NHL Power Plays 1/3/17

We bring in the New Year with the first seven game slate of the year.  There are a couple obvious spots to look at tonight for matchups. There is only one team playing on a back to back tonight, that is the New Jersey Devils.  The Devils are also playing their third game in four nights tonight.  Let’s dig in and see if we can find you a couple guys that can take down a GPP, so you can start 2017 with a bang.

If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact me on our premium Slack chat, or on Twitter Votts_DFS.

Back end of a back to back

Third game in four nights *

Austin Matthews – TOR vs WSH – $7,600

Matthews is one of the hottest players in the league right now.  He is leading the league in rookie scoring, and also ranks second in the league of all scoring.  Matthews has been on a terror with 12 points in his last ten games, and his last three games have been multiple points.  This kid is literally a star in the making, and he plays great hockey with his quickness and his offensive awareness and not to mention his laser shot.  Matthews has actually been playing better hockey on the road this year as he has double the points than he does at home.  The last time Matthews faced off against the Caps he lit the lamp, and im expecting a point tonight also.

Derek Stepan – NYR vs BUF – $6,800

Stepan has tuned his game up lately showing he doesn’t need to just score to be a good player.  He has seven points in his last four games, and he also plays on the top power play unit for the Rangers.  Buffalo can be attacked early and often on the power play as they are the worst team in the league with only a 73.9% penalty kill.  The Sabres are also giving up the fifth most shots on net per game, averaging 32.6 shots on net against.

Alexander Wennberg – CLS vs EDM – $5,600

Wennberg isn’t a player that puts a lot of pucks on net, but he is one of the league best facilitators right now.  He is averaging just shy of a point per game, and he only has 42 shots on net in 35 games.  Don’t let that deter you for DFS as he is a pass first guy and he always find the open man.  Columbus has been on a historical run and the top line of the Jackets is where I’ll look tonight as the Oilers can be leaky on defense.

Kevin Hayes – NYR vs BUF – $5,600

Hayes has been solid lately with five points in his last three games and he has been averaging a couple shots on net.  Hayes makes a good pivot off of Stepan tonight as the masses will gravitate to the top line.  You will probably get Hayes at lower ownership, and he should get a good matchup tonight as I believe he will match up with the Eichel line, which is poor defensively.  Buffalo’s penalty kill is also horrendous, and Hayes will get a couple chances on the extra man advantage.

Nick Foligno – CLS vs EDM – $6,000

Foligno has been playing some phenomenal hockey lately.  He has a five game point streak going and in those five games he has three multiple point games.  His shot volume has been way up as he has 13 shots on net in his last three games.  As Columbus keeps pouring pucks in the net, Folignos numbers will rise as he is a big key to the offense.  I’m trying to get Foligno in as many lus as I can tonight.

Alex Ovechkin – WSH vs TOR – $8,300

Ovechkin has been super inconsistent this year, but he still has his game where he tae sten shots on net.  Tonight is one of them nights, the Maple leafs are giving up north of 32 shots on net per game, and they are a young team that makes mistakes.  Ovechkin should be able to capitalize on them mistakes tonight and he should be able to find the score sheet.  Ovie is also starting to heat up as he has nine points in his last ten games, with three multiple point games.  As weird as it sounds, Ovechkin is reserved to GPP only for me until he can start producing at the elite level we all know he can.

Cam Atkinson – CLS vs EDM – $7,200

Atkinson has been one of the steadiest producers of the Jackets this year, he has points in eight of his last ten games and four of them have been multiple point games.  If you havent noticed the Jackets by now, you must have been living under a rock.  The guys I have mentioned in this article will be all bunched together as I stack them up tonight.

Jeff Skinner – CAR vs NJ – $6,500

Skinner has had a little bit of a dry spell ash he has going pointless in four straight now.  But the cure for that is playing the Devils tonight on home ice.  In December alone the Devils gave up the second most goals per game, giving up 3.67 goals against.  Carolina is a great puck possession team, and the Devils are ranked 27th of 30 in Corsi with a 47 CF%.  Expect Skinner to get his shot totals back up tonight and there should be goals. I love the stack of Skinner – Victor Rask – Derrick Ryan.

Leon Draisaitl – EDM vs CLS – $6,100

Draisaitl is quietly putting together a solid season.  He’s got 11 points in his last ten games, and makes for a great play because he gets the depth matchups on a nightly basis but he plays on the top power play unit, so you can get exposure to the elite Connor McDavid.  Columbus has been playing ridiculously good hockey lately, but the Oilers could sneak a couple in tonight.  Draisaitl has 12 shots on net in his past two games, and he should have a good shot volume tonight also, as it will be a fast paced game.

Sebastian Aho – CAR vs NJ – $4,500

Aho has turned his game up a notch lately with points in his last three games.  His shot volume has been extremely high as he has 15 SOG in his last three.  The Devils may have gotten Taylor Hall back, but they are still playing on a back to back and it’s their third game in four nights tonight.  I’m expecting Carolina to be all over the Devils, and Aho is a great place to start.

Victor Hedman – TB vs WPG – $5,600

Hedmans price is starting to creep up, but his production has been there to match it.  Hedman has 14 points in his last ten games, and five of them have been multiple points.  He logs huge minutes on the ice and he quarterbacks the top power play unit.  Winnipeg gives up the second most penalties in the league so Hedman should have ample amounts of time to tally a couple points tonight. He’s in a great spot tonight.

Nick Holden – NYR vs BUF – $3,700

Holden is no stranger to my write ups lately as he has been playing good hockey, and he is overlooked by the masses.  He has seven points in his last ten games, and he is seeing time on the second power play unit.  At $3,700 he is a superb value play tonight, where value is thin.  If he can block a couple shots and take a couple, he will pay off easily.  He makes for a great stack with Hayes & Vesey.

Ryan Mcdonagh – NYR vs BUF – $5,400

Mcdonagh will be chalk tonight but deservedly so, he has been playing lights out.  He has a four game point streak rolling and seven points in those four.  McDonagh quarterbacks the top power play unit, and with Buffalo’s horrible kill Mcdonagh should be able to keep his point streak rolling tonight.

Seth Jones – CLS vs EDM – $5,000

Jones is starting to become the offensive defenseman that the Preds wanted him to be before they traded him.  Jone shas seven points in his last ten games and his shot volume has been good as he has avg 2.7 shots on goal in the last ten.  He plays the half wall great and he also blocks shots.  Jones also plays on the second power play unit, and logs about 23 minutes a game.

Cam Ward – CAR vs NJ – $7,700

Ward has been great at home this year as he is 9-2-1 with 1.91 GAA and he has a .931 save %.  He should be able to get the W tonight and see enough shot volume to be relevant.  The Devils are facing fatigue with their back to back and third game in four nights.  I like me some Ward tonight, and that’s a scary thing.

Sergei Bobrovsky – CLS vs EDM – $8,100

Bobrovsky has been ridiculously good and has been a huge part of the Jackets winning 12 in a row, and he should be able to keep this streak going tonight. Last time these teams faced off he stopped 33 of 34 shots and got the W.  That’s a good reference for tonight.

Andrei Vasilevskiy – TB vs WPG – $8,00

Vasilevskiy has been the better goalie of the Lightning this year and has played great at home with a 7-1-2 record and 2.25 GAA and a .925 save %.  Vasilevskiy will see plenty of rubber tonight, and if his offense can produce enough goals he should make for a solid play tonight.
