Starting Nine – 4/26/17

The data displayed will continue to be from the 2016 season until we get a big enough sample size this season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Cole Hamels – Lefties against the Twins have been a real thing for the last year. Today we get one of the better lefties in the league who has been forgot about due to the fact he plays in one of the worst parks. Hamels is still a top tier pitcher and gets a great matchup today. If you see in the chart below, there are three hitters in the Twins’ projected lineup that hit for an above-average wOBA against lefties. It also helps that Hamels strikes out right-handed hitters a better rate than he does left-handers. The upside is there for Hamels today as he should be in line for the win tonight as well. Cole Hamels, as of right now, is the guy I want to pay up for.

Matt Shoemaker – Shoemaker had a tough start to the season as he struggled his first three starts. Last outing against the Astros he looked much better and reminded us why we fell in love with him last season. Tonight, he gets a left-handed heavy team in the Athletics who have been struggling to produce lately. Shoemaker, because of his above-average off-speed stuff, has developed some reverse splits where he’s much better against lefties. Oakland has the perfect team to roll out five lefties against him and that would be the wrong move. If the lineup comes out as expected, look for Shoemaker to dominate once again and turn in a quality start at a minimum.

Dylan Bundy – This one won’t be a secret. Dylan Bundy has quickly become a fan favorite in DFS over the last year and today hosts the Tampa Bay Rays. It’s no secret that the Rays strikeout at a ridiculous rate. Wade Miley had a great outing yesterday and Bundy should follow the same footsteps. The strikeout numbers are alarming vs. both left-handed and right-handed pitchers, so Bundy shouldn’t have a tough time replicating Miley’s success. At a $7.8k price tag on DraftKings, Bundy is one of the better point-per-dollar plays on the slate.

Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I will confirm these plays and more on the Deeper Dive later today. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
