with a three point game from Draisaitl. He was in a little bit of a slump but broke out last game and granted it was against the Coyotes, but he looked great. A good indication that someone is getting unlucky rather than playing bad is their shot volume, Draisaitl has been shooting the puck consistently over the past four games, and that should continue tonight against the Flyers. Philadelphia is playing on the hind end of a back to back and there could be a little fatigue issues, and if a team is fatigued they tend to play a little sloppy and take penalties which then result in goals. Draisaitl plays on the top power play unit and you can also get exposure to Connor McDavid on the power play.
Patrick Berglund – STL vs VAN – $4,440
Berglund saves you some nice salary tonight and he makes for a great mini stack with Jaden Schwartz. Berglund has six points in his last six games, and he has been logging solid minutes on the second line. You also get some power play exposure with Schwartz and Vladimir Tarasenko as he plays on the top power play unit. Vancouver is dealing with injuries to two of their better players and they are lacking any kind of depth. The Canucks are giving up over three goals per game on the road and they are also giving up just shy of 33 shots on net per game. St Louis should be able to put a couple goals on the scoreboard tonight and I like Berglund for a value play.
Patric Hornqvist – PIT vs WPG – $6,200
Hornqvist is a big body player that loves to make the front of the net his home and teams have an extremely tough time getting him to move. With Hornqvist playing so close to the net he gets a lot of opportunities to get tip ins, one timers, and juicy rebounds as evidence of his 17 shots on net in his last three games. Winnipeg is ranked 24th in goals against and they take a lot of penalties, and Horqvist plays on the top power play where he should see plenty of chances tonight.
Kyle Okposo – BUF vs COL – $5,400
Okposo is playing on the top line with Ryan O’reilly and he is riding a seven game point streak, and I think he makes it eight tonight. Okposo also plays on that lethal power play unit for the Sabres and Colorado is going to have their hands full tonight. The Avalanche are a siv defensively, their depth is not existent. The avalanche are also horrible on the penalty kill with a 74.2% kill rate on the road. Target the Avalanche any way you would like tonight, but ill be playing the top power play unit guys.
Tanner Pearson – LA vs ARI – $5,500
Pearson ended a five game drought last game with a goal and two assists. He looks to take that momentum into tonight’s game against the Coyotes, and he couldn’t get much of a better spot. Arizona is ranked 29th in goals against, 27th in shots against, 30th in scoring chances allowed, and 27th in penalty kill. You can’t really get much of a better spot to employ some kings here. Stacking Pearson up with Jeff Carter Is a great play.
Phil Kessel – PIT vs WPG – $6,500
Kessel is trucking along with a three game point streak and he really is playing solid hockey. Kessel likes playing at PPG Paint Arena as he has 33 points in 29 games. He is averaging just a little over 18 minutes of ice time but he also gets power play minutes on the top line where he is 12th in the league with 3:41 of pp time. You also get exposure to the elite snipers Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin on that power play unit. Averaging just over three shots per game Kessel makes a great play tonight against the Jets who like to take penalties.
Jaden Schwartz – STL vs VAN – $4,800
Schwartz is riding a three game point streak himself and he sits in a good spot tonight against the Canucks. Like I said earlier, the Canucks are dealing with injury and they are leaning on their old timers to carry them through the diversity. Schwartz has four points in his last three games and you can get exposre to Vladimir Tarasenko on the power play. With the Canucks giving up over three goals per game and a mediocre penalty kill, I’m looking to target them with the power play for more ice time exposure. The Blues have too much firepower for the Canucks and they should be able to light the lamp enough tonight.
Kris Letang – PIT vs WPG – $6,300
Letang is riding a two game point streak and he has seven points in his last ten games now. He is back on the top power play unit and logging big minutes. His shot volume has been solid averaging over four shots per game over the last five. Pittsburghs offense is potent and the Jets are going to have a hard time slowing them down. Letang makes for a great play tonight.
Rasmus Ristolainen – BUF vs COL – $5,900
Risto loves to let the cannon loose and he has a great spot to do it tonight against the Avs. He’s riding a two game point streak and he has been averaging about 3 shots per game. I think that will be the floor tonight given the Avs are so bad. I love the Sabres power play tonight.
Ryan Suter – MIN vs DAL – $5,100
With Matt Dumba out Ryan Suter has been logging massive minutes, like 30 minutes a game. He usually plays the whole power play when the Wild go on the extra man advantage, and that leads to a lot of opportunities. Suter has been snake bit as he has now gone ten games without a point, which is hard to believe. His shot volume has been up for the last couple games, so he may be able to get out of his funk tonight against the stars who are are giving up 3.75 goals per game, which is the most in the league. The Stars are also the worst penalty kill team in the league on the road with a horrid 71.2% kill rate.
Drew Doughty – LA vs ARI – $5,600
Doughty logs massive minutes for the Kings and he also plays on the top power play. He has ten points over his last ten games, and that’s with his shot volume being lower than normal. Arizona is a get right game for players when they get to play them because they are just a bad team. The kings will be all over the Coyotes tonight and Doughty sits in a nice spot. If you want to save a little salary you can also look at Jake Muzzin – $4,500 as he also plays on the top power play unit.
Jake Allen – STL vs VAN – $8,100
Allen has been the definition of inconsistent but he has been great for three games in a row now and he gets a nice matchup tonight. Vancouver is 26th in scoring, they don’t get many dangerous scoring chances and the Blues have played pretty good shut down defense. Not to mention the blues offense has too much fire power for the Canucks. I know it sounds crazy but I like Allen a lot tonight.
Robin Lehner – BUF vs COL – $8,200
Lehner has been inconsistent 6-9-3 record but he has a 2.38 GAA and a .928 save%. Colorado only really has one potent line and if they can shut them down, and get enough offense I think Lehner sees enough volume to have a good night. Like I said earlier I love the Sabres offense tonight.
