Starting Nine 6/2/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Clayton Kershaw – This could have been a tough decision if Strasburg wasn’t priced near Kershaw. Regardless of how he’s done this year, Kershaw is still the league’s best pitcher and should be considered every slate. He’ll face a Brewers team that continues to strikeout at a nice clip, especially against lefties. As a team, they strikeout the third-most against lefties and today face perhaps the best lefty in the game. This is going to sound weird, but having the platoon advantage against Sogard, Thames, and Shaw, is the best possible scenario for any pitcher going against the Brewers. Sogard is playing much better than Villar and if he gets the start, Kershaw could neutralize him to start the game. That’s something pitchers haven’t been able to do lately. Kershaw is the clear number one in all game types tonight.
German Marquez – The Rockies starting pitching has caught the world by storm this season. When Jon Gray went down, many thought it would be another last place finish for the Rockies. Since that injury, the Rockies starting pitching has been top 10 in the league and they’re currently tied for 1st in the NL West. German Marquez has been a huge part of that, and tonight he’ll get one of the best matchups in all of baseball. The Padres are ranked 27th in wOBA and wRC+ against right-handed pitching while striking out the second-most in baseball. Lefties have not been a problem for Marquez, who’s striking them out at about a 22% clip and holding them to a .317 wOBA this season. Guys like Schimpf, Solarte, and Spangenberg, shouldn’t cause any trouble for him tonight. I love the park, the pitcher in the lineup, and the high-probability to pay off this price tag.
Stephen Strasburg – With no games in Coors or Chase, my third option will be another top-tier pitcher. This one is for the Kershaw faders who want another top option. If Strasburg was around $10k instead of $12k on DraftKings, he would be my number one option on the night. This Athletics team is striking out at a ridiculous rate lately, and just got dominated by Indians pitching. Davis, Plouffe, Rosales, and Canha all strikeout over 30% of the time against right-handed pitching. Not to mention, there are a couple other who are approaching the 30% mark as well. It’s no secret that the Athletics are becoming a team to target against as Strasburg should take advantage. He should have significantly less ownership than Kershaw, but just as much upside in this matchup.
