Starting Nine 4/15/17

The data displayed will continue to be from the 2016 season until we get a big enough sample size this season. I like displaying this information on one page so I can see which pitchers have the most strikeout opportunities on a given night. We know strikeouts are huge in MLB DFS and looking at this information as lineups come out help me pinpoint which pitchers have the best matchups. With this info in front of us, here are the pitchers I think are in the best spots tonight.

Kenta Maeda – Kershaw just dominated this team and although Maeda isn’t up to Kershaw’s standards, he can have a great outing here. Arizona does strikeout quite a bit to right-handed pitchers while Maeda makes a living off right-handed hitters. It’s a perfect combination to catapult Maeda into the top-tier on tonight’s short slate. If Roberts lets him go deep into this game, we could see one of Maeda’s better games to start the season.

James Paxton – Every sharp MLB player has been vocal about being high on Paxton this season. His stuff is great and could be on display here against a Texas team that showcases power from the left side. If Texas tries to fit in a couple of right-handed hitters into the lineup, Paxton could benefit from that as he strikes out righties at a higher rate (25%). The lineup will make it or break it for me when it comes to Paxton, but just on raw talent should be the second-best pitcher on the slate.

R.A. Dickey – If I’m going to pay up for the guys I mentioned above, I need a cheapie who is going to give me salary relief. There is no data behind this play, just a punt play that will help me load up on my bats. I’m hoping for San Diego to have a rough day at the plate, which happens more times than not, and for Dickey to pay off his salary. I also love that this will be the first time that most of these Padres will face Dickey and his knuckle. If he’s on, this could be a great game for Dickey who has the upper hand.

Feel free to message me on Twitter (@MLora) with any questions regarding todays slate. I’ll also be in the premium slack chat answering questions leading up to lock. Till next time, party animals!
