MLB Pitching Prognostication 9/12/16
All prices are DraftKings unless otherwise stated
After a weekend full of Football, we’re back on the MLB grind with a 15-game slate. At first glance, pitching seems a little tough again, considering we have a bunch of average pitchers on the mound. Either way, I’ll try to lay out some GPP plays to help you succeed in tournaments and hopefully take down a big payday. Let’s get to it!
Keyvius Sampson – CIN vs. MIL – $4,000
Our daily routine is to target the Brewers, so here we are again. We got Wainwright correct last time, as he dominated the Brewers and got the Cardinals back in the win column. Today at minimum salary, RHP Keyvius Sampson could be in for a decent game. The only worry here is his pitch count since he’s been working out of the bullpen for his last few outings. Either way, it’s a matchup with tons of upside as the Brewers strike out a ton and could lead to Sampson paying off his salary. If I knew Sampson could pitch close to 100 pitches, I’d be comfortable rolling him out.
Jeremy Hellickson – PHI vs. PIT – $6,800
Pitching is extremely tough today, making RHP Jeremy Hellickson a tournament option for me. The Pirates have only two left-handed bats in the lineup today, and righties are hitting for a .290 wOBA on the season against Hellickson. With the addition of the pitcher at the bottom of the lineup, there’s three batters who can strikeout multiple times in the lineup as well. A mid-tier price, the upside is there for him to outperform his salary and get you a leg up in tournaments. Make sure the Pirates roll out the expected lineup before making this decision.
Francisco Liriano – TOR vs. TB – $8,300
This list keeps getting uglier as I continue writing. Yes, Liriano isn’t a third of what he once was, but he faces the Rays tonight on a slate where pitching is atrocious. Even though he’s quite expensive for his skillset, the matchup is just too good to pass up. The Rays are strikeout queens and Liriano should rack them up with ease tonight. The Rays have a projected strikeout rate of 26% for tonight’s game, the second highest on the slate. Even if Liriano runs into some trouble, the strikeouts should be there and he could be in line for the win. In tournaments, it’s worth a shot.
Gerrit Cole – PIT at PHI – $7,700
If Gerrit Cole isn’t on a pitch count he should make a solid play tonight in GPPs. The Phillies are in the bottom tier of every offensive category and strikeout at a nice rate. I always mention how one hitter in the lineup is above-average, and the majority have strikeout rates above 20%. We know Cole has struggled to pick up strikeouts at times, but the Phillies will help in that department. At $7,700, he has a shot at exceeding his price tag and letting you afford the big bats in play tonight. I’ll try to get word on a pitch count before ‘The Deeper Dive’ airs later today.
I usually avoid most of these names as they’re not the most talented pitchers. With that being said, the pitching on tonight’s slate is mediocre and we have to make decisions. Paying up for bats seems like the obvious move today and some of these guys should help get that done. Although these aren’t the names you want to roster, these are the guys I’ll be targeting in GPPs while stacking up the top teams. I’ll let you in on more info later today so make sure to tune in. Till next time, party animals!
