Starting Nine 6/22/17

The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Jake Arrieta – This slate is atrocious. The fact that Arrieta might be my favorite pitcher on the slate, says a lot. The play here is hoping Arrieta takes advantage of all the righties in this Miami lineup. Lefties have shredded him this season but if he can navigate through Gordon and Yelich, he should do well. Arrieta is striking out righties and about 26% while holding to a .297 wOBA. If he can go six innings of one-run ball or less, he’ll pay off easily at his price tag.

Hyun-Jin Ryu – Just when you think the picks can’t get any worse! I’ve rostered Arrieta once and haven’t rostered Ryu yet. Tonight has the makings of a complete disaster. The Mets have been bad against lefties, and we just saw Rich Hill do well in his five innings yesterday. If Ryu can give me five innings of decent baseball, I’ll take it. If none of my pitchers finish in the negative, I’ll be happy. It also helps that Ryu has been better against righties this season as well. If the Mets load up on righties, we could see a heavy dose of Ryu’s best pitch, his changeup. I don’t expect him to have too much ownership, so he’s perfect for all game types.

It’s hard to recommend anyone else outside of these two. Matz would be the other guy I consider, but he’s not allowed to throw his slider yet which is his preferred strikeout pitch . The Mets coaches have come out and said they aren’t letting him throw it, his arm just isn’t ready for that type of strain after returning from injury. Because of that, it’s hard to project Matz accurately and for now I’m staying away.
