NHL Power Plays 1/19/17

Happy Thursday Vicesquad! Tonight we have eight games on the slate, and it’s going to be an interesting night.  There are a couple matchups that are extremely favorable so the ownership should be something we need to consider tonight.  There is also a game that has opened with a 6.5 pt total, that is extremely rare in NHL.  There are two teams that are playing a back to back tonight and they are both playing their third game in four nights, they are the Arizona Coyotes and the San Jose Sharks.  The site have put together a couple nice sized tournaments tonight, so let’s see if we can dissect tonight’s slate and get you a play or two so you can take down that big GPP tonight.  Good luck!

Austin Matthews – TOR vs NYR – $7,500

Matthews has been playing phenomenal hockey and he doesn’t look like a rookie out there with the big boys.  He sits third in the league with 22 goals on the year.  Tonight’s game is a massive 6.5 total and it should be a shootout.  Toronto has the best pace in the league and the Rangers are going to do everything they can to keep up as they are now finally getting healthy.  Matthews is a big bodied player that can use his size to get where he wants to go, but he also has finesse and quickness to move around players.  This game is going to be interesting and I’m playing combinations of the Leafs line tonight but Matthews is my favorite play.

Mikko Koivu – MIN vs ARI – $5,400

Koivu has had the opportunity to take the burden of pressure off of him now and just play hockey.  Now that the Wild are healthy and they have Erik Staal rolling and playing the position he should have been playing his whole career.  Koivu has been quietly putting together a nice season and he has points in seven of his last ten games.  The masses are going to be all over the top line of Parise – Staal – Coyle.  The Koivu line makes for a good pivot as they are cheaper and they all see the second units power play except Jason Zucker, but he has been playing good hockey of late also so you can roll him with the stack.  The Coyotes are giving up the  most SCF/60  in the league at 10.36 and although they have been good lately they still have the fifth worst penalty kill in the league stopping only 77.7% of their short handed opportunities. Expect the Wild to be all over the Yotes tonight, and “Their will be goals.”

Ryan Kesler – ANH vs COL – $6,900

Kesler gets a beautiful matchup tonight against the Avalanche, who are just a bad hockey team all around.  The Avs are operating at a –1.50 goal differential which is atrocious, meaning they allow 1.5 more goals then they score per game.  Colorado is also giving up 70.27 FD points per game to centers of opposing teams, that’s the worst in the league.  Kesler usually plays a shutdown role but he can light the lamp at any time.  In the last ten games he is averaging just about three shots on net per game, and he doesn’t mind blocking a shot or two.  Kesler lit the lamp last game against the Avs and he has another shot tonight.

Mika Zibanejad – NYR @ TOR – $6,000

Zibanejad came back from injury in a big way with two goals and seven shots on net.  He stepped right back in with his old linemates Rick Nash and Pavel Buchnevich.  The Zibanejad line should go lower owned than the Stepan line tonight I would think, and most likely they should be able to avoid the Kadri line, and facing up with the Matthews line.  This game is going to have a lot of offense and I think you are going to need a combo from this game to win anything tonight, and the Zibanejad line is mostly where ill be looking.  Also to not is that Zibanejad is at a discount price right now as he is coming back from injury, and like I said on Thursday, He wouldn’t be playing if he wasn’t healthy.

Radek Faksa – DAL @ NYI – $3,900

Faksa has strung together a nice little run with nine points in his last seven games, and he is riding a four game point streak.  He doesn’t get big power play time but he is seeing solid ice time at even strength for his price.  The Islanders are giving up 10.16 SCA/60 which is the second worst in the league, and they are also giving up over 32 shots on net per game.  The only matchup I would have any hesitation about would be going up against the Tavares line, and Faksa wont be doing that tonight.  He should get the juicy depth matchups and he will have a couple opportunities to capitalize tonight.

All the top players from the games above are all in play tonight, I’m going to try to do something a little different today and hit on a couple guys I think could be low owned and in great spots, or some nice value plays.

Pavel Buchnevich – NYR vs TOR – $4,200

The DFS sites have not adjusted Buchnevich’s price and that’s a mistake.  Since Buchnevich has came back he has five points in three games.  He is seeing upwards of 18 minutes of ice time and also second unit power play duties.  He is a great facilitator and he has a knack for finding the open man.  He is playing at more than a point per game, granted it’s a small sample of 13 games, but he too cheap.  The Rangers are going to need his offense tonight in a game that sports the highest total of the year so far.

Mike Hoffman – OTT @ CLS – $5,500

Hoffman has caught fire in his last four games with four goals and two assists, and its not like he has had cake matchups either.  He is seeing the open ice and is taking advantage with every opportunity.  Hoffman is averaging just over three shots per game recently and he had five last game against the Blues.  Tonight’s matchup is tough going up against the mighty Blue jackets, but the recent shot volume that Hoffman is putting up is what I like the most.

Mikael Granlund – MIN vs ARI – $5,500

Granlund is riding a nice little four game point streak and he has 11 points in his last ten games, with four of them multiple point nights.  Like I said earlier, I think the second line of the Wild should go under owned tonight compared to the top line, and they should also see better matchups.  The Wild top line should have to deal with Oliver Ekman-Larsson most of the night.  Granlund is a little shifty pest and he has a solid shot.  If he can keep his shot volume up, which the Yotes are giving up over 30 per game, Granlund should be able to continue his streak tonight.

Anders Lee – NYI vs DAL – $4,900

It’s going to be interesting to see how the Islanders react to their coach Jack Capuano getting fired mid season.  Lee gets to play on the top line getting you some exposure to the stud John Tavares, and they also play on the top power play unit together.  Lee has three points in his last couple games and I think tonight he should be able to continue that streak against the Stars.  Dallas is giving goals up in droves, they have given up the second most goal in the league this year so far.  The Stars have the second worst penalty kill in the NHL with a 74% kill rate.  In the eight games that the Stars have played in January, they have only stopped 59% of their penalties.  That is absolutely horrible.  Playing a couple Islanders on the top power play seems like a nice way to get away from the masses that will be on teams like the Rangers and Leafs.  Lee makes for  nice stack with Tavares – Josh Bailey – Nick Leddy.

Ryan McDonagh – NYR @ TOR – $5,300

McDonagh is clipping along with ten points in his last ten games.  McDonagh is the cornerstone of the Rangers defense, and he is leaned heavily on.  Toronto is giving up the third most fantasy points in the league to defenseman.  With no plus minus stats to account for on dfs sites, we want to get exposure to this massive 6.5 total and McDonagh makes sense.  A stat line that has an assist or two, 4 shots on net, and 4 blocks is not out of the realm tonight.

Cam Fowler – ANH vs COL – $5,400

Fowler is in a massive drought as he only has one point in his last ten games, but he gets a spot to get right tonight against the horrible Avalanche.  Fowler does more than just score for the Ducks.  He plays about 26 minutes a night on the blue line, he blocks a couple shots per game, and his shot volume has been pretty solid with 15 shots in his last five games.  Fowler also plays on the top power play unit.  If you can’t get the salary for Fowler you can also look to Sammy Vatanen – $4,500.

Nick Leddy – NYI vs DAL – $4,400

We need to save some cap for the guys we really like in prime matchups and Leddy helps us do that.  Leddy is involved in a lot of the offense for the Isles as a defenseman. He has seven points in his last eight games and 16 blocks.  Leddy also quarterback’s the top power play, and that’s where we want to attack the Stars. He should have plenty of shots to block tonight against the likes of Seguin and Benn.  With the Stars penalty kill so bad it’s hard not to click on Leddy tonight.  If you need to save a couple hundred bucks you can also look to Johnny Boychuck – $4,200.

John Klingberg – DAL @ NYI – $4,800

Klingberg had a horrible start to the year but has since got it back on track with eight points in his last eight games.  He is logging big minutes on the blue line for the Stars and he is very involved in the offensive production.  Klingberg is a kid that has a knack for scoring goals and he also isn’t scared to block shots.  The Islanders just fired their coach of five years and I’m not sure how they are going to come out of the gates, but they have been a mediocre team at best and their penalty kill ranks in the bottom ten.

Nikita Zaitsev – TOR vs NYR – $3,800

Zaitsev is a great play tonight if you need to save salary.  He is playing solid minutes and he also plays on the second power play unit.  Zaitzev also blocks a couple shots per game.  If you have the salary to go up, I like Jake Gardiner a lot also.

Jared Spurgeon – MIN vs ARI – $4,800

Spurgeon has been playing solid defensive hockey lately and he has two power play points in his last four games.  you won’t see many games where he doesn’t record a blocked shot or a couple in fact.  Spurgeons shot volume has gone up recently and that’s a promising sign.  Arizona give up a ton of shots on net, and with Louis Domingue starting tonight it could be a long night for the Yotes.  If you want to get a defenseman from the top power play unit you can also look to Ryan Suter – $4,800, or save salary with Matt Dumba – $4,300.  Both are great plays tonight.

Devin Dubnyk – MIN vs ARI – $8,500

The Coyotes are averaging the second worst amount of goals per game with only 2.05 goals for.  Dubnyk should be in line for a win easily tonight at home and I’m not overthinking it.  Dubnyk is the best goaltender in the league this year with a 1.83GAA and a .930 save %.

John Gibson – ANH vs COL – $8,300

Gibson has been good at home with a 2.12GAA and a .930 save % in 19 games at home.  Colorado is horrible and I don’t see any way that Gibson doesn’t get the win tonight.  He should see enough shots on net as last time these teams squared off he only let in one goal on 34 shots.
