NHL Power Plays – 12/17/16

It’s been a good week with some solid slates, and that brings us to Saturday with an eight game slate.  There is some nice value plays that we will get into tonight also.  The objective of this article is to try to uncover the plays who can win you the Big GPP.  There are a lot of teams on back to back nights so I’ll point them out to you also.  Good luck Vicesquad!

Buffalo Sabres

Carolina Hurricanes

Tampa Bay Lightning

Pittsburgh Penguins

Tampa Bay Lightning

Evgeni Malkin- PIT vs TOR – $7,600

Malkin has been on a terror recently with 15 points in his last ten games.  The pens have been playing a lot of games recently as they are on a back to back and playing their third game in four nights, but it’s only giving me a mild concern.  The Leafs are a young team but they give a lot of chances up and they allow a lot of shots, and against the Penguins aye not going to be a good outcome.  If Fluery is in net tonight I don’t mind a full game stack as the leafs will get plenty of  opportunities themselves.  Toronto is giving up the fifth most shots on net per game and the Pens are giving up the third most shots on net.  There’s plenty of ways to get combinations of this game tonight, but I like Malkin a lot.

Connor McDavid- EDM vs TB – $8,500

McDavid might be under owned tonight with all the other Studs in such great spots, but he finds himself in a good spot also.  Tampa Bay having all their injuries, they are depending on young players to step up and we all see how that worked out last night against the Canucks.  McDavid is one of the most electrifying players in the league and he has multi point upside on every night as he  leads the leagues in points.  In December alone the Lighting are giving up the sixth most goals per game at 3.29 and their penalty kill is in the bottom ten in the league.  It could be a nice night for McDavid, especially if they are still missing all their top players.

Evgeny Kuznetsov – WSH vs MON – $5,700

Kuznetsov has been playing some great hockey lately, he’s got eight points in his last six games with a six game point streak rolling in the middle of Ovechkin and Justin Williams.  He doesn’t get to play on the top power play but he still see time on the second unit.  Montreal is also hobbled with injuries and their coach decided to make the top line super heavy, and their depth lines are below average.  Last night Carey Price gave up four goals and got yanked, and not all the goals were his fault but.  If the Habs keep their lines top heavy, the Caps will find a way to get the Kuznetsov line free and have a lot of opportunities.

Victor Rask – CAR vs BUF – $5,700

The Canes second line has been hot lately as it shows with Rask having a four game point streak with seven points!  Rask is a great facilitator and he doesn’t mind shooting the puck either, he has 12 shots in the last three games.  The second line is also stack worthy as they all play on the second power play unit, and against Buffalo that’s a great thing.  Buffalos penalty kill has been a tad better but they are still tied for dead last in killing penalties as they have a low 73.3% kill rate.  I love this stack tonight also.

Mike Fisher – NSH vs NYR – $4,900

Fisher loves playing at home in the Bridgestone Arena,  he has 13 of his 17 points at home, and that’s in 11 games.  He plays on the top power play unit also and makes for a solid value one off tonight.  The Rangers can score a ton, but their defense is pretty shaky beside Ryan Mcdonagh.  Nashvilles power play has been pretty successful and I could see fisher keeping his point streak going and he should go overlooked for the most part.

Mark Letestu – EDM vs TB – $4,100

Letestu is riding hot right now with seven points in his last eight games.  He isn’t playing in the top six but he does see time on the top power play unit. Anytime you can play with Connor McDavid it’s going to be a good situation for you with open ice and plenty of opportunity.  The Oilers are set to take on the lightning who have been decimated with  injuries and missing four key parts to their team.  The bolts just lost last night to the Canucks, who aren’t a good team by any means. Also Ben Bishop should be between the pipes as Andrei Vasilevsky played last night, and Bishop has been the worst of the two.

Vladimir Tarasenko – STL vs CHI -$7,900

Tarasenko has been a powerhouse lately with ten points in his last five games! He is also a Blackhawk killer, he loves to score on the Hawks.  The Hawks can limit chances on even strength and they will probably play the Toews line against him, but Tarasenko is pretty much matchup proof.  The biggest reason I like Tarasenko tonight is that the Hawks penalty kill is still atrocious and they remain in the cellar with Buffalo as they have only a 73.3% kill rate.

Jeff Skinner – CAR vs BUF – $6,500

Skinner has played some great hockey lately with six points in his last five games and has a three game point streak going.  He has been shooting at an enormous rate also, he has 20 shots on goal in his last three games! Now that’s a high floor.  Buffalo will try to limit him tonight but I still love that fact that Skinners line stays together on the power play, and against a buffalo team they should find success.

William Nylander – TOR vs PIT – $5,600

Nylander is rolling along on the third line with four points in as many games, playing alongside Austin Matthews – $7,400.  They also play together in the top power play unit and that’s where we want to attack the Pens tonight.  With the Penguins playing a bunch of games here recently, I think there will be plenty of power play chances for Toronto.  When teams get tired they start to play a little sloppy and tend to take penalties.  The Penguins own the fourth worst penalty kill in the league, sporting a 77.8% kill rate.  Like I said earlier, this game could make for a good game stack, but it could also be lopsided, and I’ll have shares of both.

Derek Ryan – CAR vs Buf – $3,800

This kid is the real deal, I’ve been touting him since his beginning and he has been producing for the Hurricanes.  He has ten point in his last ten games, and he is riding a five game point streak.  He gets to play alongside Victor Rask – $5,700 and Jeff Skinner – $6,500 on the second line and he also plays with them on the power play unit.  You can use Ryan as a one off or you can stack the line up, either way I like em both.  Buffalo is now tied with the Blackhawks for the worst penalty kill in the league with just a 73.3% kill rate  and the second line of the Canes has been productive.  Ryan Saves you that salary you need for the big studs tonight.

Cory Conacher – TB vs EDM – $2,500

Conacher has played in the league now for three games, and he scored last night.  With the Lightning having so many injuries, its giving guys prime opportunity to step up.  That’s exactly what Conacher is doing, he is playing on the top line for the lightning alongside Tyler Johnson – $5,600 and Erik Condra – $3,400 and he is also playing on the top power play unit.  At Conacher’s price tag he doesn’t need to do much to pay off his salary.  A block or two and a couple shots would be great.  He’s a great way to save salary tonight as long as the line stay the same and he gets power play exposure.

Justin Schultz – PIT vs TOR – $4,700

Schultz will be written up on my power plays article until he gets either priced accordingly, or he stops playing on the top power play unit when Letang returns.  He is simply too cheap playing on the monster offense of the Penguins, and he is also involved taking shots, and doesn’t mind blocking them either.  Schultz has four points in his last three games and is starting to log a bunch of minutes

Rasmussen Ristolainen – BUF vs CAR – 6,000

Ristolainen has been great for DFS, he has a five game point streak with nine points in those games! He is being involved in every facet of the game.  He is also logging massive minutes, about 27 per game, and gives us blocked shots to boot.  He’s red hot, and makes for a good play tonight also.

Jake Gardiner – TOR vs PIT – $4,400

Gardener has stepped his game up lately and it shows with his four game point streak.  He’s getting time on the top power play unit and he making the best of it, he’s averaging about three shots per game and he has had two blocks in each of his last two.  He should get plenty of rubber to block tonight and finds himself in a good spot.

Andrej Sekera – EDM vs TB – $4,800

Sekera got promoted to the top power play unit and although he hasn’t tallied a point in a couple games, he is getting opportunities and shooting the puck, last game he had five shots on net and two blocked shots.  The Lightning are dealing with a ton of injuries and are decimated, and their penalty kill shows it with a bottom ten penalty kill at 78.8%.

Brad Hunt – STL vs CHI – $3,400

Hunt has been a great value play lately.  He has been assigned the point alongside Kevin Shattenkirk on the second defensive pairing and the pair is also playing on the top power play unit.  Hunt has played four games this year and he has notched a point in every game so far.  The Blackhawks are pretty good at limiting chances on even strength, but their penalty kill is still the worst in the league with only a 73.3% kill rate.

Braden Holtby – WSH vs MON – $7,500

Holtby has been great recently he has won his last four starts with a 1.72 GAA and a .939 save %.  With Montreal dealing with injurie, if the Caps can find a way to limit that top heavy line, Holtby should be in line for a good night.

Cam Talbot – EDM vs TB – $7,600

Talbot has been decent at home with a 2.54 GAA and a .917 save %.  He should get enough offense tonight to secure the  win and there’s a possibility of a Shutout with this injury riddled Lightning team, it would be his first one though.
