Starting Nine 9/22/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Jeff Samardzija – The Shark has made his return to the Starting Nine. It isn’t the best matchup necessarily, but he’s in Dodgers Stadium which favors pitchers and against a Dodgers team which should start rolling out weaker lineups considering their magic number is down to one. On the season, Shark has really good numbers against both sides of the plate and is striking out lefties a little more than righties. He’s striking them out at 26% on the season while limiting them to a .329 wOBA. Even on the road here I think Samardzija is a very enticing option considering he is $7,600 on DraftKings and there are plenty of bats to pay up for. I love Samardzija in all game types.
Rick Porcello – LOOK WHO’S BACK!! Porcello takes the mound today against the Reds in Great American which isn’t too much of a downgrade from Fenway so I won’t factor that in too much. Porcello has the same strikeout splits against both sides of the plate so the number of lefties to righties doesn’t affect his projection too much. He’s still cheap across the industry and always comes with a floor of about 15 points which is great on this pitching slate. I also expect him to have run support behind him consider Sal Romano is going for the Reds and the Sox should get to him pretty easily. This is a tournament play only, but I do have a ton of interest in Porcello tonight.
Jon Gray – Jon Gray is the lucky one to face the Padres tonight. The Padres have been hitting a bit better lately but yesterday that didn’t happen. I think we can stream pitchers against them in this series and tonight’s turn belongs to Gray. He’s obviously the best pitcher in this staff and has some of the better strikeout stuff in the league. The Padres roll out a ton of righties and Gray has been striking them out at almost 30%. This one is a GPP play only due to the fact that the Padres are getting a bit healthier now and have extra lefties on the team now. If the confirmed lineup has more lefties than I expect, I’ll downgrade Gray, but if the righties are out in full force, I’ll roll out as much Gray as I can. It’s a boom or bust spot believe it or not, but one that could pay off huge in tournaments if we get the right matchup.
