NHL Power Plays – 12/15/16
We got a nice eight game slate tonight, with only one team playing on a back to back because of the small slate yesterday. The Bruins are the only team that played last night, they are also playing their third game in four nights. Let’s dig into this slate and see if we can find you a couple guys to take down that gpp tonight.
If you have any questions, feel free to contact me on our Premium Slack Chat or on Twitter @Votts_DFS.
Austin Matthews – TOR vs ARI – $7,200
Arizona is giving up a hair over 35 shots per game this year and that’s by far the worst in the NHL. They are also giving up north of three goals per contest also. Matthews is in a good spot tonight as he should be able to get a lot of looks and open ice as the depth lines of the Coyotes are bad on defense. Matthews is a little streaky of a player and he has multi point upside tonight, which makes him a good tournament play. If you’re looking for some correlation you can pair Matthews up with William Nylander – $5,300, or full stack him with Jake Gardiner – $4,200, as they all play on the top power play unit together.
Artem Anisimov – CHI vs NYI – $6,500
Anisimov has four point in his last four games, and centers one of the most electric lines in the NHL. The top line of Anisimov – Artimei Panerin – Patrick Kane can light the lamp on any moments notice. Tonight the Hawks get a nice matchup against the Islanders, who are a pretty poor possession team. The Isles are second to last in Corsi with a low 45.8CF% which spells trouble for them with the Hawks in town. The Blackhawks are finally getting healthy and they get their Captain back Jonathan Toews. im expecting Toews and the top line to blanket the Tavares line whenever they have a chance to because they don’t get last change. Leaving Anisimov and the lethal second line to have a lot of opportunities tonight. The Hawks ownership this year has been surprisingly low, and hopefully they are again tonight for our sake. gimme some Hawks.
Jeff Carter – LA vs DET – $6,800
Carter is hot right now with five points in his last four games, and leads the Kings with 24 points. Detroit is giving up just over 30 shots on net per game, which is bottom ten in the league. Detroit is a pretty poor possession team with a Corsi rating 47.5CF%. Which makes for a great matchup for Carter and the Kings who are second in the league with a Corsi rating of 53.9CF%. Im expecting the Kings to be all over the wings tonight, and I’m rolling the hot hand in Carter. You could also stack Carter with Tyler Toffoli – $5,600 as they both play on even strength and power play unit together.
Ryan Johansen – NSH vs MIN – $6,000
Johansen is rolling along on the year and he has four points in his last four games. The Preds play better hockey at home as they are 10-4 now at the Bridgestone Arena. The matchup tonight isn’t the juiciest on paper, but they are a better possession team than the Wild, and playing at home is a good plus. I like the top line for the predators tonight (Johansen – Neal – Forsberg) and they all play on the top power play unit also. If you are looking for depth lines you can look to the third line (Wilson – Fisher – Arvidsson). More on them later though.
Alexander Barkov – FLA vs WPG – $6,100
The Panthers are having a rough go at it since firing their head coach, responding with a 2-3-3 record since. They also have only scored two or more in just two of their last twelve games, but Barkov is still playing well and shooting the puck a ton. He’s got five points in his last five games and seems to be the bright spot on the team. The Jets are the second most penalized team in the league, and they are also bottom five in the penalty kill with a low 77.6% kill rate. Barkov playing on the top power play unit makes sense tonight.
Vladimir Tarasenko – STL vs NJ – $7,900
Tarasenko is an elite sniper that can load the back of the net up. He’s got seven points in his last four games! He gets to take on the Devils tonight who have been giving goals up at will. In the month of December alone the Devils are giving up an average of four goals per game. Now that may be a small sample but its very alarming. Tarasenko is in a good spot tonight and ill have a bunch of him where I can fit him in. You can also stack him up with Robby Fabbri – $4,700 and Kevin Shattenkirk – $5,300 as they play on the second line and power play unit together.
William Nylander – TOR vs ARI – $5,300
Nylander is coming off of a game with multiple points, giving him three points in as many games. He has a beautiful matchup tonight against the Coyotes, who are playing better lately but still poor defensively. They are dead last in Corsi with just a 44.8CF%. The Coyotes are giving up the third most goals at 3.13 goals against per game, and they are giving up the most shots on net per game at 35.5. The matchup couldn’t get any better for the Leafs, and I’m expecting them to put up a bunch tonight.
Artemi Panerin – CHI vs NYI – $6,700
Panerin’s price had crept down to $6,700 tonight and he’s in a great spot against the Islanders tonight. He has three points in his last two games, and tonight he should have a bunch of open looks. The Islanders are a poor possession team, they are giving up three goals per game and just over 35 shots on net per game in December. As I said earlier, the Toews line will try to match up with the Tavares line as much as they can and that should leave the second line for the Hawks to have a multitude of chances and opportunities tonight.
Chris Kreider – NYR vs DAL – $6,100
Finding the production on the Rangers isn’t easy, as the scoring comes from all over. Injuries to the Rangers isn’t helping anything either, but we want to attack the Stars with the power play and Kreider fits the bill. He has seven points in his last seven games, and rolls on the top power play unit. You could also look to save a little by playing Mats Zuccarello – $5,900 as he plays alongside Kredier on the opposite wing for both the even strength and power play. Dallas is the third most penalized team in the league and their kill is also the third worst in the league with only a 76.6% kill rate.
Mike Fisher – NSH vs MIN – $4,900
Fisher loves to play at home in the Bridgestone Arena, as he has 12 points in 11 games this year and he is coming off of a multi point game also. The matchup is not a great tonight but he saves you some salary tonight and he also plays on the top power play unit. Fisher also skates on the third line for the Preds and that line has been dynamic lately with Viktor Arvidsson – $6,200 having a four game point streak going. Nashville has been very good at home this year with a 10-4 record and tonight I’m expecting a couple goals out of them.
Ryan Hartman – CHI vs NYI – $3,600
Hartman saves you some nice salary tonight and has some good upside. He is playing on the top line for the Hawks alongside Jonathan Toews – $6,200 and Marian Hossa – $6,000. He is also playing on the second power play unit and is shooting the puck on a regular basis. At his price you can’t ask for much more.
Trevor Lewis – LA vs DET – $3,600
Lewis has flourished lately as he was moved to the top line for the kings alongside Anze Kopitar – $5,600 and Marian Gaborik – $5,400 as he now has five points in his last five games. He is also playing alongside Gaborik on the second power play unit. You could also stack him up with Alec Martinez – $5,000 who plays on the power play with them.
Jake Gardiner – TOR vs ARI – $4,200
Gardiner is riding a three game point streak and hopes to keep it alive tonight against the Coyotes. He is playing about 22 minutes per game and he is also playing on the top power play unit with some young snipers. Hes got a great matchup tonight against the Coyotes and he also doesn’t break your bank.
Ryan McDonagh – NYR vs DAL – $5,100
(Check to make sure he plays)
McDonagh traveled with the team and should be able to give it a go. He is working on a three game point streak giving him 17 total on the year. Dallas is the third most penalized team in the league and they have third worst kill with only a 76.6% kill rate. McDonagh is logging big minutes and he mans the top power play unit and also doesn’t mind blocking shots.
Aaron Ekblad – FLA vs WPG – $4,800
Ekblad is averaging about 3.3 shots on net and a blocked shot per game, which gives you a solid floor. The reason I like him tonight is because he is playing the Jets. Winnipeg is the second most penalized team in the league with 118 times short handed, and they are the fifth worst team in the league killing penalties with just a 77.6% kill rate. Ekblad mans the top power play unit for the Panthers and he should shoot the puck a lot tonight, giving him some great upside. If you want to save a couple hundred bucks you can look to Keith Yandle – $4,500 also.
Kevin Shattenkirk – STL vs NJ – $5,300
Shattenkirk busted out of a five game pointless slump with a goal and an assist against the Preds last game. I’m hoping he can continue to tally points tonight against a Devils team who has been giving goals up at will. Shattenkirk man’s the top power play unit and he has a cannon from the point. He also is averaging about three shots on net per game for the past five games.
Scott Darling – CHI vs NYI – $7,900
Darling has been nothing short of brilliant lately. He has a 2.02 goals against with a .933 save %. He should be able to steal one from the Isle tonight and he should get to see a little bit of rubber. Having Toews back helps him in zone defense also by limiting some of the high dangerous chances.
Jake Allen – STL vs NJ – $7,900
Allen has been great at home this year with a 10-0-2 record despite being shaky at times. He has a great history against the Devils also and he should face a decent amount of shots tonight and I think he can take the Win. He has a 1.79 goals against and a .932 save % at home.
