MLB Thoughts 10/10/16

I’m back for another edition of my MLB Thoughts and what I think we can see for the next couple games in these series. The home teams seem to have an edge so far in the series with the exception of the Dodgers and this trend should continue throughout the playoffs. As expected, the pitching has dominated so far and is always a big factor in the postseason. Let’s dive into today’s games.

Pitching has dominated these games and should do the same tonight. Gio Gonzalez has been volatile to say the least but seems to have a good matchup heading into this one. The Dodgers tend to struggle against lefties at times and we could see that today. If Gio shows command of his fastball and gets ahead in counts, we could see the old dominant Gio Gonzalez. On the other side Kenta Maeda will make his first postseason start of his career and should stay the course here. He’s held his own for the most part of this season and has the best bullpen in baseball behind him. In what should be a low scoring affair, I feel the Dodgers pitching could catapult them to a 2-1 series lead.

This will be the rescheduled game and the first one played in Boston. Boston looked atrocious in those first two games with changes coming out of nowhere. A couple things I noticed was the lineup switch they employed starting from Game 1 where Bogaerts was batting 6th. If you won the AL East and had one of the most potent offenses in baseball, there’s no need to switch up your lineup heading into the postseason. It also caught me by surprise that starters were using secondary signs starting from the 2nd inning due to suspicion of stealing signs. All this did was cause their starters to work much slower and not develop a rhythm, something Porcello and Price are known for. I hope Boston can get back to their regular ways and make this a series, if they don’t the series will end tonight. If you’re playing DFS, the bats you’d want to use will be from this game.

This will be the best pitching duel going on today. Bumgarner seems to be in another prime spot and should continue his legacy of being one of the best playoff pitchers of all time. The park, weather, and individual matchups are all in his favor. Look for LHP Madison Bumgarner to lead his team to victory in this win-or-go-home situation. On the other hand, Arrieta struggled to end the season and could be in trouble if he’s not on his game tonight. We have mentioned throughout the season that the Giants rarely strikeout and give right-handed pitchers a tough time. If they force long at-bats and make it a rough outing for Arrieta, the Giants should handle the Cubs in game three and force a game four. I like Giants hitters as contrarian plays on this short slate and make good one-offs if you’re stacking the Boston game.

Again, it’s always better to just be a fan at this time of the year and enjoy playoff baseball. If you’re getting some DFS action in, take the above thoughts and implement them in to your research. Bullpens are a huge factor in the playoffs and most of these teams have great ones. Stacks are also tough to rely on considering the situations and the amount of games going on. Either way, enjoy the games and I’ll catch you all soon. Till next time, party animals!
