This ongoing series will cover NFL “Best Ball” draft formats, particularly for DRAFT / PlayDraft.com
DRAFT aka PlayDraft.com is dipping their toe in the world of NFL Best Ball draft leagues. This is an exciting development for gamers who are not eligible to participate in some of the other traditional NFL Best Ball contests because those companies have not chosen to pay the gaming fees created by several states recently enacted legislative policies.
What is DRAFT aka PlayDraft.com? – They are a site that is taking a different approach to daily fantasy sports and focusing on live drafts leagues instead of the traditional salary cap format.
How does that work? – In general leagues are listed in the lobby and eligible gamers are able to join them like any other site. The big difference is that once filled, an actual draft will commence with each gamer getting a turn to make a selection from the remaining player pool. Drafts are generally in the “snake” format meaning they reverse course and the end of each round.
What does “Best Ball” mean? – With best ball, your top scoring players are automatically chosen each week to fill out your roster requirements (1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 FLEX aka one more RB/WR/TE). There is no longer any risk of leaving your highest scoring receiver on the bench when he has a three touchdown week and you don’t have to worry about making waiver moves or getting annoying trade offers from your league mates every week.

Okay, I have signed up and am ready to start! – Excellent, this will be the first in a series of primers to help you prepare for Best Ball on DRAFT!
Draft Formats: there are two main types of draft formats, “fast” and “slow” with both being similar to their names. “Fast” drafts begin as soon as the league is filled and then each gamer has 30 seconds to make their selection when they are on the clock. “Slow” drafts are for those who may have other demands such as work and family throughout the day, so each gamer has eight hours to make their selection when they are on the clock.
Roster Formats: With “best ball” your top scoring players are chosen for you automatically each week among your active players to best fill out the roster requirements of 1 QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, 1 TE and 1 FLEX aka one more RB/WR/TE. Depending on your strategy (i.e. waiting on some positions while loading up on others), the makeup of your league (8-10-12 members of varying skill level from button mashing to having already drafted 100 teams) the general makeup for your 18 roster spots will be QBs 2-3, RBs 4-6, WRs 6-8 and TEs 2-4 unless of course you are attempting to invent a revolutionary drafting strategy.
Bye Weeks and Injuries: The DRAFT platform will let you know what the bye weeks are for each of the players on your team or still in the player pool, which is nice. Injuries however, well that is a different story. If you only draft two quarterbacks and one gets injured and the other is on a bye week, then unfortunately you will be receiving a score of ZERO from that position for the week. Now, we cannot cover every contingency otherwise we would have a pretty average team and average is not likely to get us into the payouts (which vary based on league size).
Scoring: The KEY THING TO REMEMBER is that DRAFT Best Ball is a “half-point PPR scoring system” which means your players receive 0.5 fantasy points for each reception. This means that running backs that are more rushing focused will not be as “devalued” as much as in full-point PPR leagues and that wide receivers, while generally capable of putting up the highest scores each week, will not be quite as “dominating” as they are in formats where they get more points per reception.
The rest is pretty straight forward with rushing, receiving and return touchdowns worth 6 points, rushing and receiving yards worth 0.1 points, fumbles lost are negative 2 points and for the passing stats it is 4 points per touchdown, 0.04 points per yard (which is 4 points per 100 yards) and negative one for each interception thrown.
