Starting Nine – 5/1/17
The data displayed will continue to be from the 2016 season until we get a big enough sample size this season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.
Clayton Kershaw – Kershaw at home is one of the sure things in all of sports. He could have a tough matchup like he does tonight, cost $14,000 and still be the top play of the night. The best pitcher in baseball will be in most my lineups considering there aren’t any games in Coors or Chase Field. I’ll take the guaranteed point with the upside of a complete game shutout in this one and move along with my lineups. He should be 100% owned in cash games and still makes a great tournament play. Don’t fade him.
Wei-Yin Chen – Another cheap pitcher against the Rays. Chen will be at home in a park which favors pitchers, and against one of the worst hitting teams. The strikeouts have continued to stay consistent for this Tampa team and that should continue tonight. Chen doesn’t rack up the strikeouts, but similar to Stroman, the Tampa lineup will gift you strikeouts and that’s what we’re looking for. It also helps that he gets to face a pitcher in the lineup. If I include the pitcher, there are five multi-strikeout candidates. Chen makes a perfect SP2 option to pair with Kershaw.
Amir Garrett – One bad outing and he’s back to $5.5k on DraftKings. This is just a price play, but again, one that makes a ton of sense. If you want to fit Kershaw with some of the expensive bats, you’ll need to sacrifice somewhere and Amir Garrett saves you salary. I don’t like the matchup nor the park, but we’ve seen Garrett succeed in Great American Ball Park. This is strictly to create upside in your lineups while having Kershaw in your lineup. Garrett is not cash viable in my opinion, and makes a risky tournament play.
Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I will confirm these plays and more on the Deeper Dive later today. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
