NHL Power Plays 1/1/17

Happy New Year! Short slates can be a bit of a pain for everyone. The goal of this article is to highlight and summarize the potential plays so we can focus our salary cap resources on a specific set of players.

There are three games on Sunday so let’s get cracking on what happened last night then look forward to tonight. This will be fast.

What Went Wrong?

Sadly, if you thought Devan Dubnyk was safe, you would have been wrong. That sounds unfathomable but he gave up four goals in the big game versus Columbus. The amount of saves was far from ideal which led many that went all in on Dubnyk to be riddled with disgust. Even Carey Price gave up four goals but that was more expected against a talented Pittsburgh squad. It was the kind of night where stacks melted far too often. Winnipeg got throttled at home again, this time by the Islanders. The biggest issue was the fact that the 6:00 pm game was not on the main slate. That was an opportunity missed.

What Went Right?

Hey, there was some scoring at least! Colorado gave up six goals to the Rangers and the top line combined for seven points including the Chris Kreider hat trick. Tampa Bay had an easy home win over Carolina for a chance and Los Angeles held off San Jose at home. Tanner Pearson provided some scoring support for Jeff Carter with a goal and assist. Mikael Backlund scored again for Calgary as they tallied four times in the first then coasted to victory. Even Vancouver sneaked a win via the shootout which turned Markstrom into a contrarian winner. Let’s get into the plays real fast.

Quick Plays (DraftKings and FanDuel pricing is used)

Auston Matthews – $7500 / $7300- TOR vs DET

Matthews is a popular GPP play and cash idea on Sunday. That is because Detroit is simply a defensive sieve of late as they have allowed 17 goals in their last five contests. The center has seven goals in his last ten games on 37 shots. His impact on the power play has heated things up also. Matthews is also one of the most dangerous forward when it comes to scoring chances in the league.

Brayden Schenn — $5900 / $6000- PHI vs ANA

Schenn is a risky GPP play on Sunday as he could be matched up against the Ryan Kesler line. The Flyers will often try to move Schenn around and that does add some value. Anaheim is normally good at home but Philadelphia has been shut out a few times recently and that cannot be sitting well. The center also has six goals in his last nine games.

Alex Ovechkin — $8400 / $8800- WSH vs OTT

Ovechkin will be huge chalk on Sunday but is still a viable tournament play given the GPP structure for DraftKings and FanDuel. The money is more in the two game night slate. Ovechkin had two points against New Jersey on Saturday and made it too easy. That entire first line had a very good afternoon and their power play may be stackable against Ottawa.

Anthony Mantha — $5000 / $4900- DET vs TOR

Mantha will be a low owned tournament option on Sunday against Toronto because of his shot on outdoor ice. The winger had a long lull but is not on a four game point streak. He even had six shots on net in his last game. Toronto loves to give up chances and this could be an up and down game in stretches. That suits Mantha well and his goal potential is moderately high today.

John Carlson — $5600 / $5800- WSH vs OTT

Carlson has good point potential against an Ottawa squad that allows nearly three goals a game on the road. Ottawa gives up the most daily fantasy points in the league to defensemen. The blueliner has eight points in his last ten games. He may not block a ton of shots but he will attempt more shots than most. Ottawa likely will have Mike Condon in net and that will increase the chances of goal possibilities.

Nikita Zaitsev — $3900 / $4100- TOR vs DET

This is an excellent cash or GPP play on DraftKings. Consider that the defenseman is getting more than enough power play ice time. His price is too attractive to pass up on the day like this. He is averaging 24 minutes a contest in the previous three games. Most DFS owners may sleep on him because Zaitsev is in the 3:00 game. There will be chances for blocked shots, shots, and points.

Frederik Andersen — $7700 / $9100- TOR vs DET

Andersen is a heavy risk at GPP and cash on Sunday. The problem is this is an outdoors game with changeable ice conditions. Remember the sun factor early on and do not be surprised if the game is delayed a bit. Temperatures will be in the 30’s so brutal cold will not be an issue. The Toronto goalie is one of the hottest in the league over the last 15-20 games. He has a .948 save percentage and five wins in his last ten decisions. He is facing almost 33 shots per 60 which could mean a moderate or high save total.

If for whatever reason, you are a little queasy on Andersen then wait a little closer to confirmations. Tonight’s a night where one could even go Braden Holtby or John Gibson once more but will they get the W? That is quite a question. This is the type of slate where risk could be rewarded with the right mix of chalk plays. There will be tons of danger wherever you may go tonight.
