NHL Power Plays –12/23/16
Happy Friday Vicesquad! We head into the holiday break with what will be a night of chaos. There is a massive 12 games on the slate for tonight. The NHL is jamming their games in because there is a four day break with no games schedule, what are we going to do with no NHL for four days??? I believe that this will be one of the highest scoring nights of the year with all the teams on back to back games, and the rest situations are pretty insane. We all know that when teams are tired, play gets sloppy and goals ensue. Not only the rest situation but some teams will have it mailed in tonight as they already think they are on break. I’ll break down the rest situation for you guys first and then try to get you a couple plays that can bring you a Christmas present early by binking that GPP. Good luck, and Merry Christmas!!

Third game in four nights *
Fourth game in six nights ±
Quick Note – New Jersey is also playing their fifth game in seven nights.
Sidney Crosby – PIT vs NJ – $8,500
Crosby has been the most consistent performer In the league this year, which is no surprise for one of the best Centers in the league. Crosby has a point in every game except one, In his last ten games and three of them have been multiple point nights. The Devils have been playing a ton of hockey lately and could be feeling fatigue tonight as they are playing their fifth game in seven nights. In December alone, the Devils are giving up the third most goals in the league, and they are also giving up the sixth most shots on net per game. Crosby loves to shoot when he is at home, and tonight could be a great night for Sid the Kid.
Alexander Barkov – FLA vs DET – $6,100
Barkov has been a consistent producer for a Panthers team struggling to find offense. He has 11 points in his last ten, and is riding a four game point streak right now. Barkov is a very talented kid with great offensive awareness, and he can facilitate. The Panthers matchup well against the Red Wings tonight, who are a poor possession team that’s in the bottom five of Corsi with a 47.6CF%. The red wings are also missing one of their top defensive players Mike Green, and their goaltender Jimmy Howard. I like Barkov to keep his streak going tonight.
Sean Monahan – CGY vs VAN – $6,100
Monahan gets a solid matchup tonight against the Canucks, and he should be able to stay away from the Sedin twins tonight too. Vancouver’s Penalty kill in December has been awful, they have the third worst kill in the league with a 68.8% kill rate. Monahan plays on even strength with Troy Brouwer and Kris Versteeg and they join Johnny Gaudreau on the top power play unit. Calgary is a pretty rested bunch compared to the Canucks who are on a back to back and playing their third in four nights and fourth in sixth. I think a Calgary stack would be super sneaky tonight.
Vinnie Hinostroza – CHI vs COL – $3,600
If your looking for some nice value with good upside, look no further than Vinny. Since Artem Anisimov went down with an injury, the Blackhawks move Jonathan Toews off the second line to the top line and Hinostroza has been moved to the second line for the Hawks. He is also getting the second unit power play time. Vinny has four points in his last three games, and has a nice matchup tonight against the Avalanche, who are giving the farm up.
Mark Letestu – EDM vs SJ – $4,100
Letestu is having himself a good year so far for his standards. His ice time has risen a ton, and it helps a lot that he plays on the top power play unit alongside Connor McDavid. Letestu has eight points in his last seven games, and he has been showing some good signs with his shot volume. The matchup isn’t ideal, but we need some value, and he brings a little bit of upside with the power play unit. He can save you some much needed salary tonight.
Artemi Panarin – CHI vs COL – $7,200
Panarin is riding a six game point streak, and playing some damn good hockey right now. The Hawks get a beautiful matchup tonight against the Avalanche. The Hawks line of Panarin, Patrick Kane – $7,800 and Jonathan Toews – $6,200 will be one of the most popular plays tonight, but that’s not stopping me by any means from using them. The Hawks should be all over the Aves tonight and this game could get out of hand. The last time these teams met Panarin had a goal, an assist, and 4 shots on net. Don’t overthink this spot. I don’t mind if you leave Toews out of the stack and roll someone like Brent Seabrook or Duncan Keith.
Joe Pavelski – SJ vs EDM – $7,300
Pavelski is averaging 4.2 shots on goal per game in December, and he’s coming off a multi point effort last game. He’s the go to man on the Sharks for scoring, and Edmonton is leaky on defense and they allow some sloppy goals. The Oilers are middle of the pack in goals allowed but in December their penalty kill has taken a huge hit. They are only killing 71.1% of their penalties, which ranks 27th.
Evander Kane – BUF vs NYI – $5,500
Kane was moved down to the third line for the Sabres, and playing on the second power play unit. That’s not a horrible thing as he is still managing almost 20 minutes of ice time per game. Being on the third line gives him more opportunity against the opposing depth lines, and it shows by him having six shots on net the past two games. One of them shots will sneak in soon enough. The Isles are a poor possession team and they lack depth. this could be a good spot for Kane.
Jonathan Drouin – TB vs WSH – $5,700
Another day another Drouin write up. This kid has picked the slack up since Stamkos and Kucherov have been injured and he’s making the best out of it. Drouin did it again last night with two more goals, giving him 13 points in his last ten games. His shot volume has been great, averaging about four shots per game. He’s been logging some solid ice time, and manning the point on the top power play unit. The matchup tonight is not the best, but when a guy is hot you gotta ride him.
Mitchell Marner – TOR vs ARI – $6,300
Marner has 18 of his 25 points in his 17 home games this year, you could say he likes playing at home. He has a great matchup tonight against the coyotes who are putrid on the defensive side. The coyotes have the worst CF% in the league and they give up the second most shots on net per game, and the Leafs take the most shots per game in the league. I will have stacks of all combinations tonight of the maple leafs, and Marner will be in a bunch of them.
Justin Schultz – PIT vs NJ – $5,100
Schultz continues to be underpriced in the industry without Kris Letang out with injury. Schultz is involved in every facet of the game, and he gets plenty of power play time on that lethal top unit. He has four power play points in his past six games. New Jersey is giving up scoring chances left and right and they are letting in over 3.5 goals against in each contest. Not to mention the fatigue factor setting in with all the games they have played lately. That’s a recipe for disaster when you play the penguins.
Jeff Petry – Mon vs CLS – 4,800
Petry has stepped up in a big way with Andrei Markov out and the Habs offense hobbled with injuries. Petry has five points in his last four game, but that’s not the only thing exciting. Petry has 12 shots in his last two games, and he is averaging a couple blocks per game. Tonight against Columbus Petry will have his hands full blocking shots, if he can get a point on top of all the blocks he will pay off easily.
Jake Gardiner – TOR vs ARI – $4,800
Gardiner is coming off a two assist night and find himself in a great spot again tonight against the Coyotes. He’s playing on the top power play unit and he has three power play points in the last five games. Arizona can be attacked in all facets of the game so a stack of Maple leafs sounds great.
Brett Pesce – CAR vs BOS – $3,400
Pesce is a nice cheap value play tonight on a night we need salary for the STUDS in good spots. Pesce is logging good minutes and he’s riding a two game point streak, and he’s also playing on the top power play unit. He blocks a lot of shots and can hit value off of that alone, but if he can get a point on top of blocking shots you should have a nice night going For you.
Roberto Luongo – FLA vs DET – $7,700
Bobby Lou should be starting but double check. He has played great against Detroit this year with a 2-0-0 record sporting a .99 GAA and . 953 save %. He’s are at play tonight in all formats.
Peter Budaj – LA vs DAL – $7,500
Budaj has a good opportunity to steal one here in Dallas. He has been better on the road this year and has a 1.92 GAA and a .929 save %. The Kings are a monster puck possession team and they have more depth than the Stars do, if they can slow Seguin and Benn down Budaj should have a great chance at the win here. Great gpp play.
