Starting Nine 5/6/17

The data displayed will be a combination of 2016 and the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Clayton Kershaw – I will write him up every time he’s on the mound. If I recommended him against the Giants, which is a terrible matchup, I’ll recommend him against the Padres. No need to dig in to numbers. The Padres are atrocious and got dominated by Maeda. Kershaw should cruise easily through this matchup and reach 30+ fantasy points. He’s suitable for all game types.

Gerrit Cole – This game has some weather issues, but if we get the okay to play pitchers in this one, I’m rolling out Cole. We still don’t have word if Braun will be back in the lineup but that won’t matter much to me. The strikeout numbers have been there throughout the season and now Cole gets to face the Brewers which strikeout just as much as any team in baseball. Cole’s only weakness is power to left-handed hitters, but there’s only three in the projected Brewers lineup. PNC Park will also help in the power department meaning Cole could go deep in this one. Milwaukee has cooled off considerably since their hot start so Cole is facing them at the right time. We should get the strikeout-heavy lineup from the Brewers tonight which also includes a pitcher. I love Cole as a high-upside SP2 tonight.

Vincent Velasquez – I haven’t rostered him this season yet even though he is the perfect GPP pitcher. He’s a high-strikeout guy who racks them up in bunches but struggles to go deep into games. Because of this, I rarely roster him, especially since he lives around the $9k+ range on DraftKings. I mentioned in previous shows that I would love to roster him if he was $8k on DraftKings and now he finally is. I know it’s a tough matchup against Washington but I don’t mind the matchup considering he had 10 strikeouts against them in his first start. The field has seen him struggle to start the season, but without Bryce Harper, the Nationals will have a watered-down lineup which should work in Velasquez’s favor. I’ll gladly take a sub-15% owned Velasquez on a large slate like this one.

Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
