NHL Power Plays –12/22/16

With only two games left before the Holiday break we got a nice ten game slate tonight.  Four teams played last night and  of the four, the only one playing again tonight is the Flyers.  There’s some nice matchups tonight, and it could be a great scoring night.  So let’s see if we can find you a couple guys to take home the big prize in tonight’s GPPS.  Good luck!

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to ask me on our Premium Slack chat, or on Twitter @Votts_DFS.

Pricing used will be DraftKings unless otherwise noted.

Austin Matthews – TOR vs COL – DK $7,600 FD $6,800

Matthews gets a juicy matchup tonight against the struggling Avalanche.  Colorado is ranked dead last in goals against on average, giving up 3.16 goals per game.  The Aves are also the 25th ranked team out of 30 in shots against per game, giving up a hair over 32 per game. In his last game, Matthews had eight shots on net, and a goal.  This kid can shoot the puck and he can light the lamp multiple times, and tonight could be a great spot.  His price on FD is a great buy at just $6,800.

Bo Horvat – VAN vs WPG – $4,500

Horvat is rolling along lately, with five points in his last four games.  He has 11 points in his 17 home games this season. He’s logging some decent minutes on the third line, and the second power play unit.  The Jets are the second most penalized team and they are also horrible on the penalty kill with only a 76%.  Horvat makes for a great play tonight.

Derrick Brassard – OTT vs ANH – $5,100

Brassard has been playing some good hockey lately, with a goal in three games straight.  His shot volume has been great and that’s a promising sign.  The Senators are a hard team to stack because the lines are all jumbled, but if you want correlation with power play units then Brassard is your guy.  He plays on the top line with Zack Smith – $4,100 and also the second power play unit.  Anaheim has been giving up a lot of goals lately, in December they are giving up 3.82 goals against each game.  The Ducks have played a ton of games, so they might be tired.   Even though they have had a days rest, they are still playing their third game in four nights and their fourth game in six nights.

Brian Little – WPG vs VAN – $5,500

Little has been playing some solid hockey alongside Blake Wheeler – $6,600.  Little has four points in his last five games, and he is also playing on the second power play unit.  The Canucks have been a bad penalty kill team in December as they rank 28th in kills with a 67.9% kill rate.  The sedin’s should match up against the top line of the Jets, leaving little and wheeler to get more opportunities and chances, I like the second line tonight for the Jets.

Derek Ryan – CAR vs BUF – $4,300

Ryan has been playing some great hockey lately on the top line for the Canes.  He has ten points in his last ten games.  The matchup tonight isn’t screaming play all the Canes you can, but Buffalo’s penalty kill has been awful.  The Sabres are dead last in the league killing their penalties. In December alone, the Sabres have a 55% kill rate.  Think of that for a second real fast, that’s barely over half!  Buffalo has allowed nine goals on 20 penalties, yeah give me some of the power play guys from the Canes please.  The best part about Ryan is not only his upside, but he carries a low salary too.  You can stack him up with Jeff Skinner – $6,900 and Victor Rask – $5,900 or Brett Pesce – $3,400 and save a ton.

Zack Smith – OTT vs ANH – $4,100

Smith has been on fire with six points in his last three games moving to the top line for the Sens.  He’s has also averaged 17 minutes of ice time in them three games, and has a spot on the second power play unit.  As I said earlier about the Ducks, they have been giving a lot of goals up, and Smith saves you some nice salary tonight to pay up for the big studs.  He makes a great stack with Derrick Brassard.

Jonathan Drouin – TB vs STL – $5,800

Drouin has been playing out of his mind since the Bolts lost all their star players to injury.  He’s been carrying the load and has ten points in his last eight games and three multi point games in that span.  The Blues have been giving up the seventh most goals against in December and the Bolts are starting to get a little healthier, as they should have Palat back tonight. Drouin makes for a solid one off tonight.

Viktor Arvidsson – NSH vs LA – $6,100
Arvidsson has been the best predator player this year, as he has been proving his worth as a fourth round draft pick.   Arvidsson has nine points in his last ten games.  His ice time has risen as he proves himself, as he is now averaging about 18 minutes each game.  He’s also playing on the second power play unit.  Arvidsson has a 20.58 IC/60 and 2.25 pts/60, that’s among the leagues elite players.   The Kings have been a great possession team this year like the Preds, but at home I’ll take Arvidsson.

Jeff Petry – MON vs MIN – $4,800

Petry has been a monster lately with Andrei Markov out with a lower body injury.  Petry has five points in his last three games.  He got moved up to the top power play unit when Markov went out and he has took advantage of every second of it.  He’s been shooting the puck at and elite rate, with 14 shots on net in his last three games, and he also gets you a blocked shot or two.  Minnesota is not usually a team I search out to pick on but at $4,800 Petry makes for a great play.

Dustin Byfuglien – WPG vs VAN – $6,200

Byfuglien had a really slow start to the year but has since turned it up.  He ranks seventh in defenseman in points with 22, he also ranks fourth in shots on goal for defenseman, and he averages the most time on ice out of any defenseman.  The Canucks can give goals up, and their penalty kill is bad.  Byfuglien runs the second power play unit and the plays all move through him, he should get on the board tonight.

Justin Schultz – PIT vs CLS – $5,000

Schultz’s price tag is finally getting to the proper price, but he’s still a good play on that top power play unit for the Pens.  He keeps proving his worth and he is logging a lot of minutes in addition to being on that Lethal power play unit. Schultz has 14 points in his last ten games and he’s averaging about three shots on net per game, over the past couple. He also blocks a shot or two.  Columbus likes to shoot the puck so Schultz should have plenty of rubber to block tonight.

Jake Gardiner – TOR vs COL – $4,600

Gardiner was riding a five game point streak till last game, but he was sick so he only played about three quarters of his normal minutes.  He should be good to go tonight, and he has a beautiful matchup against the Aves.  Colorado is in the bottom five of every fantasy stat relevant and is a team we all should be picking on.  Gardiner QB’s the top power play unit, and he also contributes with blocked shots.

Zach Warenski – CLS vs PIT – $5,800

Warenski has been extremely quiet lately in the shot department, but he is still contributing with points.  He has four points in his last four games.  Pittsburgh is a great team and can score a lot of goals, but their penalty kill is near the bottom of the league.  The Jackets power play has been ridiculously good and this could be a get right spot for Warenski tonight.

Tonight’s slate is very interesting for goalies as I’m not extremely confident in any one goalie, so I can’t really give you the locks that I normally do, but I can tell you that I will have exposure to this guy:

Matt Murray – PIT vs CLS – $7,700

Murray has a tough task ahead of him tonight but he has been an elite goalie this year with 1.83GAA and a .943 save % at home.  He will get plenty of shots to save tonight and if the Pens can keep scoring like they have been, Murray should be in for a great night with the win.
