NHL Power Plays 12/31/16

Its New Years Eve Vicesquad!  There are two games that are early and I will be covering the late games.  If you need any help or have questions on the early slate you know where to find me.  We got a nice eight game slate tonight to bring in the New Year.  There are a couple teams playing on back to backs, and there are a couple nice matchups we can try to exploit tonight. Let’s see if we can bring you a couple plays to get your Bankroll big for 2017.  As usual, follow my Twitter list of NHL beat writers for up to the minute information regarding scratches, goalie confirmations, and other news.  I have pretty much every beat writer there is in the list, and it’s essential that we stay close to the news in DFS.  Have a good night and  party SAFE!  Good luck!

Schedule for tonight

San Jose Sharks

Carolina Hurricanes*

Vancouver Canucks*

*Third Game in four nights also

Connor McDavid – EDM vs VAN – $8,100

Mcjesus is leading the league along with Sidney Crosby for points with 42 on the year.  He’s a special kid and has an immense amount of talent.  McDavid has a great matchup tonight against the Canucks who are playing on the tail end of a back to back.  Vancouver’s penalty kill has been awful in the month of December as they rank 27th with a low 71.1% kill rate.  Look for McDavid to take advantage of the extra man attack against a tired Canucks team.

Tyler Seguin – DAL vs FLA – $7,800

Seguin and the the Stars have found some offense and they take on the Panthers tonight who have lost six of their last eight games, mean a while Dallas has won five of their last seven.  This could be a good spot for low ownership on Seguin and his mates.  Seguin has five points in his last three games and is rolling a theee game point streak and I like him tonight again like I did Thursday.

Mikael Backlund – CGY vs ARI – $5,400

Backlund has been playing some great hockey lately as the Flames have won six out of nine games now.  Backlund has contributed with seven points in his last three games.  He’s playing on the second power play unit and his shot volume has been consistent with three shots on net per game in his last five.  Also the Flames have had the best power play unit in December with capitalizing on 33.3%  of their opportunities. With a plus matchup against the Coyotes, Backlund can save you some cap space with good upside.

Brian Little –  WPG vs NYI – $5,000

Little Is riding a three game point streak and he has seven points in his last eight games.  He draws a solid matchup at home tonight against the Islanders who are a horrible puck possession team.  The Isles are giving up the fifth most goals in the league allowing 3.38 goals per game.  Their penalty kill is also in the bottom five.  Little should stay away from the Tavares line much of the night and get plus matchups most of the night.  Little is playing solid hockey and I like a stack with Blake Wheeler – $6,300.

Mark Letestu – EDM vs VAN – $4,100

Letestu makes for a good play tonight if you can’t find the salary to fit in Connor McDavid.  He’s going to get the depth matchups and should be able to have moderate success.  Letestu also gets you exposure to McDavid by playing in the top power play unit with him, save some salary and get your Letestu on.

Nikita Kucherov – TB vs CAR – $6,900

Kucherov picked up right where he left off coming back from injury with three points in those two games.  Carolina is a solid team but they are playing in a back to back and their third game in four nights, which could lead to sloppy play and result in some goals.  The triplets line of Kucherov- Tyler Johnson- Andrej Palat could be a nice sneaky stack tonight, they have great upside.

Matthew Tkachuck – CGY vs ARI – $4,800

Tkachuck has been red hit lately with six points in his last five games.  The only person we would really like to avoid tonight in is game is Oliver Ekman-Larsson and he should have his hands full with the top line of the Flames.  Calgary’s second line can be sneaky good tonight, and I’ll have plenty.  Arizona gives up tons of shot volume and Tkachuck should see ample amounts of opportunity.

Ondrej Palat – TB vs CAR – $4,800

Palat like his line mate Kucherov above  likes playing against the Canes as he averages .90 real points per game.  This spot is a sneaky spot that I think could be somewhat lower owned tonight, and given their recent success I want some of these Lightning players.

Mats Zuccarello – NYR vs COL – $6,000

Zuccarello has been playing great hockey lately with five points in his last seven.  Targeting Colorado has been a successful endeavor as they are extremely leaky on defense.  The Aves are giving up the most goals per game in the league, and their penalty kill is bottom five.  This should be a firing squad tonight and I want some Rangers.

Nikolaj Ehlers – WPG vs NYI – $5,300

Ehlers is fun to watch, the kid has lightning speed and he’s a very shifty player.  Ehlers has eight points in his last ten games, and he’s been shooting the puck a lot which is great for dfs.  The Isles are a great target tonight as they give up over 33 shots on goal per game and their penalty kill is weak, they are bottom ten in the league.  Look for rubber to fly in is game.

Victor Hedman – TB vs CAR – $5,600

Hedman has stepped his game up with the injuries and now that the team is getting healthy he should be a steady producer.  Hedman has 12 points in his last ten games, and tonight he has a good shot at another point.  Carolina isn’t usually a team to target against but playing on a back to back and third game in four nights, and Tampa Bays offense has been clicking, this is a good spot tonight.

Dougie Hamilton – CGY vs ARI – $5,500

Hamilton has found his offensive game and has been playing some great hockey.  He’s got nine points in his last ten games, and he doesn’t mind blocking shots.  He sees solid ice time and playing against the Coyotes is always a good night.  If you can Fit Mark Giordano – $5,600 he is also a good play as he matches up with the second power play unit and the other Flames I have mentioned earlier.

Ryan McDonagh – NYR vs COL – $5,200

Mcdonagh didn’t let us down Thursday as he had assist and a couple shots on net.  That should be the minimum for him tonight, as Colorado is giving up loads of shots on net and their power play is weak.  Mcdonagh is logging big minutes and he is facilitating the power play on the point also.  The Rangers offense will show up big tonight.

John Klingberg – DAL vs FLA – $5,000

Dallas’s offense has been clicking and Klingberg has found some life also.  Klingberg has had nine shots in the past three games and he’s been logging good minutes of ice time.  He is also manning the point on the top power play unit. I haven’t used Klingberg much this year but  Florida has been in disarray lately, and with Dallas surging, now is the time to roll Klingberg.

Nick Holden – NYR @ COL – $3,500

Don’t look now but Holden has eight points in his last ten games.  He makes for a great value play tonight if you can’t fit Mcdonagh in.  He has been averaging about two shots on net and he is a good defensive passer, which gives him some assist upside.  He also mans the point on the second power play unit.

Cam Talbot – EDM vs VAN – $8,100

Talbot is the biggest favorite tonight so he will be chalky.  Vancouver is playing a back to back and their third game in four nights, so fatigue should also play a little role.  Talbot has been decent at home with 2.39GAA and a .921 save %

Annti Niemi- DAL vs FLA – $7,800

Niemi has been great on home ice this year with a record of 7-2-2 and 1.95GAA and a .936 save %.  Florida has been bad lately losing six of their last eight games, and Niemi being at home and the Stars offense producing well lately I love me some Niemi tonight.  He should see plenty of shots and if he can pull the win he will have a great night.
