Starting Nine 9/1/17

The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Mike Leake – What the… Yes, Mike Leake is on my radar today. He’s not the ace I usually name first in every article, but there isn’t an ace to pay up for today. Leake also has the honors of facing the Athletics at home in Safeco! He’s a Mariner now and gets one of the best matchups in baseball where his strikeout numbers should be better. He’s cheap and allows me to afford all the expensive bats I want, which are quite a bit on tonight’s slate. I’m using my old strategy of paying down at pitching today and paying up for hitters.

Sean Manaea – You’ve got to be thinking something is wrong with me today. Manaea hasn’t been in the Starting Nine since the beginning of the year. It’s the same game just the other side. His matchup isn’t as good as Leake’s, but it’s in a great pitcher’s park and he’s free on most sites. Sean Manaea is not a $5,600 pitcher on DraftKings even in this matchup against a team that doesn’t strikeout all that often. This one is a gut feeling. Manaea had two extra days’ rest before last start, as the team went over film and determined nothing is wrong mechanically and it’s just a product of him being overworked. The velocity looked a bit better last start and I expect it to be back again this time around. If all this plays out to be true, Manaea could make a run as the highest point-per-dollar pitcher.

Dinelson Lamet – If you haven’t noticed, the Dodgers are in a huge funk right now and losers of five straight to put them at a measly 50 games over .500. Robbie Ray just had a great game against them and I could see Dinelson Lamet doing the same. He will have to get through some of those lefty power bats, but it’s not anything to be worried about. I still expect Seager to be out and that’s the best bat in the lineup. If the lefties in the lineup are Granderson, Grandal, and Gonzalez, I think Lamet can have a great game and outperform his salary relatively easily. Against righties he’s been dominant, holding them to a .233 wOBA while striking them out 34% of the time. It’s safe to say guys like Taylor, Turner, Puig, and Forsythe should all have a rough time tonight.

Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I will confirm these plays and more on the Deeper Dive later today. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
