Starting Nine 5/30/17
The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Jeff Samardzija – This seems like the year for Jeff Samardzija who is posting top-tier numbers right now. What’s been impressive are his strikeout numbers, which are outstanding this year. He’s striking out both sides of the plate at about 28%, as opposed to hovering around 20% like he was last year. We saw Matt Moore pitch a pretty good game against this Nationals team and Samardzija could do the same. It’s worth noting that Bryce Harper could be suspended prior to the game, which would give the Shark a nice bump heading into this one. I love the park, where he’s just allowed to homeruns this season. At $8,600 on DraftKings, Samardzija is one of the safest plays on the board.
Chris Sale – For the first time this season, I have someone ranked ahead of Chris Sale. Not only are we paying a hefty price tag for the stud left-hander, but he also has a sneakily tough matchup. I mentioned with David Price yesterday, this White Sox team is amongst the league’s best against lefties. They strikeout second-least to left-handers and that downgrades Sale just a bit. I have him second on the list based off pure talent and the strikeout ability he has. Today he seems like a better cash play due to his safe floor, I just don’t know if he has enough upside to pay off a $13,400 price tag. I have Sale in just a third of my lineups and that could dwindle as the day goes on. The real reason why I have Sale on this list with all the negative points? Revenge game!
Justin Verlander – Verlander has struggled for his standards this season. I’ve targeted the Royals as much as I can this season and with tons of success. They’re starting to hit a bit more, but if it wasn’t for a couple timely errors in yesterday’s ball game, Norris could’ve had a great outing. Verlander will have a great matchup today and shouldn’t garner any ownership. The Tigers are favorites as well; they’ll face a spot-starter in Eric Skoglund who’s making his MLB debut. If Verlander gets his run support, he should provide a solid floor and have enough upside with his strikeouts for tournaments.
