Starting Nine 8/2/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Dallas Keuchel – In my opinion, Keuchel is the best arm going today. He got roughed up in his first start back, but that was against a ton of right-handed power away from Minute Maid where he’s been worse throughout his career. Tonight, Keuchel will return to Houston where his numbers have been ELITE and face a team in the Rays who strikeout just as much as anyone. Keuchel was able to throw 80 pitches last time out so it’s safe to assume he can go close to 100, making it a perfect spot to return to form. Most of the power hitters on this Tampa team come from the left side, and Keuchel has been one of baseball’s best starters against left-handed hitting. Lefties are hitting for a .122 wOBA and have gone down swinging 42% of the time. Nope, no typos. Right-handers aren’t doing much better, with a .270 wOBA and striking out 20% of the time. Keuchel is in a prime spot here and I love him for all game types.
Matt Moore – This is half a price play and half a good matchup. Matt Moore has been awful this season but somehow has put together a few good starts in a row. He’s gone at least six innings in each of his last three games and now faces an A’s team who’s sixth in strikeouts against lefties this season. Matt Moore isn’t the strikeout type but the A’s can help in that department. The projected lineup for Oakland has six righties which actually works in Moore’s favor who has performed well against right-handed hitting. Guys like Khris Davis, Marcus Semien, Yonder Alonso, Matt Chapman, and Bruce Maxwell all have extremely high K-rates against left-handed pitching. Moore, at $6,100 on DraftKings, can give you the salary relief you need to roster the top-tier bats.
Jake Arrieta – NEWS FLASH – The Cubs have won 14 out of their last 17 and are on a roll. The pitching has surprisingly been at the front of that streak. Arrieta has picked up three wins in his last five starts and number four could come tonight against the struggling Diamondbacks. Arizona looked awful yesterday against Lester and you can tell they’re searching for an answer when Adam Rosales is your third batter. Again, it’ll be a ton of righties in this Diamonbacks lineup which should struggle against Arrieta. Righties have hit Arrieta for just a .286 wOBA on the season while striking out 23%. Outside of Chase, the Diamondbacks are horrendous showcasing an OPS of .697 as opposed to .845 at home. Love Arrieta in tournaments today, especially if he’s going to be unowned like Lester was yesterday.
