Starting Nine – 4/29/17

The data displayed will continue to be from the 2016 season until we get a big enough sample size this season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Joe Musgrove – The same reason as Morton yesterday. These Oakland bats are average at best and come with strikeouts as well. If you can work through Khris Davis, who strikes out a ton as well, it can be smooth sailing for Musgrove tonight. At times, he shows electric stuff and is a typical boom or bust pitcher in DFS. It also helps that he’s $7,400 on DraftKings which give him room for error. I like him as one of the best point-per-dollar plays on the slate even though he can be risky.

Brandon McCarthy – We saw what Maeda just did to this team. The Phillies are on a cross-country trip and playing in one of the worst hitters-park in the league. Maeda dominated these guys yesterday and McCarthy has similar stuff. The strikeouts will continue to be there, especially against the righties which McCarthy dominates. He’s limited right-handed hitters to a .274 wOBA dating back to last year, so he should neutralize these right-handed power bats. Add a pitcher to the lineup and McCarthy becomes one of the better point-per-dollar plays on the slate.

Zack Greinke – If this was a bigger slate I wouldn’t have much interest in Greinke who’s pitching in Chase Field against a team who showcases power. With the limited options at pitcher, I don’t mind paying up for Greinke who does have upside. If he continues to pitch like he has lately, he can take advantage of the strikeout-prone Rockies. Robby Ray had success in the strikeout department yesterday, and Greinke should as well. Even with the park downgrade, he still has a solid floor and won’t kill you.

Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
