NHL Power Plays 1/5/17

Thursday slates are usually massive slates, but tonight we get a solid seven game slate.  This is a pretty tough slate to break down today as a lot of the matchups are very close.  We also get to witness the Blue Jackets try to tie the record for the longest winning streak in NHL history.  The Red Wings are the only team that is playing on a back to back tonight so rest isn’t a real issue.  I have had a lot of questions from our members about guys that might be late scratched or just not in lineups at all.  The best way to find out scratches and such is my Twitter list.  It is imperative that we stay connected with the beat writers, and I have created a list with all the beat writers in the NHL.  If you subscribe to the list you can then click on the list and it will show you just the tweets from them members.  Lets take a look at tonight’s slate and see if we can find you a couple plays to take down that big GPP for you.  Good luck!

Back end of a back to back

Jeff Carter – LA vs DET – $6,900

Carter has been on a mission lately with nine points in his last seven games and three of them  have been multiple points.  The Red Wings are not a great puck possession team and the Kings are one of the best. Detroit also sits in bottom 10 for goals against on average, and they are giving up north of 30 shots on net per game.  The Kings haven’t been super consistent this year as they deal with injuries, but Carter has been great shouldering the load.

Patrice Bergeron – BOS vs EDM – $6,000

Bergeron has a lackluster start to the year but is starting to come back to normal.  His shot volume has been rising and he has been averaging just short of four shots on net per game in his last ten.  He’s got two points in his last three games, and tonight he sits in a good spot to grab another one.  Edmonton has tendencies to be leaky on defense and playing against the Bruins that’s not going to cut it.  Boston is the strongest puck possession team in the league, and the top line is where im looking tonight with Bergeron and David Pastrnak – $7,500.

Sam Reinhart – BUF vs CHI – $5,000

I usually don’t like to target teams against the Blackhawks unless it’s a depth match up that gets power play exposure, and that’s where Reinhart sits tonight.  Toews is a great shut down defender, and he should be matched up with the Eichel top line trying to shut them down.  Leaving Reinhart to match up with the Kane line which isn’t a defensive juggernaut.  Reinhart also gets to play on the top line for the Sabres power play unit and the Hawks have had a really tough time keeping the puck out of their net short handed.  The Blackhawks have also lost five out of their last six games but they will be getting healthy as Hossa comes back tonight, but I still think Reinhart is a good play.

Tuevo Teravainen – CAR vs STL – $4,500

Tuevo has been riding a nice little five game point streak and he is carving his way as a decent facilitator, and his shot volume has also been impressive to see.  St. Louis is known to be a tough team to play against and a team that’s usually solid on defense, but the stats show that’s not the case.  The blues are 22nd in goals against on average giving up 2.89 goals against per game, and their goaltending has been shaky.  Carolina could be sneaky.

Patrick Kane – CHI vs BUF – $7,700

Kaner went through a dry spell for a month but is starting to turn it around.  He has nine points in his last ten games, but his shot volume is still high enough that I like him tonight.  Buffalo is giving up the fifth most shots on net per game averaging 32.4 shots against.  The Sabres penalty kill is also the worst in the league with a low 74.1% kill rate and they are giving up just over three power plays per game.  Giving Kane and the Hawks three power plays tonight could be disastrous, and ill have some Hawks tonight.

Nick Foligno – CLS vs WSH – $6,000

Foligno is riding six game point streak and he is playing some great hockey right now.  He’s got ten points in his last six games.  The most noticeable thing about Foligno is that he has 18 shots on net in his last three games, that’s an average of six shots on net per game!  The matchup may not be the best tonight, but with the Jackets riding their winning streak I think Foligno does everything he can to keep it going.  Foligno also has four power play points in his last six games.

Nikita Kucherov – TB vs NSH – $7,100

Since Kucherov came back from injury he has played four games,  in those four games he has eight points.  You could say he is healthy and is seeing the ice very well and he is shooting the puck over four times per game.  Nashville is a tough team to play but on the road they are a weaker team.  The preds are giving up 3.11 goals against and just shy of 32 shots on net per game.  Look for Kucherov to continue his streak tonight.

Frank Vatrano – BOS vs EDM – $3,800

Vatrano is starting to get a little more run with added ice time and hes seeing the second power play time also.  He has been shooting the puck about twice per game, and at his price tag that’s what we want to see.  In his six game he’s played so far he has four points also.  Vatrano should see the depth matchups and he should have plenty of chances tonight.

Spencer Abbott – CHI vs BUF – $3,200 (FD – $3,000)
Abbott was called up when the Hawks sent Tyler Motte back down to Rockford.  Spencer has 21 points in his 30 games for Rockford.  He will be playing alongside Jonathan Toews and Marian Hossa, as Hossa himself is coming back from injury and is a much needed piece for the Hawks.  If Abbott can get a couple shots on net, which is highly likely playing alongside two elite players, he should pay his salary off no problem.

Jordan Schroeder – MIN vs SJ – $3,300

Schroder has four points in his seven games played this year and three of them have been on the road.  He will be playing along Eric Staal and Zach Parise.  This a gpp punt that can save you money, and should not be played in cash.  Make sure he is in the lineup also as they might scratch him.

Victor Hedman – TB vs NSH – $5,900

Hedman has been playing out of his mind lately with 16 points in his last ten games.  He also has six multi point games in the last ten also.  Hedman is now tied for 3rd in the league for points alongside Patrick Kane and Phil Kessel.  Yeah your getting a very nice price break on a great play here.  Hedman logs massive ice time and he is the quarterback of the top power play unit.

Torey Krug – BOS vs EDM – $5,300

Krug had an awful start to the year but has been playing solid lately.  He is looked upon on the power play and he logs big minutes.  Krug has eight points in his last ten games, and he is also the fourth in defenseman with 116 shots on goal this year.  Edmonton’s penalty kill is sub par with a 81.5% kill rate.  I’m expecting Boston to put a couple on the Oilers tonight and Krug should get a piece of the action.

Andrej Sekera – EDM vs BOS – $4,400

Sekera has four points in his last five games, and he is averaging about two blocked shots per game.  Sekera also sees time on the top power play unit, where you can get some cheap exposure to the elite Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

Dimitri Orlov – WSH vs CLS – $4,300

Orlov has eight points in his last ten games, and he is logging solid ice time too.  It also helps that he is seeing time on the second power play unit.  He also isn’t afraid to block shots, and tonight against the Jackets he will have plenty of rubber to block.

Trevor Van Riemsdyk – CHI vs BUF – $3,300

TVR makes for a decent punt tonight against the Sabres as he has been playing solid minutes and he has been shooting the puck consistently.  The Sabres penalty kill is also putrid and Van Riemsdyk gets to play on the second unit.  You could do a lot worse than TVR tonight.

Corey Crawford – CHI vs BUF – $8,100

Crawford has only won one game since returning from injury, but a lot of that has to do with the injuries the Hawks have dealt with.  The Sabres are only averaging 2.19 goals per game, which is ranked 27th in the league, but they are also averaging about 30 shots on net, which isn’t bad for Crawford tonight. Crawford has been pretty solid on home ice with 1.99GAA and a .938 save %.  The Hawks should have plenty of support tonight to get Crow the W.
