Starting Nine 7/18/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Sean Newcomb – Nope, not Kershaw or Ray, it’s Sean Newcomb. This Cubs team has been awful this season to say the least. They have underperformed in every category this season and have disappointed many. I reference how good SunTrust Park has been to lefties this season, but when a lefty pitcher is on the mound it hasn’t been that good. Just ask Lester how he felt yesterday. Newcomb should get the worst version of this Cubs lineup which includes hitters like Baez, Almora, and maybe Catarini. If people haven’t noticed, Newcomb has developed some splits where he’s actually better against right-handed hitting. Dating back to the minors, Newcomb has gone 62.2 innings with 73 strikeouts against righties. If the Cubs surround Rizzo with a bunch of righties and sit Schwarber and Heyward, Newcomb could be in for one of the best point-per-dollar performances on the slate.
Blake Snell – Snell should take a page out of Odorizzi’s book and replicate his outing. The lefty will pitch in one of the better pitcher’s park in all of baseball and get a lineup that lacks upside to say the least. It also helps that the Angels are 24th in wRC+ against left-handed pitching this season which bodes extremely well for him. The all-star break has helped him heal just a bit and was able to go 98 pitches before the break. Snell is fully stretched out, in a great matchup, in a good pitcher’s park, and cheap across the industry. Love him in tournaments tonight as the upside is there.
Robbie Ray – We need someone in the top-tier and my guy will be Robbie Ray. Talk about DOMINANT. He’s turned into one of the premier strikeout pitchers in the league and that shouldn’t stop tonight. The floor he brings on a nightly basis due to his strikeout ability cannot be taken for granted. You’re getting him at a discount from Kershaw and he could rack up more strikeouts. The Reds haven’t looked good recently and could keep struggling to put up runs here. I like the Diamondbacks ability to give Ray run support and he should be in line for the win easily as -140 favorites. The top-tier is dicey making him a tournament play for me. All you need is a couple mistakes in Great American to ruin an outing so I won’t be going all in, but I love the upside he brings every night.
Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I will confirm these plays and more on the Deeper Dive later today. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
