Starting Nine 8/4/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Madison Bumgarner – Madison Bumgarner returned to form last time out where he faced the Dodgers and went seven innings, picked up seven strikeouts, and didn’t allow a run. He was living in the strike zone throwing 74% first-pitch strikes and making hitters chase with his offspeed stuff. Bumgarner was able to throw 99 pitches in the outing which lets me know he’s fully stretched out and looks to be in perfect game shape again. Arizona is one of the best matchups in all of baseball for lefties as they showcase the worst wRC+ in the league and strikeout the 2nd most against southpaws. Bumgarner will be at home where he’s been great throughout his career and in the best pitcher’s park in the league. I love Bumgarner in all game types.
Jacob Faria – After a couple rough outings, Jacob Faria might not be on people’s radar. I love when Tampa is at home in the confines of Tropicana Field where pitchers thrive and usually perform well. Faria will face a team full of righties, a side he’s struck out 25% of the time this year. He has the offspeed stuff to keep hitters off balance and usually goes into the 7th inning. Guys like Villar, Thames, Santana, Aguilar, Brinson, and Broxton all strikeout close to 30% or more against right-handers. I love pairing Faria with any top-tier pitcher as it allows me to afford the bats I want while still creating upside.
Jacob deGrom – So many pitchers to choose from on tonight’s slate, but deGrom will still make my list. I love any game he’s at home as he’s been ELITE in Citi Field. Even with all the lefties he should face today, deGrom is one of my favorite tournament plays on the slate. He’s striking out lefties at just 24% but guys like Bellinger and Grandal strikeout close to 28% against righties. I wish he had more win equity here but there’s no denying the upside he possesses in this matchup. deGrom has 18 strikeouts in his last two starts combined and seems to be in a good spot to replicate that success. Mixing deGrom with guys like Faria, Rodriguez, and Bauer seems like a good bet tonight.
