NHL Power Plays 12/29/16
The first full slate back from holiday break is a mega slate with twelve games on tap. There are a lot of great matchups that we should take advantage of tonight, to get us in the top tier of our GPP’s. Let’s see if we can find you some value or even the studs that can bring you to the top of the leaderboard. A couple teams are playing on back to back games tonight, but I’m not making it a point to avoid or target them because they did just come off of a break. Keep an eye out for any line changes, key scratches, or even players that are being called up from farm teams. You can follow my Twitter list for all the beat writers that pretty much covers every single team in the league, its essential to be informed when you play DFS. Good luck Vicesquad!

TEAMS ON BACK TO BACK
Toronto Maple leafs
Tampa Bay Lightning
Prices are DK specific
Tyler Seguin – DAL vs COL – $7,600
With the year that Dallas is having, if I told you Seguin was tenth in the league in points with 34 would you believe me? Seguin has averaged just about four shots on net per game, and he has multi point upside any time he takes the ice. Colorado has been atrocious this year, giving up the most goals per game, and the sixth most shots on net per game. Their penalty kill is also putrid with a grim 78.7% kill rate. I’m trying to find ways to get Seguin in a lot of lineups tonight.
Derek Stepan – NYR vs ARI – $6,600
Stepan should be chalky tonight but that for great reason. He has been playing great hockey and has a beautiful matchup tonight against the Yotes. Arizona is at the bottom of almost every stat meaningful in dfs, and the Rangers should be able to light the lamp multiple times tonight. Stepan has a four game point streak working and two games in a row with multiple points. look for him to continue his streak tonight.
Sam Gagner – CBJ vs WPG – $5,300
Remember using Gagner as a value punt? Well, he still cheap enough to love. He’s playing on the best top power play unit in the league and the Jets are the second most penalized team in the league with 3.5 short handed opportunities a game, that spells trouble for the Jets tonight. Not only do they take a lot of penalties, they are also horrible at killing them too! The Jets play a little better hockey at home but don’t overthink this game tonight. I forgot to mention, Gagner has seven power play points in his last ten games. Sign me up.
Tyler Johnson – TB vs TOR – $5,200
With the bolts getting a little healthier, they reunited the triplets line (Johnson – Kucherov – Palat) last night and it erupted for six points. The line created tons of opportunities and had a ton of chances to do even more. Johnson had two goals and four shots on net. Toronto gives up a lot of shots and they should also have their backup netminder Antoine Bibeau between the pipes, which will be his first NHL game playing on the road.
Alex Ovechkin – WSH vs NJ – $8,100
Ovechkin has 19 points in his 17 home games this year compared to seven points in his 16 away games, them splits are real. He is shooting just over four shots on net per game. The Devils will be without Taylor Hall tonight and that hurts the Devils a lot. In December alone, New Jersey is giving up 3.7 goals per game which is the second worst in the league and they are giving up the most shots on net per game in the month of December. Ovechkin should have plenty of opportunities tonight, and playing at home, he has multi point upside.
Ryan Spooner – BOS vs BUF – $4,300
Spooner is playing some great hockey recently with four points in his last three games, and 11 shots on net. Hes playing top six minutes and he also plays on the top power play unit with the Bruins. Buffalo’s penalty kill is the worst in the league with a horrid 73.8% kill rate. At $4,300 Spooner is a steal.
Charlie Coyle – MIN vs NYI – $5,800
Coyle has been producing in all facets of the game lately, with 11 points in his last seven games. He’s getting the depth matchups on the third line but he also get the top power play minutes and he’s also not afraid to block a couple shots either. He has a great matchup tonight against the Islanders, who are a the worst possession team outside of the Coyotes. The Islanders are also giving up north of three goals per game, and Coyle is a great play tonight.
Brett Ritchie – DAL vs COL – $3,700
Ritchie makes for a fun punt play tonight against the Avs. He isn’t a point monster but at his price point he doesn’t need to be. Ritchie is averaging almost three shots on net per game, and he is sitting seventh in the league with an individual Corsi/60 of 19.47. Ritchie is playing on the second line and also the second power play unit, and against the Avalanche he should have plenty of opportunities. Colorado is giving up just shy of four goals per game in December and they are also allowing the third most shots on net. Ritchie makes for a great value play tonight and you can even stack him up with Radek Faksa – $4,000.
Chris Kreider – NYR vs ARI – $6,100
Kreider has four points in his last two games and he also has 11 shots on net. If he can keep that shot volume up tonight against the Coyotes like I think he should, he should be in for a huge night. The Rangers should be all over the Yotes tonight, and I’m looking for stacks that correlate and the top power play unit is a great place to start. The pucks should be coming early and often in this game.
Scott Hartnell – CBJ vs WPG – $4,100
Hartnell saves you some nice cap space tonight with some good upside. He has been playing some great hockey lately with two multi point games in his last three. He has also plays on the second power play unit, and with the Jets taking so many penalties and their bad kill, it could be a nice night for Scotty. Hartnell also has great history vs the Jets, in the 33 games he has played the Jets, he’s averaged .88 points per game. At $4,100 ill take them odds.
Victor Hedman – TB vs TOR – $5,500
Hedman is logging monster minutes on the point for the Bolts and he has 12 points in his last seven games. With Kucherov back in the lineup, Tampa Bay should be able to produce on the offensive end and Hedman also pair up with the triplets line on the top power play unit.
Dougie Hamilton – CGY vs ANH – $5,500
Hamilton is ranked fourth in the NHL for defenseman shots on goal, and he has been playing some solid hockey lately with three points in his last two games and six blocks. The ducks have struggled on the defensive end in December, allowing 3.62 goals per game which is the third worst in the league. The Ducks penalty kill has also taken a hit and they were bottom ten. Hamilton should have a good amount of rubber to block and if he can keep his shot volume up, he should have a good night.
Ryan McDonagh – NYR vs ARI – $5,000
McDonagh has been white hot lately with five points in his last two games. He’s logging big minutes on the point for the Rangers and also quarterbacks the top power play unit. There isn’t much more I can say that I haven’t said about the Coyotes, just slot him in.
Torey Krug – BOS vs BUF – $5,000
Krug had a snail’s pace beginning of the season, but has picked it up nicely and he now ranks third in defenseman shots on goal. Krug is riding a three game point streak and he has five points in them three. Krug mans the point for the top power play unit, and that’s where we want to attack Buffalo, as they have the worst penalty kill in the league.
Devin Dubnyk – MIN vs NYI – $8,300
Dubnyk won’t come cheap but for the top goaltender in the league and the most consistent, im paying up for him. He has a ridiculous 1.39GAA and a .947 Save % at home, and he should be a lock for the W tonight in my opinion. He should still see some rubber but it will be mostly low danger shots.
Mike Condon – OTT vs DET – $7,700
Condon has a good home record at 4-1-1 and he has played pretty solid with a 1.82GAA and a .937 save %. Detroit doesn’t score a bunch and Condon should be able to get enough offense tonight to get him the W at home.
Antti Raanta – NYR vs ARI – $8,100
Raanta will be chalky tonight against the Coyotes. Raanta has been great on the road this year with a 5-1-0 record and a 2.13GAA and a .934 save %. The Rangers should supply a ton of offense tonight, but you’re going to need shutout to help you win a gpp tonight, and that’s possible.
