Starting Nine 5/24/17

The data displayed will be from the start of this 2017 season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Chris Sale – There’s not much to say about the best pitcher in baseball this year. Regardless of matchup he’ll always have the highest upside on the slate and should always be in consideration. He’ll face a Texas team which strikes out a ton against lefties, especially guys like DeShields, Napoli, Chirinos, and Rua just to name a few. If you believe in narrative street, he’s aiming to be the all-time leader in consecutive games with double-digit strikeouts. He’s a must for cash games and today has the upside you need in tournaments. Chris Sale is the clear number one.

Charlie Morton – A frequent visitor to the Starting Nine, Charlie Morton is my second favorite pitcher on the slate. He’ll get the righty-heavy Detroit lineup which is strikeout prone as we saw yesterday. Morton has struggled this year against right-handed hitters but the strikeout numbers continue to look healthy. Righties are getting to him for a .375 wOBA this season but he’s striking them out at 23%. With how tight pricing has gotten lately, $8,600 for Morton is not expensive for a guy who can strikeout six or seven tonight. I love him as a tournament option tonight with upside.

Tyler Chatwood – Chatwood is going to be my cheapie of the night. The Phillies are slumping hard. With the performance I saw yesterday from Marquez, it lets me believe Chatwood could do the same today. The best hitters on this Phillies team are right-handed and Chatwood has been great against righties this season. He’s not a huge strikeout guy, but being a cheap tournament option, he doesn’t need to. I like him to go deep into this game and provide one of the better point-per-dollar outings tonight. He’s a tournament option only that lets you fit in some of the top bats tonight.
