Now let’s get down to business with some insight from DraftCheat!
Tonight on FantasyDraft,
we have a $10,000 Home Run with a very reasonable $25 entry fee and a 12 entry limit so we will not see the field overrun by anyone one player with mighty resources. All 30 teams are in action which provides us with many potential paths to glory. Here are a few of my top plays that I am focusing on for tournaments.
Lance McCullers – HOU vs NYY – $17,100 – The Astros’ ace is inexplicably cheap on Fantasy Draft and we should take advantage of his $17,100 price tag. McCullers has been incredible this season, but has been especially strong recently. In June, he ranks 6th among all starters that have thrown a minimum of 200 pitches with a 33% whiff/swing rate, and ranks first by a good margin with a 73% groundball/ball in play rate. Whiffs and ground balls are a recipe for success against any team, even a potent Yankees offense. McCullers will also benefit from pitching at home where he has a higher K-rate this season and has historically been more effective. He should dominate the Bronx Bombers tonight.
Sonny Gray – OAK vs ATL – $16,200 – After struggling through much of last seasons with health issues, the A’s right-hander is back and healthy and showcasing some nasty pitches and the results to back it up. While the matchup is not perfect against a Braves’ team that generally puts the ball in play, Gray will benefit from pitching in his home park and has the stuff to shut down anyone. Gray may go a bit overlooked tonight but does come at a discounted price point from the other aces and allows you to get a few more high-end hitters into your lineup.
Logan Morrison – TBR at BAL – $9,300 – Morrison has crushed right-handed pitching this season and gets a nice park shift moving from Tropicana Field to Camden Yards where it is projected to very warm with favorable winds. The big thing to watch here is to see if Chris Tillman will be making the start. Tillman has been, in my estimation, the worst starting pitcher in MLB this season, but his child is due sometime today so it remains to be seen whether or not he will indeed start. If he does, Morrison is one of the top plays on the slate.
Jose Ramirez – CLE at DET – $9,900 – Really, the entire Indians’ team is in a great spot tonight against the extremely home run prone Anibal Sanchez and the Tigers’ bullpen, but Ramirez is my favorite of the bunch. Along with allowing a ton of hard contact and home runs, Anibal is also very easy to steal bases against, and Ramirez is best equipped to take advantage of both of Sanchez’ weaknesses. You’ll have to pay to get him in but the upside is immense here.
Corey Dickerson – TBR at BAL – $9,600 – Once again this is contingent on Chris Tillman starting, but if he does, Logan Morrison and Corey Dickerson are the two bats you want to target from the Rays (the other Rays are in play as well, but Morrison and Dickerson are in the best position). Dickerson and Morrison are two of the top hitters on the entire slate assuming Tillman does indeed take the hill.
Jay Bruce – NYY vs PHI – $8,800 – The Mets’ slugger has been a beast all season long and gets a fantastic matchup against the Phillies’ Ben Lively who is really struggling at the MLB level, though his ERA does not yet reflect it. Lively has a shockingly low 6.2% strikeout rate vs. left-handed hitters and is giving up a lot of hard contact as well. Bruce has a ton of power and if he’s going to make contact against Lively we have to expect great things for Bruce here.
Good luck out there tonight! ~ DraftCheat
