NHL Power Plays 1/14/17
Happy Saturday Vicesquad! We have a massive ten game slate on tap for tonight. There is a lot to digest tonight, as it should be a high scoring night. there are nine teams playing on a back to back and six teams are playing their third game in four nights. With the NHL mandating teams to have a bye week the schedule is condensed and that results in a lot of rest situations. when teams are tired they get sloppy and take penalties, resulting in higher scoring. There isn’t much value tonight so let’s see if we can find you that play that will take you over the top to win that GPP. Here are the power plays for Saturday night. Good luck!

BACK TO BACK
THIRD GAME IN FOUR NIGHTS*
Connor McDavid – EDM vs CGY – $8,100
McDavid really needs no introduction as he is one of the top players in the league and he has multi point upside every time he takes the ice. Tonight is no exception as he obviously loves playing the Flames, with three goals and three assists in two meetings this year. McDavid has averaged 22.5 minutes of ice time against the Flames also. Calgary is the single most penalized team in the league this year, and their penalty kill is better on the road they are still a sub par penalty killing team with a 81% kill rate.
Jeff Carter – LAK vs WPG – $7,100
Carter has been playing solid hockey even with his main man Tyler Tofolli being sidelined. Carter has six points in his last three games and two of them are multi point efforts. Playing alongside Tanner Pearson, that line has thrived offensively and tonight I see this line continuing their momentum. Winnipeg is the second most penalized team in the league and they have the fifth worst penalty kill in the league. That spells disaster when playing the Kings who are a great puck possession team with a Corsi rating of 53.5. I’m expecting the Kings to put a handful up tonight as they take on the Jets who are also on a back to back.
Eric Staal – MIN @ DAL – $6,500
Staal has been a man in a mission lately as he has at least one point in nine of his last ten games and totals out with 14 points in those ten. The place we want to attack Dallas is on the power play. In the five games Dallas has played this month they have only killed off 55.5% of their penalties, that’s not good. On the year they have a 74.5% kill rate, which is the second worst in the league.
Ryan Kesler – ANH @ ARI – $7,000
What would a write up be if we didn’t have players that are playing against the Coyotes? Arizona is always a great team to pick on with high motor and skilled players like Kesler. He should get the plus matchups tonight as now Ryan Getzlaf is back healthy and lined up with Corey Perry. Oliver Ekman-Larsson should be on the ice every time that top line gets on the ice, leaving Kesler with the big bump in matchup. I like Kesler as a mini stack or even three man involved with Jakob Silfverberg.
Derrick Brassard – OTT vs TOR – 4,900
Brassard is riding a mini hot streak with three points in his last couple games. That’s not the only thing I like about Brassard, but his shot volume has been consistent as he has had at least three shots on net in his last five games. Toronto is playing on the hind end of a back to back but they are young so it shouldn’t affect them totally but the Leafs have a tendency to make a mistake or two and the Send can capitalize on them. Ottawa is a very hard team to stack because their lines are completely jumbled up so I’m looking for a one off her or you can roll Kyle Turris with Erik Karlsson.
Joe Pavelski – SJ vs STL – $7,200
Pavelski is riding a nice little four game point streak with five points in that time. He makes for a great late night hammer tonight and he should go under owned. Like I said in Thursday’s write up, St. Louis has been absolutely putrid on the road this year giving goals up at will. People think they are still the defensive powerhouse that shuts lines down, well that’s not the case this year. The Blues are giving up 3.76 goals against per game on the road which is the worst in the league. Pavelski combined with Brent Burns could be a great late night hammer.
Cam Atkinson – CBJ @ FLA – $7,300
Finding the players on the Jackets that are going to be involved in the scoring has been tough lately, but I’m trying to get as many as I can tonight. Florida is playing an extremely tough stretch of games this week and it’s taking a toll on them, as evidence from last night when Jokinen double cross checked Tavares and got into a fight because of a bad penalty call. The awhile Florida team looked gassed and they were sloppy and making mistakes. I guess that’s exactly what happens when you are playing on a back to back, also their third game in four nights and their fourth game in six nights! The Panthers also gave up 42 shots last night, yes that’s right 42. This could be an ugly game for the Panthers tonight if the Jackets bring any of their offense. Also Luongo played last night so I would be amazed if he plays tonight.
Phil Kessel – PIT @ DET – $6,200
Kessel is. Lipping along at a point per game average, and he gets a solid matchup on the road tonight in Detroit. The Red Wings are giving up 2.65 goals against at home and they are allowing just shy of 30 shots on net. The last time these two teams met Kessel lit the lamp twice. I’m not saying he will do that again tonight, but it wouldn’t surprise me. He should get the plus matchup as the Wings will try to shut down the unstoppable Sidney Crosby, and Kessel also gets the top power play minutes. Factoring in the fact that the Penguins are scoring the most goals in the league per game, I like Kessel’s chances tonight.
Jeff Skinner – CAR vs NYI – $6,600
Sebastian Aho – CAR vs NYI – $4,800
Skinner has been electric the last two games with three points in each contest. I would imagine Skinner will be popular among the masses but for good reason, that’s why I also wrote Aho down. Aho has been firing the puck without concern lately and five shots on net is almost the norm for him. Both teams are playing on a back to back but the Isle had to travel. Score and venue adjusted, the Islanders are giving up 10.2 scoring chances for per game, that’s the second worst in the league to none other than the Arizona Coyotes. I’m thinking that the Skinner line will most likely end up trying to stay away from the Tavares line, but they will still match up with them occasionally. So going to the Aho line makes sense, and they have been pretty good offensively. Taking advantage of the power play lines is also a good idea as the Isles are bottom ten in penalty killing.
Tanner Pearson – LA vs STL – $5,200
Pearson is riding a nice little hot streak coming off a two goal game Thursday and he gets an opportunity to keep it going tonight against the Jets at home. Pearson has been steadily shooting the puck about three times per game and has gelled nicely with Jeff Carter since Tyler Tofolli has been out injured. Winnipeg is giving up the fifth most goals per game this year and they are also the second most penalized team in the league. Add in the fact that they are the fifth worst team on the penalty kill, the kings are in a great spot tonight.
Brent Burns – SJ vs STL – $8,200
I know it’s tough to swallow the price of a defenseman this high, but there is a reason he is expensive. You gotta look atBurns as an offensive player with massive upside. He has 14 points in his last ten games, he logs massive ice time and he is also a guy that shoots and blocks shots. He does it all. Louis has been wretched on the road this year and they have given up four goals before scoring one, two games in a row. If your looking for a sneaky late night hammer, get yourself some Brent Burns with Joe Pavelski.
Shea Weber – MON vs NYR – $5,800
Weber is logging massive ice time for the Habs and he is leaned heavily on the power play with his cannon of a shot. The Rangers have been awful on the penalty kill lately with a horrible 66,7% kill rate in January. Raanta should be in net tonight and he can be inconsistent, not to mention the Habs will get a key piece of offense back tonight with Alex Galchenyuk and Andrew Shaw getting healthy. I like targeting the top power play players tonight from Montreal.
Cam Fowler – ANH @ ARI – $5,400
Fowler has also been logging big minutes for the Ducks and plays a high usage role on the power play. Fowler has a nice shot and he could sneak one in tonight. The Coyotes are the worst team in the NHL in almost every stat, and Fowler sits in a good spot tonight for a point or even two. If you need to save some cap I don’t mind moving down a bit to Sammy Vatanen either.
Jake Muzzin – LA vs WPG – $4,300
Muzzin can save you a little cap tonight as we need as much as we can with all the stars in great spots. Muzzin has had an increase in ice time and he has six points in his last ten games, with a couple multi point nights. Muzzin also has contributed a good shot volume and he’s blocked a shot or two. He makes for a solid play against the Jets tonight.
Andrej Sekera – EDM vs CGY – $4,300
Sekera has continued his offensive play with a goal last game. He has averaged pretty solid minutes and he has ten shots on net in his last three games. Sekera is also seeing time in the top power play too so if you can’t afford Connor McDavid, you can get cheap exposure to him. Calgary’s penalty kill is sub par and they take a lot of penalties so Sekera should have a busy night.
John Gibson – Anh @ ARI – 8,100
Gibson makes for a solid cash play and I also like him in GPP’s. He should be the heavy favorite tonight against the Coyotes. Gibson has played great lately and he stands with a 2.34 GAA and a .920 save %. The ducks should get plenty of offense to down the YOTES tonight, who are playing on the hind end of a back to back and Mike Smith should be resting as they deploy the backup Louis Domingue.
Peter Budaj – LA vs WPG – $7,700
Budaj makes for a good GPP play tonight as he is a little inconsistent but he has a solid home record of 13-3-1 with a 2.31 GAA and a .901 save %. The offense has been clicking for the kings and they should get enough to help budaj take it home tonight, and he should face enough shots to be relevant even if he lets one in.
